21.(6分) Wood has many great characteristics that make it the perfect building material. It is cheap, durable(耐用的),easily available, and most importantly, environmentally sustainable. The one thing it is not,is transparent(透明的). Now thanks to a team of scientists at Stockholm's KTH Royal Institute of Technology, the material may even be able to add that feature to its already impressive list.
Lead researcher Dr. Lars Berglund said he was inspired to create the transparent wood after learning how Japanese researchers had developed a see-through paper for use in flexible display screens for electronic devices. The team began by pulling out the wood's lignin(木质素). The lignin-free wood was then dipped into a polymer(聚合物)and baked at a temperature of 158F for four hours. The result was a hybrid product that was not only stronger and lighter than the original wood but also, almost transparent. The researchers were able to adjust the level of transparency by varying the amount of the polymer injected and also by changing the thickness of the wood.
While scientists have previously created a see-through wood for small-scale applications like computer chips, he transparent wood is the first one being considered for large scale applications. The researchers, who revealed their findings in Biomacromolecules on April 11, picture using the transparent wood in buildings to allow for more natural light, or to create windows that let in the desired amount of light without sacrificing privacy.
Wood that allows light to pass through could lead to a brighter future for homes and buildings. Berglund also thinks the wood could play a significant role in the design of solar panels. The semi-transparent material would be able to keep light longer and give it more time to interact with the conductor, thus resulting in better solar efficiency. Additionally, substituting the currently used glass with this new product would help solar energy manufacturers improve their carbon footprint and lower the cost. They are now experimenting with ways to scale up the manufacturing process so that the transparent material is cost-effective to make and easy to use.

C.The cost of making the transparent wood still needs to be cut down.
D.The transparent wood would be used only for homes and buildings.
4、What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.The bright future of the transparent wood.
B.The wood's role in the design of solar panels.
C.The disadvantages of the currently used glass.
D.Solar energy manufacturers' carbon footprint.
22.(8分)It was the men’s skating finals of the Winter Olympics when I was 16. Someday I’d be in the Olympics. In fact, it was my dream.
That night I lay on our living room floor excitedly watching the battle between the Brians: American Brian Boitano facing Brian Orser in Canada. Both of them had been world champions. Both of them deserved to win. Naturally I was for Brian Boitano, a northern Californian like me. We had skated on the same ice. I held my breath in amazement. Boitano performed successfully. The gold medal! I jumped in the air when his score went up.
But what happened next is what I’ll never forget. Brian Boitano sat in front of the camera with his coach, surrounded by a group of journalist. He was talking about his career and his medal, talking to the whole world. A terrible sinking feeling went through me. I could never be in the Olympics, I thought…I could not talk in public like that. Just the idea of a press conference terrified me.
I loved skating partly because I didn’t have to talk. I could express myself with my jump sand dances better. I didn’t have to stand up and give a speech like some teachers expected. I could feel the blood rush to my face if I thought a teacher was going to call me. I stared at my shoes. I was sure I’d make a fool of myself.
The next day I was at the rink (溜冰场) as usual. I was practising a combination of jumps that had once seemed impossible. I worked very hard the next few years—on the ice and especially off. After journalists talked to me and although my heart pounded every time I spoke to them, I got to know them. They became familiar faces. And they got to know me. So when my big moment came four years after Brian’s, I was ready.
Sometimes I think my biggest accomplishment was not winning the gold but talking to the press afterwards. When you do the thing you fear most, you put an end to fear.
Fear can stop you dead in your tracks. Fear can kill a dream. What are you afraid of? What scares you more than anything else? This year, walk right up to it and conquer it, step by step.
1、What information can we get from the second paragraph?
A.The author lived a hard life.
B.The author comes from Canada.
C.The author once skated with Orser.
D.The author wished Boitano to win the match.
2、What is one of the reasons why the author liked skating according to the passage?
A.She could build up her body to be healthier.
B.It could help her to get closer to her idol.
C.She could better express herself with body language.
D.The possibility of her being a world champion was great.
3、What the author felt the most satisfied with is that .
A.she reached her coach’s expectations
B.she became a world champion as planned
C.she managed to overcome her inner fear eventually
D.she handled the balance between her career and life
4、What does the author mainly want to tell us?
A.Face a fear bravely.
B.Practice makes perfect.
C.Bad times make a good man.
D.Failure is the mother of success.
23.(8分) ‘Turtle time!, loudly called out by one of my newly-found friends, meant the beginning of either a morning or afternoon shift at Turtle Camp in Nusa Penida, Indonesia. Upon arrival at the project each day, we would look eagerly for our names on the whiteboard to see which task we would be undertaking. Would it be the highly desirable ‘turtle feeding’, the pretty fun ‘tank cleaning’, the exciting ‘medicine administering’ or the less appealing ‘fish cutting’? Fine in theory but not when every fly in Indonesia decides to crowd onto these dead fish while you’re cutting!
Life at the turtle project was fun because twice a day we got to hang out with sea turtles. By ‘hang out’, I obviously meant ‘work’, as we were on shift, but it certainly didn’t feel like work. Another fun thing was getting to know the other volunteers! With volunteers from all over the world, it was just common to hear Finnish being spoken, Australian slang mixed with French expressions and Swedes making plans to visit newly-found friends in the USA.
Of course, not all the time at Turtle Camp was consumed by volunteering. Scheduled activities included a trip to Crystal Bay, a beautiful paradise for swimming and sunbathing, an awesome beach bonfire complete with a beautiful sunset as well as our local coworkers showing off their guitar playing and singing skills.
Our time at Turtle Camp was capped off by setting free two of our turtles into the sea to begin their journey as independent turtles! Hopefully, the love and care provided at the turtle project would ensure that these turtles had a greater chance of survival in the big, wide and scary ocean.
1、Which task is less fun to the volunteers at Turtle Camp?
A.Turtle feeding. B.Tank cleaning.
C.Medicine Administering. D.Fish Cutting.
2、What does the underlined sentence imply?
A.The volunteering was a challenge.
B.The time at the camp was difficult.
C.The work at the project was a delight.
D.Communication was time-consuming.
3、When setting free the two turtles, the volunteers felt a sense of _________.
A.achievement B.belonging
C.loss D.independence
24.(8分) Each year, millions of children around the world are unable to go to school. To draw attention to this widespread problem, the United Nations(UN)is putting education first. Recently, the UN screened a documentary film called Back to School. The film is the second in a series of documentaries(纪录片)for the project Time for School.
These films follow seven children from seven different countries. This 12-year project began in 2006,when the children first started school. "This is something we could do to help the education crisis in the world,"said producer and writer Judy Katz. “Documentary film-makers can get deeply involved in a problem and do something about it.”
More than 100 million children will never set foot in a school. Sixty percent of those children are girls. Cheryl Faye, head of the UN Girls Education Initiative, spoke about the many factors that prevent girls from getting an education. One problem is the long distance many children must travel to get to school. Also, girls in many cultures are traditionally expected to marry early and work to help their families. “We need to make a special effort for girls,”Faye said.
As part of the UN's Millennium goals, the organization wants every single child to get at least an elementary education by 2018.
Students from Lawrence Middle School in New York were deeply moved after they saw the film. The seventh grade class is raising money to help build a library on the outskirts of Nairobi,Kenya(肯尼亚),where Joab-a child in the documentary-lives. The class teacher,Karen Weiner, and the class are known in their school as the “Kenya crew”. All the kids were really happy to support Joab and said they felt great about their fund-raising efforts. Like the seventh graders at Lawrence Middle School, kids can work together to make a difference in places like Nairobi. By raising money for education, kids can help children on the other side of the world have a chance of a better, happier life.
