Jumanji(勇敢者的游戏)is a story for children about a very strange game—a game that becomes far too real and frightening for the players. It was a story by Chris Van Allsburg, which was later filmed in 1996, starring the famous American actor Robin Williams.
The story begins in 1869 in New Hampshire, America. Two young brothers bury a box under some trees. A hundred years later, in 1969, a boy, Alan Panish, finds the box and takes it home. He is unhappy that his father may want to send him to a boarding school. Alan’s friend, Sarah, arrives, and they open the box. Inside is a board game. At the start of the game, some words appear: “Do you want to leave the world behind and go back to the past? Then this is the game for you.” Suddenly Alan finds that he is disappearing into the game.
The story has a deep meaning. Through his adventures Alan learns something important—if you face your fears, your problems will go away. Alan turns to face Van Pelt, the hunter who is trying to kill him. In doing so, he completes the game and returns to reality. Then he finds that his father is not going to send him to a boarding school after all.
In Jumanji, time is flexible. The film director Stephen Spielberg’s “Back to the Future” films play with time in the same way. Top scientists even tell us now that time travel is theoretically possible!
21. From the story we learn that Alan is a boy who ________.
A. dislikes his study at school B. is afraid of his serious father
C. was born a hundred years ago D. goes back to the past in the game
22. Through the game Alan has realized that whenever he has difficulties he should _______.
A. escape into the past B. face them bravely
C. ask for his father’s advice D. read the words on the box
23. What does the author mean when he says time is flexible?
A. One can travel in time. B. Science can change the limit of time.
C. Time travel is impossible in space. D. Time is a common topic in film-making.

All around the world, an increasing number of people are spending their time taking part in online volunteering projects. What encourages them to help strangers without expectation of money or even thanks?
Radha Taralekar helped teach Imelda how to protect herself from HIV, though the two have never met, and neither knows the other’s name. Taralekar received no payment for the job. For Taralekar, the project gave her the chance to use her professional experience. “I want to serve people with my medical knowledge,” she said. For some, the inspiration to volunteer online was far more personal. After losing his wife to cancer, Tony Selman spent many hours online helping Cancer Research to collect information on the illness. “Seeing how painful she was when my wife was dying, I decided to help scientists find a way to treat cancer,” he said.
Interests and hobbies are also one of the reasons. Sam Luk joined other online volunteers to try to help the police solve murder cases. The police posted them online, calling for volunteers to help them to make sense of the messages. “I am interested in this and I love Sherlock Holmes,” said Luk.
For writer Clay Shirky, some large online volunteering projects help millions of people, giving him a sense of achievement. He helps write Wikipedia, the world’s biggest encyclopedia (百科全书), which is written by people willing to use their professional knowledge.
24. We can know that Radha Taralekar may be a ____.
A. teacher B. doctor C. writer D. policewoman

26. Sam Luk volunteered to help the police because of ____.

A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.

When a friend is sad about a tragedy (悲剧), it’s hard to know how to comfort (安慰) him/ her. But the worst thing you can do is say nothing. It could mean that you don’t care. Don’t say: “Gee! It was only a cat!” or “My roommate doesn’t like her dog and she is getting rid of her dog. Do you want it?” Do say: “I’m sorry, she was such a great cat. How long did you have it?”

After I made it to the city center, I started to feel it might be easy for a foreigner to deal with the great size of Beijing. With growing confidence, I decided to take the subway to the hotel, not realizing that the network didn’t go that far. Impressed with the cleanliness of the station, I bought a ticket and boarded the first train that came along.
After a few minutes I asked in English of course a young man seated next to me where I should get off closest to the Friendship Hotel. Wearing a smart business suit and tie, he would surely speak English, wouldn’t he? Unfortunately, he couldn’t understand me but seemed very friendly. I showed him the room card with all the information of the Friendship Hotel in Chinese characters(汉字). He looked at it, and then his eyes moved quickly to the carriage (车厢) subway map. Next, he raised three fingers of his right hand.
In Australia, raising fingers at someone is not usually nice, but this man wasn’t smiling. At the next station he showed me two fingers. Now in Australia, that’s really rude, but I got the message. When we stopped at the third station, he didn’t just point to the door, but got up, took me out of the train, and led me to the top of the stairs, and out onto the street. Then he stopped a taxi and told the driver where to take me.
All this came from a man who couldn’t speak my language, and I couldn’t speak his. I was now speechless, especially when he refused my offer of money. I felt a little embarrassed having even thought he would accept a tip.
This experience made it clear I had to learn some Chinese quickly or my adventures might start turning into bad luck.

C.answered the author directly D.pointed at the subway map

A.prove the importance of being careful
