All over the world our cafes not only serve great food, but they serve up great music.” Hard Rock Cafes around the world symbolize the timeless energy, originality and unifying (团结的) spirit that have helped to shape rock music over the last century. Founded by two Americans, the first Hard Rock Cafe (HRC) opened its doors to the public on June 14, 1971, in London. Today, HRC has become a global phenomenon with more than 180 cafes in different countries. HRC has also become the world’s leading collector and exhibitor of rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia. It all started when Eric Clapton, a regular at the first HRC, asked the staff if they could hang his guitar on the wall to mark his favourite stool (凳子) as “his spot”. They did and one week later, a package from Pete Townshend arrived with a guitar and a note with the message, “Mine’s as good as his! Love, Pete.” Ever since then, Hard Rock Cafes have been collecting pieces of rock memorabilia and covering their walls with them. Their collection is rotated from restaurant to restaurant and provides the world’s most comprehensive “visual history” of rock ‘n’ roll. These treasures include an awe-inspiring collection of classic guitars and other instruments, posters, music, etc. Throughout its history, HRC has been governed by a special service philosophy: “Love All — Serve All.” Since it was established, HRC has taken part in a wide variety of humane activities around the world. Following its idea of being more than just a restaurant, HRC tries to connect its business and its passion to make the earth a safer, healthier and better place to live. All in all, Hard Rock Cafe International is an entertainment company that continues to successfully expand the Hard Rock brand through countless music-related activities. 1、What is the purpose of the first paragraph? A.To explain why HRC is a success. B.To show the characteristics of HRC. C.To describe the excellent service of HRC. D.To introduce what you can share in a HRC. 2、Why did Pete send his guitar to the first HRC in London? A.He wanted to occupy a seat. B.He wanted to pay his bill with it. C.It was advocated by Eric Clapton. D.It was financed by regular customers. 4、What does the HRC’s service philosophy imply? A.HRC welcomes everyone to the cafe. B.HRC is operated for a charitable purpose. C.HRC offers various activities to its customers. D.HRC provides the best service at the lowest price. 22.(8分) Dreaming of summer picnics filled with family and fun? We’ve come up with 4 of the top picnic areas across the US. Cumberland Islands, Georgia Just a few hours south of Savannah, this national seashore is a picnic paradise. It’s an unspoiled place in the Deep South with over 50 miles of hiking trails (小径). Covered in Spanish moss, the trails are lined with trees and since it’s still a rural area, the stars line up for a spectacular show at night and create the perfect evening starlit picnic opportunity. Grant Park, Chicago If you are looking for delicious food in Chicago, go for a taste of a 20-day, lake-front, foodie festival that happens in October each year. Grab a spot near the fountain to enjoy your picnic, appreciate the city scenery and lake views and relax with family and friends. If you are there on July 4th, be sure to plan the day to include the fireworks display at the Navy Pier. Cranberry Islands, Maine Here, you’ll enjoy natural picnics with island views. The islands are a delightful group of islands about 20 minutes offshore from Acadia National Park. You can visit the islands by private boat or ferry (渡船) service. Bring a picnic basket along for the ride as it’s a romantic picnic area to take your special someone or go for a family outing to visit the islands. Big Sur, California The Point Lobos State Reserve is a small gem. Besides the coastal wildlife there are rare plant communities, and unique geological formations. It’s good to have a picnic there. We recommend bringing a telescope, because much of the wildlife can be seen only at a distance. 1、What are Cumberland Islands like? A.They are just next to Savannah. B.They haven’t lost their naturalness. C.They are almost covered in Spanish moss. D.They have a spectacular show every night. 2、Where can you enjoy observing wildlife with a telescope? B.To share personal stories about picnics. C.To tell readers some good ways to relax. D.To offer readers tips for winter holiday. 4、Where can we most probably read this passage? A.In a personal dairy. B.In a science report. C.In a travel magazine. D.In a geography textbook. 23.(8分)Before you walked down the aisle—if you even did---did you first agree to take your partner’s name? had you agreed to the bank for updated credit cards, changed your email address, and updated your Facebook? I didn't; and I know plenty of women out there didn't, either. So I was pretty shocked to learn that in a recent survey, over 50 percent of U.S. citizens believe a wife should take her husband's name—and she should be required to do so by law. Author Emily Schafer, a sociology professor at Portland State University, surveyed a representative national sample of 1,200 people tar the study, which found that a larger number of American adults think there needs to actually be a law in place to prevent women from keeping their own name. The most common reason given? The general belief is that women should prioritize(优先)their marriage and their family ahead of themselves. To this, I admit I'm a bit confused, because I don't understand how exactly riot taking your husband’s last name means you aren't prioritizing your marriage. Now, I didn't take my husband's name for a variety of reasons: I didn’t feel like the name was "mine" and professionally I had built up a reputation as a writer under my maiden(未婚的)name, so I didn't want to lose that. His surname wasn't easy to spell, either; everyone gets it wrong (including my mother—still—and we've been married 13 years). But most of all, I felt like in taking my husband's last name, I was losing a huge sense of self. And while yes, we are a family, I don't want his surname to define me. I'm not his possession. Just like every aspect of motherhood, each woman should be respected for the choices she makes—without having to do anything by law. And we should all be grateful to Lucy Stone—the first American woman to legally maintain her last name after marriage in 1856.Just imagine how difficult that must have been to forego tradition in that time? 1、What can be learned about the tradition of taking a husband's name from the survey? A.A law should be there to break the tradition. B.The majority of American adults support the tradition. C.The majority of American women go against the tradition. D.The law requires wives to take their husbands' names in America. 2、Why does an American woman generally take her husband's name? A.To value her marriage and family. B.To show honesty to her husband. C.To join in the family of her husband. D.To unite a new family under the same name. 3、What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about? A.Why the author didn't use her husband's name. B.Why the author's mother didn't like her husband. C.How worthy the author's own maiden name was. D.How bored the author became with her husband's name. 4、What does the author think of the tradition? A.It's reasonable B.It isn’t worth caring C.Every coin has two sides D.It's out of date and confusing. 24.(8分) One of the statements that many experts seem to agree on is the fact that the great things starts to happen the minute you step outside of your comfort zones. As soon as you decide that you are willing to go beyond what is safe, the possibilities are endless. For me, one of the most important things that we should always keep in mind is the fact that growth and comfort can’t coexist. Personal development author Napoleon Hill once said: “Whatever the mind can understand and believe, the mind can achieve. Regardless of how many times you may have failed in the past or how lofty(崇高的) your aims and hopes may be.” This statement is especially powerful because it reminds us that we are the only ones who can be responsible for how far we will go. However, stepping outside of our comfort zone is probably the most important step to experiencing real change. For a long time, I knew that I wanted to live in Argentina, so halfway through my bachelor’s degree, I bought a one-way ticket there. While in Argentina, I finished the last two years of my degree online before flying back home for graduation. I currently still live in Argentina, and I can proudly say that taking the necessary steps to make it a reality was one of the most important things I could have done. This, of course, by no means at all applies to everyone, and I’m not implying we should all buy one-way tickets to foreign countries and see what happens. But it’s important to know that we should recognize what we desire and try to bring our dreams to life. Living in a comfort zone can trick us into believing that we have an abundant amount of time when, in reality, we all know that years can fly by without us having accomplished much of what we really wanted to do. So why wait? I’m thankful that I didn’t put off my move until a later date because I would have missed out on a lot of amazing life experiences that have shaped me as a person. If we want to experience even a small amount of change, we will have to step outside of it. 1、Why do people prefer staying in comfort zone? A.It makes people feel safe. B.It leads to great things. C.It is important for growth. D.It helps make wise decisions. 2、What does Napoleon Hill’s statement mean? A.Time and tide wait for no man. B.The higher you fly, the harder you fail. C.Failure is the mother of success. D.Nothing is impossible to a willing heart. 3、Which matters most to the author in his/her story? A.Moving to Argentina. B.Getting the bachelor’s degree. C.Studying online. D.Flying back for graduation. 4、The author used his/her story to ________. A.persuade others to follow his/her example B.encourage others to take immediate action C.inform people of different foreign culture D.remind people to be thankful in life 5、Which one could be the best title? A.Identify your comfort zone. B.Value your precious time. C.Always try something new. D.Make the best decisions. 25.(10分)Asking a patient to hum(哼唱)piano tunes and play fin instrument while undergoing brain surgery(手术)may sound like a strange request from a doctor. However, that is exactly what a team of brain specialists, led by Pilcher, requested Dan Fabbio to do. In 2015,the then 25-year-old musician was diagnosed with a brain tumor(肿瘤),which was located in the part of the brain known to be active when people listen to and make music.“Removing a tumor from the brain can have significant consequences depending on its location,”Pilcher says.“Both the tumor and the operation can damage tissue and affect communic
