B. Where are Jason and Brad Garcia? Circle all the correct answers.
Focus students’ attention on Language Zoom In. Ask them what other abbreviations they
know in English. Explain that abbreviations are usually spelled out when spoken,
i.e. U-C-L-A. Suggest that a few be written on the board for students to say in English to
teach the word abbreviation. Then continue with an explanation of Language Zoom In.
Have students check their answers with a partner. Call on selected students to give the
answers.
Jason: Hi. My name is Jason Garcia, and this is my brother, Brad.

Grammar
Making introductions
Explain to students that this is a review. Have them tell you without looking at the book
how many forms of “be” there are. Write them on the board as the students say them. Then,
have selected students make sentences with each one.
be动词的一般现在时有三种形式,即:am, is, are。
1. 如果主语是第一人称I(我)时,be动词用am。
如:I am a student. 我是一名学生。
I am 还可缩写成I'm。如: I'm David. 我是大卫。
2. 如果主语是you (你,你们), they (他们,她们,它们)或名词复数 (两个以上的人或物)时,be动词必须用are。
如:Are you twelve? Tom and Lily are good friends.
They are at school.
are与主语还可缩写。如: We are= We're, They are =They're, You are = You're。
而are与 not可缩写成aren't。
如:They aren't students.但是am与not不能缩写。
3. 如果主语是单数名词、不可数名词或单数第三人称代词(he, she, it)时,be动词用is。
如:My mother is a teacher. 我的妈妈是一名老师。
He is a student. 他是一名学生。
is也可与主语缩写,如: He is = He's, My mother is = My mother's等。但是This is不可缩写。而is与not可缩写成 isn't。
如:This isn't a book. 这不是一本书。
Vocabulary in Context
Talking about occupations
Have students look at the illustrations and tell them they are going to meet more people who
live at Hollywood Oaks Apartments and learn about their occupations. Ask students if they
remember what Jason, Brad, and Annie do.
On the board, write the occupations:
apartment manager, actor, student, writer, model, nurse, engineer, teacher, and doctor.
Have students look at the illustrations and tell which picture illustrates each occupation.
Check students’ understanding by asking students where a nurse, engineer, actor, etc.,
works.
Ask students to focus on the pronunciation of each occupation.
Now write sentences about three people you know. Say what each person is.
If possible, bring in pictures of different professions and the professions listed in the
Word Bank from magazines and newspapers to use to teach the words in the Word Bank.
Focus students’ attention on Language Zoom In and explain that we use a or an before an occupation. A is used before any word beginning with a consonant sound (not necessarily a written consonant). For example, university is written with a vowel but pronounced with a /j/ sound; therefore, we say a university. An is used before all words beginning with a vowel sound. Have students apply this rule by deciding which of the occupations (apartment manager, actor, student, writer, model, nurse, engineer, teacher, doctor) take a and which take an.
不定冠词的用法:
1.用于可数名词单数前,表示某一类人或事物。
This is a ruler.
He’s a student.
2.指人或事物,但不具体说明何人或何物。
There are seven days in a week.
We have three meals a day.
3.表示“一个”,但数的概念没有one强。
There’s a tree on the hill.
He has an interesting book.
4.指某类人或事物中的任何一个。
An elephant is bigger than a horse.
A car runs faster than a bike.
5.用于某些固定词组中。
a lot of\ a bit\have a rest\have a cold\a kind of\a piece of\have a good time
当我们使用an时,这个名词的读音必须是以元音音素开头——即它的音标的第一个音素是元音,而不是说它是以元音字母开头;它必须是个可数名词;它还必须是个单数名词。
a university 一所大学 an honest person一位诚实的人
an orange 一只桔子 an engineer 一位工程师
Listening in Context
A. Listen and number the conversations (1–3) as you hear them.
Have students look at the illustrations, and point to the people asking
“Is this Annie/Stacey/Brad, etc?” Ask students where they are and what’s happening.
Tell students they are going to listen to three conversations. They will need to decide who is
having each conversation and write the numbers 1, 2, or 3 in the circle next to the people in the picture. Tell them to focus on the information they need to identify who is having the
conversation (the names of the people).
Have students check their answers with a partner and play the recording again if necessary. Call on selected students to give the answers.
B. Listen again. Which occupations do you hear? Check (√) them.
Have students look at the list of occupations and ask them if they remember any of the
occupations of the people at the party.
Tell students they are going to listen to the recording again. This time all they need to do is
listen for the occupations that are mentioned and check them on the list.
Reading
Postcards to friends and family
Before you read
Have students look at the postcard and present the word postcard.
Ask them when we usually send postcards.
While you read
Jason and Brad Garcia are writing to their friends and family.
Read the postcards. Read the addresses. Match each postcard with the correct address.
Have students look at the three addresses on the right and ask whether they think the people
are friends or family. Ask students what Jason and Brad’s family name is.
After you read
Complete the postcards with a name.
Write“Dear” Jane, Robbie, or Mom and Dad.
Have students complete each postcard with the opening Dear and the name of the person
the postcard is addressed to.
Writing

Zhou Fang.
Responses:
Zhou Fang, Apartment 713,
Building 7, Xinkai Hutong, Xicheng
District, Beijing 100032, PR China
Practical Reading:
A. Read these postcards.
Before reading, ask your students to think about what it would be like to work in an
office or factory.
How well would they know their colleagues?
Would it be fun to receive a post card at work from a colleague who had gone on holiday?
How would they feel if they had to move away from their family and former workmates
to work in a different city?
How could they keep in touch?
Point out that people at work do not sign off with ‘love’.
They use “Best wishes” even if they know the person they are writing
to very well.
Focus attention on the addresses and how at work a postcard can be sent to an entire
department or even all the staff in a smaller company where most people will know each
other.
Reiterate that addresses in the West are written upside down to those in China.
Draw students’ attention to the fact that in America the zip code is written with letters indicating the
state followed by numbers, whilst in Britain the post code, as it is known, is written with
letters then numbers then more letters, with a gap in the middle. Other countries have
different conventions.
B. Write T (true) or F (false) against these statements.
Ensure students understand the questions.
Students complete the exercise individually and then compare answers with their partner.
Check answers by asking selected students and/or writing the answers on the board.
1. Jane says the sea is clean.
2. Jane is missing her colleagues.
3. Brad is missing his Mum and Dad.
4. Brad’s new manager is a woman.
5. Tom does not like the food in Shanghai
6. Tom lives in an apartment near the office.
7. Brad’s parents live in the UK.
8. Henderson Electronics is in London.
9. Mr and Mrs Smith live on East 3rd St.
10.The ZIP code of Black and Sons is 12402
