It might even sound like they’re talking about a person they know. In a study, researchers looked at the brains of a group of people over nine days. Half of the group read the novel Pompeii, and half didn’t. After examining, researchers found the readers’ brains showed heightened connectivity (连通性) in some areas. This is likely because the brain imagines the movement and emotions of the character they read about in the book. Even though the participants were then asked not to read the novel, they kept this heightened connectivity. We call that a “shadow activity”, almost like a muscle memory. So even after you’ve finished a book, your brain keeps those benefits for some time afterwards. It has been suggested that people who read a lot of fiction become more empathic (移情作用的), because fiction is a simulation (模仿) of social experiences, in which people practice and improve their interpersonal skills. The people who not only read fiction, but felt a high level of “emotional transportation” while reading --- as compared to people who weren’t taken by the story or who read non-fiction---displayed higher levels of empathy when tested. Increase of empathy is important for people because empathy is positively related to creativity, performance at work and cooperative behaviors. Besides, reading improves “Theory of Mind”. It is “the ability to understand that others have mental states that are different from one’s own.” Of various activities, reading novels has been found to improve this ability, while watching television programs or movies has been found to do just the opposite --- a reduced understanding of others and weaker cognitive (认知的) development overall. Maybe we should put more of a priority on novel-reading. And many readers believe that reading a novel is far better and more meaningful than watching any movie. As David Kidd of the New School study said, “Fiction is not just a simulator of a social experience; it is a social experience.” 1、What is implied in the Paragraph 2? A.Reading novels is just a waste of time. B.Reading novels can help people become happy. C.Reading novels increases connectivity in our brain. D.Reading novels helps enhance our memory greatly. 2、What do we know about novel readers from Paragraph 3? A.They tend to be emotional in social experiences. B.They understand the emotions of people better. C.They like to talk about their favorite characters. D.They are more sensitive to everything. 3、What’s the effect of watching TV or movies? A.It distinguishes your views from those of others. B.It contributes to your cognitive development. C.It reduces your empathy for others a lot. D.It changes your overall mental states. 4、What does the underlined word “priority” in the last paragraph mean? A.Preference. B.Authority. C.Exposure. D.Evaluation. 23.(8分)Amazing Train Rides Taking a train in the winter is fun. The mountains turn from green to white. and you can enjoy them on the journey. Now many holiday-themed trains add fun. These repetitions and pauses can bake many forms, such as repetitions of parts of words (“li-li-like this”). Sometimes, there are moments when a sound or a period of silence is lengthened (“llllike this” or “l-ike this”). Stuttering can be classified into a number or communication disorders: neurogenic(神经性的) stuttering and psychogenic stuttering are associated with sudden onset (发作) and, as their names imply, with a specific known cause—either a problem in the makeup of the brain or a great psychological challenge. These disorders are comparatively rare and differ in terms of causes, symptoms and treatment from developmental stuttering. Developmental stuttering typically starts between the ages of two and a half and four. The onset of the disorder, which can be gradual or relatively sudden, generally occurs during the period of rapid development in a child’s language skills, motor skills, character, and social interaction. The cause of developmental stuttering are not well understood and various theories have been offered throughout the history of speech-language pathology (the study of the causes and effects of illnesses). The roots of stuttering have been believed to relate to a number of causes: emotional problems, neurological problems, improper reactions from caregivers and family members, language planning, and speech motor difficulties among others. These theories have shown the promise of explaining some characteristics of stuttering but no single theory has thoroughly described the experiences of people who stutter. Young children who have stuttered for only a short time have a high rate of natural recovery, though it is impossible to determine which children are most likely to recover and which are likely to continue stuttering. Most experts recommend early evaluation and treatment aimed at preventing the development of a chronic(慢性的) communication disorder. Speech-language pathologists disagree about which approach is best for older children and adults. Treatment options include training to change speech patterns, turning to doctors to minimize negative reactions, drugs, and electronic tools that improve fluency. Self-help and support groups also play an important role in recovery for many people who stutter. Many people who have taken stuttering treatment programs are able to make positive changes in their speech skills and communication abilities so they can communicate freely. 1、If a small child begins to stutter, his or her parents should ________. A.give their family more time B.consult a doctor immediately C.wait for the child to recover naturally D.encourage the child to speak fluently 2、What can we say about the approaches to treatment of stuttering? A.They prove to be useless for children. B.They are at the experimental stage. C.They produce positive effects. D.They work against each other. 3、The main purpose of the text is to ________. A.describe recent research on stuttering B.show us the classification of stuttering C.explain the different forms of stuttering D.offer some basic knowledge of stuttering 25.(10分) I was having a great morning until I sat down in front of my office computer. “Your password has expired(过期),” a server message flashed on my screen, with instructions for changing it. Coming up with a new code doesn’t seem like a big deal, unless you work at my company, where we have to change it monthly, using at least one uppercase character, one lowercase character, one symbol, and one numeral. Oh, and the whole darn thing can’t be fewer than eight characters. And I can’t use any of the same passwords I’ve used in the past three months. Suddenly I was
