According to scientists, the thought isn’t as unbelievable as it seems. A study found going without sleep for just one night causes changes in the brain similar to those that happen after a blow to the head. The researchers said the healthy young men examined in the study showed a sudden rise in the same chemicals which indicate(表明) brain damage. Professor Christian Benedict, of Uppsala University, Sweden, explained that the chemicals NSE and S-100B are biomarkers(生物指标) for brain damage, such as concussion(脑震荡). He said, “What we found was their levels in the blood rose in the group that went without sleep for a night. This was not to the degree that would happen after a head injury, for example, but it was still worth paying attention to. During sleep, the brain cleans itself of poisonous substances.” He said the findings support the previous(以前的) research showing how the brain makes use of sleep to clean itself. Professor Benedict also said his study could support previous studies which linked a lack of sleep with increased risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. The rise of the chemicals in the blood after sleep loss may suggest not getting enough sleep leads to a loss of brain tissue, he explained. Professor Benedict, whose study is published in the journal Sleep, added, “In conclusion, the findings of our trial indicate a good night’s sleep may be very important for keeping brain health.” A third of the UK population suffer from sleep-related problems, while the average person now sleeps for only seven hours a night, compared with almost nine a few decades ago. Many scientists believe irregular sleeping patterns lead to illnesses ranging from aches and pains to heart disease, while less than eight hours’ sleep a night can lower the IQ the next day. 1、If you don’t sleep for a night, what will happen? A.There will be a rise in the chemicals NSE and S-100B B.The chemicals NSE and S-100B will drop to a lower level C.Some of the chemicals NSE and S-100B will change into other matters D.The chemicals NSE and S-100B will be less able to get rid of poisonous matters 2、What is the previous study mainly about according to the passage? A.The way to avoid brain damage B.The ways to improve the quality of sleep C.The ways that have effect on people’s sleep D.The way the brain uses sleep to clean itself 3、We can we infer from the last paragraph that . A.man’s intelligence is affected by sleep in a way B.people who need more sleep have a higher IQ C.one fourth of the UK population have sleep-related problems D.modern people need less sleep than those a few decades ago 4、What’s is the theme of the passage? A.Eight hours’ sleep is important B.How human brains work during sleep C.Sleep loss is close to a blow to the head D.Regular sleeping patterns improve health 22.(8分)The “swim-with-dolphins” tourist industry is becoming more popular every year with the increase of people’s income. After all, it can cost a large amount of money to have this kind of holiday experience. So tour operators try to place eager swimmers as near as possible to the dolphins by trying to predict where the dolphins will be. Research has shown that while dolphins can move away if they do not want to interact (交流) with human swimmers, they do not like it at all if the swimmers slip into the water directly on top of them or if humans are in their path of travel. However, if swimmers enter the water to one side of them, the dolphins do not avoid the swimmers to the same extent. In all cases, the dolphins seem to have become more sensitive to the presence of the swimmers. For dolphins, swimming among or with humans is not necessarily a high priority. This research has shown that only 19% of any group of dolphins will participate in interaction. Young dolphins are the most likely to interact; they do seem curious about being with humans. It is believed that they see humans as “entertainment” and that the interaction is a new and unusual experience for them. It is frequently asked whether “swim-with-dolphins” tourism should be discontinued. The advice is that dolphins should be given enough periods of time throughout the day when they are not exposed to tourism. Permitted interactions should not be too disturbing to the dolphins since there could be mothers and calves (幼崽) present in dolphin groups. There should also be educational campaigns about the creatures and what is likely to cause danger to them. It is not easy to explain to someone that they cannot fulfill their lifelong dreams because the dolphins are resting, or that a mother dolphin and calf are in the area. But if we are to enjoy these remarkable animals and not just use them for our entertainment, then we must carefully monitor the “swim-with-dolphins” industry worldwide. 1、What makes “swim-with-dolphins” tourism popular? A.The local government’s encouragement. B.The improvement of people’s living standard. C.The increasing number of tourists. D.The high profits of the industry. 2、Why are young dolphins more likely to swim with humans? A.They do this out of curiosity. B.They like humans better. C.They are less sensitive. D.They prefer new things by nature. 3、What does the author suggest the “swim-with-dolphins” industry do in Paragraph 4? A.Make people know the hidden threat to dolphins. B.Strictly limit the expansion of the industry. C.Avoid interaction with young dolphins. D.Expose dolphins to tourists only in the daytime. 4、What is the author’s attitude toward “swim-with-dolphins”? A.Negative. B.Cautious. C.Supportive. D.Optimistic. 23.(8分)Machines might one day replace human laborers in a number of professions, but surely they won't ever replace human artists.Right? Think again. Not even our artists will be safe from the inevitable machine takeover,if a new development in artificial intelligence by a team of researchers from Rutgers University and Facebook's A.I.lab offers a clue of what's to come. They have designed an A.I.capable of not only producing art,but actually inventing whole new aesthetic styles similar to movements like impressionism or abstract expressionism, reports. The idea, according to researcher Marian Mazzone, was to make art that is "novel, but not too novel." The model used in this project involved a generator network, which produces the images, and a discriminator network, which "judges" whether it's art.Once the generator learns how to produce work that the distributor recognizes as art,it's given an additional directive: to produce art that doesn't match any known aesthetic styles. "You want to have something really creative and striking—but at the same time not go too far and make something that isn't aesthetically(美学地)pleasing,"explained Ahmed Elgammal. The art that was generated by the system was then presented to human judges alongside human-produced art without showing which was which. To the researchers' surprise, the machine-made art scored slightly higher overall than the human-produced art. Of course, machines can't yet replace the meaning that's infused in works by human artists, but this project shows that artist skill sets certainly seem duplicatable by machines. What will it take for machines to produce content that's infused with meaning? That might be the last A.I. frontier.Human artists can at least hang their hats in that field...for now. "Imagine having people over for a dinner party and they ask,‘Who is that by?’And you say,‘Well,it's a machine actually’.That would be an interesting conversation starter,"said Kevin Walker. 1、What is implied in the first paragraph? A.Artists won't be replaced by AI. B.AI can produce new styles of art. C.AI is totally at a loss about impressionism. D.AI fails to reflect abstract expressionism. 2、What did Marian find in his study? A.AI can copy the skills of artists. B.AI can combine content with meaning. C.AI can make art aesthetically unpleasant. D.AI can please human judges with its art. 3、What does the underlined phrase “hang their hats” mean? A.Discover. B.Hold. C.Struggle. D.Survive. 4、What Kevin said in the last paragraph tells us that_____. A.she uses machines to cook for a party B.she likes to join in a dinner party C.she expects the arrival of AI D.she cares about the starter of a chat 24.(8分) Things to Do in Atlanta This Weekend Start the year off by experiencing something new this weekend! Austin, a 4-year-old boy, and his father, Tad Perine, were watching a program on Animal Planet about a mother panda leaving her cubs. “I told him that the cubs would be homeless for a while,” Tad says. “Austin didn’t know what homelessness meant, but he was sad and wanted to know more.” Seeing this as a teachable moment, Tad took Austin to the Firehouse Ministries, a local shelter that provides housing, food, and other services for homeless men. As they drove by the redbrick building, they saw a group of 25 homeless men standing on the street corner. “Dad, they look sad.” Austin said. “Can we take them some food and make them smile?” That day, Austin used his allowance to buy each man a Burger King sandwich and handed the food out himself. Seeing what their presence meant to the men at the ministry, Austin and
