21.(6分)Teenagers will be told to "stand up for their elders" on public transport — or risk losing their right to free travel.
London Mayor Boris Johnson will declare plans today to make youngsters sign a “courtesy pledge" (文明宣言) to promise to behave in a respectful manner when travelling in the capital. The three-point pledge states that they will give up their seats to the elderly, pregnant and disabled; keep from using offensive or threatening language; and be courteous and polite to fellow passengers and staff.
Those who refuse, or are caught behaving in a loutish manner, will have their free travel passes removed. The plan — a key part of Mr. Johnson's re-election bid— will initially affect the 400,000 11-to-15-year-olds in London who qualify for free travel cards, but Tory sources believe the idea could be used across the country.
A Conservative insider said: "The plan corresponds perfectly with the push to create a Big Society. It is about changing culture and expectations around behavior to improve the atmosphere on buses and trains for everyone."
Speaking before today's launch, Mr. Johnson said he was determined to deal with the anti-social behavior of a "minority of youngsters" on public transport. "When I was a boy, I was taught to stand up for those less able to, "he said. "Youngsters enjoy the privilege of free travel, which is paid for by Londoners, but they have to understand that with that privilege comes responsibility. Anyone who abuses this privilege will have it taken away, and will have to earn that right bach ."
Teenagers found guilty of a serious violation of the new behavior rules will lose their travel passes, and will have to carry out unpaid community work to earn them back.
Mr. Johnson is also introducing a "two strikes and you're out" policy to deal with repeat offenders, under which those committing a second serious violation of the rules will lose their travel rights permanently.
1、Which of the following is NOT the content of the "courtesy pledge"?
A.Teenagers should give up their seats to the old.
B.Teenagers shouldn't talk with strangers in public.
C.Teenagers mustn't use aggressive language in public.
D.Teenagers must be polite to people on public transport.
2、What does the underlined word "loutish" in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A.rude. B.stupid.
C.polite. D.calm.
3、According to Mr Johnson,____________.
A.youngsters should know duty comes with benefit.
B.youngsters shouldn't use the privilege of free travel.
C.anyone shouldn't make money with the privilege.
D.youngsters should do some unpaid community work.
22.(8分)Traditionally, patients who want to improve their heart health have received four main suggestions from their doctors: Eat a healthy diet, get more exercise, quit smoking, and enjoy proper amounts of alcohol. Plenty of research backs up these four pieces of advice: Large studies have found that making improvements in these four areas lowers the chance of dying of heart disease by 67 percent.
But lately, researchers are starting to recognize that there should be five recommendations on that list, not just four. They’re discovering that getting enough sleep is a powerful health protector as well. When researchers include enough sleep in their studies as a fifth cardio-preventive behavior change, they find that it lowers the chance of dying of heart disease even more: Adding a good seven hours of sleep a night in addition to making positive changes in diet, exercise, smoking, and alcohol intake lowers the chance of dying of heart disease by 83 percent.
When that news started coming out, doctors began adding sleep onto their list of recommended health behavior changes. But as an expert in heart disease, I don’t think sleep belongs at the bottom of the list. I think it should be at the top. I believe that getting enough sleep – at least seven to eight hours per night for most people –is the most important health behavior change you can make to improve the health of your heart and your overall health.
Sure, I’d prefer that everyone make all of the big five lifestyle changes, but if I could only choose one, I’d pick sleep because when you are well-rested, you have more power to make the right choices about what you eat and drink, and you have more energy to exercise and kick bad habits such as smoking and overeating. But when you’re exhausted, everything in life is more difficult.
1、What does plenty of research show about the 4 common suggestions?
A.They should be reconsidered.
B.They are the best ways found so far.
C.They are not as helpful as expected.
D.They help improve people’s health.
2、What does the latest research show?
A.Various factors lead to good heart health.
B.Enough sleep contributes to good heart health.
C.Seven hours’ sleep is most important to the heart.
D.The chance of dying of heart disease has dropped.
3、How did the doctors react to the news on sleep?
A.They just ignored it.
B.They discussed it publicly.
C.They thought it made sense.
D.They totally changed their mind.
4、What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.What the importance of a healthy lifestyle is.
B.Why different factors need to work together.
C.What prevents people from living healthily.
D.Why the author makes sleep his No. 1 suggestion.
23.(8分)Fearful parents are saying not to sleep-overs(在别人家里过夜), banning children as old as 15 from using public transport on their own and watching over their kids like hawks(鹰)at the local park, according to a new British study.
The survey of 6,099 people commissioned by LV, a charity that educates children about safety, showed that nearly a quarter of children aged 15 or under were not allowed to sleep at a friend's house, 60 percent were forbidden to travel on public transport alone and 43 percent couldn't go to the park without a parent or guardian(监护人).
It said more than 60 percent of mums and dads think the world is more dangerous than when they were kids. "It's difficult for parents to know when is the right time to step back and allow children to experience things on their own, "said one person in the survey.
In contrast, just four percent of today's adults said they were banned from sleeping-over when they were 15 or younger, only two percent were forbidden to use public transport, and the same number couldn't go out on their own in familiar surroundings, such as their local town or park.
“Stranger danger” is the number one worry for over half of all parents (54 percent), followed by bullying(欺侮)(47), mugging (46) and road danger (34). On average, children today can look forward to walking to school on their own by the age of 11, use public transport on their own at 12,and babysit their brother or sister by the time they're 14.
In contrast, parents say they were allowed to walk to school unaccompanied at the age of nine, use public transport alone by the time they were 11, and babysit a brother or sister by the time of their 12th birthday.
Parents know they are being tougher on their children and over a third said they felt uneasy that their kids do not get the same opportunities as they did to experience freedom as a youngster.
1、Most parents have more control over their children because_______.
A.they love their children more than their parents did in the past
B.they are more protective than their parents were
C.they think the world is more dangerous than it was in the past
D.they think children don't need to experience things on their own
2、According to the survey,children nowadays______.
A.pay more attention to their safety
B.have less freedom than their parents' generation
C.grow up in a better environment
D.have no ability to ensure their own safety
3、What would be the best title of the passage?
A.Kids want the same freedom as their parents.
B.When can children have their freedom?
C.Why are children not allowed to sleep-over.
D.Fearful British parents keep kids closer than ever.
24.(8分)I was delighted to receive a copy of Marie Curie and her Daughters by Shelley Emling through my letter-box a few weeks ago.
Actually science has never really been my “thing”. At school I really struggled with physics and chemistry and was much happier in English Language or History classes. My mind is not structured enough to understand how science works, I’m a bit of a daydreamer and prefer using my imagination rather than learning facts, figures and formulae(公式). Of course I knew who Marie Curie was, her great achievements, her contribution to science, to medical advances and influence on the world, but other than that, I really had very little idea about her life.
Shelley Emling has based this book on Marie Curie’s relationship with her two daughters, Irene and Eve. The book begins after the early death of Pierre Curie, when Marie is left to carry on the work that they started as a couple and to bring up her two small daughters alone. Emling has concentrated her book on the communication between Marie and her daughters. She was not an overly-protective mother, nor did she hesitate to spend time away from her daughters, yet this did not weaken their relationship. Marie was a caring and loving mother, who encouraged her daughters to become individuals, to achieve what they wanted to.
Marie Curie and her husband made the decision not to profit from their discoveries. It was because of this that Marie had to depend on donations to carry out her work, and that she had to carry out tours of the States.
I was very impressed by Emling’s writing style — she has told the story of three extraordinary women who were way ahead of their time in an interesting and very readable manner.
1、What is the writer good at?
A.Physics and chemistry.
B.Facts, figures and formulae.
C.English and History.
D.Daydreaming.
2、What is Marie Curie like in the eyes of Irene and Eve?
A.She makes a pet of them like babies.
B.She avoids staying away from them.
C.She encourages them to build their own characters.
D.She wants to be involved in every area of their life.
3、Why did Marie Curie tour the States?
A.Because she meant to make herself a famous person.
B.Because she wished to introduce the medical advances to people in the U. S. A.
C.Because she needed money to bring up her two small daughters by herself.
D.Because she decided to continue her work without money made from discoveries.
4、The book written by Shelley Emling focuses on ________.
A.the connection between Marie Curie and her daughters
B.the contributions Marie Curie made to the world
C.the research work of Marie Curie and her husband
D.the decision made by Marie Curie and her husband
