We saw many unfortunate events. However, there were also the bright news that confirmed the goodness of mankind. As a journalist, I wrote many human interesting stories during my career. That's why the story about the guys in the bakery caught my eyes. When the staff at a Mexican bakery chain in Houston were trapped inside the building for two days, they didn't sit there feeling sorry for themselves. They used their time wisely after flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey. While they were waiting for the eventual rescue that came on Monday morning, four decided to make as many loaves of bread as possible for their community. The flood water rose in the street outside. They took advantage of their emergency power supply to bake bread. They used more than 4,200 pounds of flour to create hundreds of loaves and sheets of sweet bread. Although the water kept rising, they continued baking to help more people. By the time the owner managed to get to them, they had made so much bread that we took the loaves to loads of emergency centers across the city for people affected by the floods. The store manager, Brian Alvarado, told The Independent,“Whenever a disaster occurs, nobody should just feel _forlorn_. Instead,we should take positive action to save ourselves and help others. Our acts of kindness will make a big difference.” 1、What did the bakery store workers do after flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey? A.They volunteered to make bread for their community. A.A Popular Mexican Bakery Chain in Houston B.Wait for the Eventual Rescue in a Big Disaster C.All Kinds of Disasters Caused by Hurricane Harvey in Houston D.Bake Bread to Make a Difference in Face of Hurricane Harvey 22.(8分) Scientists have provided new evidence to help solve one of the world’s oldest mysteries---zebras stripes. Researchers recently described experiments showing that horse flies have a difficult time landing on zebras while easily landing on horses of a single color. In one experiment, the researchers put blankets with stripes on horses and saw that fewer flies landed on them. "They fly past them or hit them and bounce off, "said Tim Caro of the University of California-Davis. He was the lead writer of a report on the study. The report was published in the journal PLOS ONE. Closely related to horses, the world’s three zebra species are known for their black-and-white striped bodies. Zebras are native to Africas savannas, or grasslands. The appearance of the stripes is different from one zebra to the next. There have been four main theories about the reasons why zebras developed stripes. The first theory is to avoid attacks by meat-eating animals. Another is that zebras have an easier time recognizing other zebras. a third idea is thermoregulation, which is the ability of a creature to control its body temperature, even when the surrounding temperature is different. The fourth theory is to prevent attacks by biting flies. Only the last stands up, Caro said. "Most biologists involved in research on mammal coloration accept that this is the reason why zebras have stripes. University of Bristol biologist Martin How worked with Caro on the study. He said stripes may confuse flies when they get too close to zebras. African horse flies carry diseases, such as trypanosomiasis. The sickness can cause weakness and be deadly. “In addition to stripes that prevent controlled landings by horse flies, zebras are always moving their tail and may frighten off the horse flies if they do land successfully, "Martin How said. He added that zebras are also using behavioral means to prevent flies from biting them 1、Why did the researchers put blankets with stripes on horses? A.To confuse African horse flies. B.To draw the attention of real zebras. C.To help drive away African horse flies. D.To see how African horse flies responded to them. 2、What do we learn about zebras from Paragraph 3? A.They look the same to the human eye. B.Their stripes are different from each other. C.Zebras' living habits are similar to horses. D.Three zebra species worldwide are endangered. 3、According to Tim Caro, how do zebras take advantage of their stripes? A.They keep horse flies from biting them. B.They use them to avoid attacks by other animals. C.They control their body temperature through them. D.They can easily recognize each other through the stripes. 4、Why are the disease carrier African horse flies mentioned in the text? A.To help us know more about such flies. B.To tell us how zebras survive biting flies. C.To explain about a cause of death of zebras. D.To show the necessity for zebras to avoid flies. 5、What is the best title for the text? A.Why do zebras have stripes? B.How did zebras evolve from horses? C.What is the world’s oldest mystery? D.When did zebras start to prevent horse flies? 23.(8分)Anger itself is neither good nor bad. It’s what we do when we’re angry that matters. Anger is a tool that helps us to read and respond to the social situations that bother us. But how can we keep it under control? It’s normal to think that getting angry is bad and many times we punish ourselves for doing so. But contrary to popular belief, research indicates that anger increases optimism, creativity and efficiency. In addition, studies suggest that anger can lead to more successful negotiations at work, as well as in our personal lives. In fact, suppressing(抑制)anger can be very bad for your health. In this sense, Dr. Ernest Harburg performed a study by monitoring a group of adults and their capacity(最大容量)for anger. What he found is that the men and women who suppressed their anger as a response to an unfair attack had a higher risk of developing bronchitis or suffering from heart attacks , and were more likely to die before their colleagues who let their anger surface when they felt bothered. When anger arises, we feel the need to either prevent or put an end to this powerful feeling for the benefit of our welfare or the welfare of those we care about. But this act of kindness, mercy, love or justice isn’t beneficial in this way. However, it’s certainly a good thing to be cautious when anger begins to surface. Expressing your anger can be appropriate with certain people at certain times. The question lies in how to do it without losing control. The key to expressing your anger is finding the appropriate tone for expressing what it is that upsets you. But to avoid unnecessary shouting, hitting, or other violent reactions, it’s worth taking a moment to step back and think, even though we may be in the middle of an argument with someone. 1、What do people generally think of anger? A.It is an important tool. B.It is a bad feeling state. C.It increases our happiness. D.It helps in social situations. 2、What does Dr. Emest Harburg’s study imply about anger? A.It needs a way out. B.It should be avoided. C.It can cause sudden death. D.It must be kept under control. 3、What does the author suggest we do when we’re angry? A.Find out its cause. B.Pretend to ignore it. C.React to it violently. D.Express it reasonably. 4、Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A.Ways to Control Anger B.Benefits of Mild Anger C.Showing Anger Properly Counts D.Anger Does Affect Health 24.(8分)There once lived a young man who thought himself to be poor. I'd like to give you a lot of money to exchange for them,” the wise man said. “No, I'm not going to do so! My eyes are important to me!” the young man said. Everyone is rich. We should treasure(珍惜)our wealth, and take care of it. We should not overuse it because once it is gone, it is gone forever. Only it isn’t so popular yet, and your live Studio audience isn’t giving you the big laughs the show deserves. Do you film the show all over again, hoping that this time the audience will laugh? Or is there another option for making a joke sound funnier than it was received? Sweeten(改善) the sound by adding a laugh track! “Sweetening,” or the addition of sound effects such as laughs, screams, and other audience-produced noises to the audio track of a TV show, has been used since the 1940s to produce the appearance, or rather the sound, of an engaged and entertained response to a show’s comedy. Laugh tracks came into existence as not only a solution, and sometimes replacement, for an unengaged live audience but also as a way to engage an at-home audience into a more-traditional, public, and theaterlike experience. Adding a laugh track to a television show makes the viewers at home feel much less like they’re sitting on a couch staring at the television screen and much more like they’re in a room full of laughing happy people to varying degrees of success. Though the art of sweetening has risen and fallen in popularity over the past 60 years, credit for its creation and continued use is owed to laugh-track pioneer and sound engineer Charles Douglass. Douglass was the first to develop, in 1953, a machine for producing “canned laughter”, accessible at the push of a button or pull of a lever (操纵杆). Despite being artificial, sensibly edited laugh tracks are foun
