Ryan Hreljac is a boy living in Canada. Without his help, hundreds of wells that now provide fresh water for people in Africa, Central America and India might never have been built. Ryan is what you might call a water ambassador(大使). He traveled the world to tell people how they can help solve a big problem: the lack of safe drinking water in many developing countries.
Ryan's efforts didn’t begin in a far-off place, but right at home in Kemptville Ontario.
When he was 6 years old, Ryan learned from his teacher that children in Africa often must walk miles each day to find water. Some even die from drinking bad water, his teacher said.
So Ryan decided to act. He did chores for his parents and neighbors. He spoke to schools, churches, and clubs about his goal. The word spread. After several months of hard work, Ryan had raised $2,000, enough to dig one well.
An organization called Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief(CPAR) chose a site for the well in the village of Agweo. in Uganda. Two years later, CPAR arranged for Ryan to visit Uganda for the opening ceremony of the well. Ryan met a new friend named Jimmy. Then they formed a close friendship. He often traveled with Ryan to explain how water changed his life.
After the first well, “the ripple (涟漪) effect took over, ” Ryan says, “and one goal led to another. ” With adult help, he founded Ryan's Well Foundation to educate people about the importance of water. Now the foundation has raised more than $S 1. 5 million and built 255 wells that serve more than 427, 000 people in 12 countries. Ryan has received many awards but he isn't bragging (吹牛). “The most impressive people I've met are the other kids who want to help too, ” he says. “I'm just a typical kid. I had a small dream, and I stayed with it. Everybody can do something.”

To develop one’s taste in English, the most effective way is to read English books extensively.Yet one may be at a loss to choose the appropriate books, especially as a beginner. As a native Spanish, I would like to share some of my experience.
My first English novel was Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, recommended by many English teachers and professors as an ideal book for English learners. But my experience was somewhat disastrous. I had great difficulty in understanding the novel, let alone enjoying it. It’s not the vocabulary that troubled me, but rather the way Austen constructs sentences, and her way of thinking, which seemed too remote to me at that time. My fading enthusiasm was much recovered after reading Hemingway’s novel A Farewell to Arms. No long and complicated sentences. And I particularly liked his brief and straightforward(简洁的) style. So my first suggestion is, as a beginner, you’d better choose contemporary novels instead of classical ones.
However, if you restrict yourself to novels you will miss a lot of treasures. English essays can at once inform you, entertain you, and improve your taste in English. The best example is Bertrand Russell’s work. Its language is plain, yet you cannot help feeling the elegance and the peculiar sense of humor. His simple language enables his philosophy (哲学) within the reach of ordinary people. Here comes my second suggestion—essays are indispensable.
Never follow others’ recommendations and opinions blindly, however famous or influential(有很大影响的) the person might be.We should be open to various ideas, but always think and determine for ourselves. As a saying goes, one man’s meat is another man’s poison. With that in mind, we are bound to find out our favorite writers through reading and develop our fine taste in English.
28.What made the first English novel that the author read hard to understand?
A.Complicated conversations.
B.The old-fashioned vocabulary.
C.Not knowing the social background.
D.Sentence construction and thinking pattern.
29.Which can best replace the underlined word “indispensable”?
A.Relevant. B.Challenging.
C. Necessary. D.Inspirational.
30.What advice does the author give in the last paragraph?
A. Compare books before buying.
B. Read books that are instructive.
C. Choose books that challenge us most.
D. Don’t be affected by others’ choices.
31.What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?
A.Tell beginners how to choose English books.
B.Recommend first class books to English learners.
C.Encourage people to read more English books.
D.Give comments on literature works.

Everybody hates rats. But in the earthquake capitals of the world — Japan, Los Angeles, Turkey — rats will soon be man’s new best friends.
What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue dogs. Why? Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can’t get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives:the rat.
How does it work? First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat’s brain gives a signal. This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When the rat’s brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has smelled that person.
Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. Christian Linster at Cornell University,New York, says,“Robots’ noses don’t work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that.” Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don’t need electricity!
The “rat project” is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Corps in Scotland says, “It would be fantastic. A rat could get into spaces we couldn’t get to,and a rat would get out if it wasn’t safe.” Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building (but only after an earthquake, of course).
32. In the world earthquake capitals, rats will become popular because they can .
A. get into small spaces
B. take the place of man’s rescue jobs
C. find food for survivors trapped in buildings
D. find the position of survivors trapped in buildings
33. From the third paragraph we know rescuers can judge a person is alive by .
A. the noise made by the rat
B. the rat’s unusual behaviour
C. the signal sent by the radio on the rat
D. the smell given off by the person trapped
34. After reading the passage we know that now .
A. people still use dogs and robots in rescue work
B. the “rat project” has been completed already
C. rats have replaced dogs in searching for people
D. people are happy to see a rat in a building
35. The main idea of the passage is about_______in an earthquake.
