The National Safety Council data shows a 6 percent increase in deaths in 2018 when compared with 2015 and a 3 percent increase in the number of miles Americana drove in 2016. “Motor vehicle fatality numbers have been ringing the alarm for two years,”Hersman said.“Unfortunately,we have been blind to the data and the killings on our roadways. If we fail to take action, the death tell will continue to rise.” “The trend is clear:After years of progress, highway deaths are heading in the wrong direction,”said Jonathan Adkins,a state safety official. The number of people killed reached a record low of 32,675 in 2014,according to NHTSA statistics. That record followed a fairly steady downward track for the past six years that experts attributed it primarily to safety features that have been built into cars and trucks. Safety advances including increased seat-belt use,air bags,anti-lock braking, stability controls and electronic warnings and cameras. The bad economy and high gas prices also influenced the reduction in deaths. Now,with unemployment and gas prices both low, more people are driving for work and pleasure trips. “It’s not just that Americans drive more miles when the economy improves ;it’s the kind of miles they drive,”said Adrian Lund, president of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. 1、What’s Hersman’s attitude towards the present situation? A.It has been getting better. B.It can hardly be improved. C.The efforts are far from enough. D.Much work hart already been done. 2、What do we learn about the number of highway deaths in 2013 in America? A.It’s lower than that in 2014. B.It’s lower than that in 2010. A.Traffic Deaths Are on the Rise B.Highway Deaths Will Drop off C.Measures to Handle Car Crashes D.Safety Advances in Cars Are Made 23.(8分)Scientists think they have the answer to a puzzle that confused even Charles Darwin: How flowers evolved and spread to become the most important plants on Earth. Flowering plants, or angiosperms, make up about 90% of all living plant species. In the distant past, they outpaced (超过) plants such as conifers and fems (针叶植物和蕨类植物),but how they did this has been a mystery. New research suggests it is due to genome (基因组) size. Hundreds of millions of years ago, the Earth was dominated (支配) by ferns and conifers. Then, about 150 million years ago, the first flowering plants appeared on the scene. They quickly spread to all parts of the world, changing the landscape from muted green to a variety of colours. Why angiosperms were successful and diverse on Earth has been debated for centuries. Charles Darwin himself called it a“mystery”, fearing this apparent sudden leap might challenge his theory of evolution. Kevin Simonin from San Francisco State University in California, US and other researchers wondered if the size of the plant’s genetic material—or genome—might be important. They analysed data held by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, on the genome size of hundreds of plants, including flowering plants, gymnosperms (a group of plants including conifers) and fems. They then compared genome size with anatomical (结构上的) features. This provides “strong evidence”, that the success and rapid spread of flowering plants around he world is due to “genome downsizing.” By shrinking the size of the genome, which is contained within the nucleus of the cell, plants can build smaller cells. In tum, this allows greater carbon dioxide uptake (摄入)and carbon gain from photosynthesis, the process by which plants use light energy to turn carbon dioxide and water into sugar and oxygen. The researchers say genome—downsizing happened only in the angiosperms, and his was “a necessary condition for rapid growth rates among land plants”. 1、What do you know about angiosperms? A.They are dominant plants on Earth. B.They are rare plants in South Africa. C.They are topical plants in South Asia. D.They are extinct plants in the world. 2、It can be inferred that . A.Charles Darwin was confident of his theory of evolution B.Kevin Simonin is probably an American biologist C.Kev in Simonin works in the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew D.Charles Darwin succeeded in figuring out the flower evolution 3、Which of the following contributed to the success and diversity of angiosperms? A.The weaker conifer. B.The larger nucleus. C.The smaller genome. D.The stronger cell. 4、Which of the following is the best title? A.How Angiosperms Conquered the World? B.W hat Puzzle Confused Even Charles Darwin? C.Why Gymnosperms Were Successful on Earth? D.When Angiosperms Outpaced Conifers and Fems? 24.(8分)A start-up company in California, called Zume, is testing machines that make pizza. The robot takes and shapes dough to create the base of the pizza. It then adds tomato sauce, cheese, meat or other toppings. Next, the robot places the uncooked pizza into a hot oven. A few minutes later, the pizza is ready. The pizza comes out the same each time. Zume says the robots work quickly and do not get sick. The robots do not get paid either. Julia Collins is the company’s founder and chief executive officer (CEO). Her business can spend money on better food products because it does not have to pay the robots. Zume is using robots to make pizza. Charity Suzuki has bought the robot-made pizza. She likes its taste. “It’s delicious. It’s always hot and fresh when it comes. I mean it’s great that they’re making it, but I can’t tell the difference that it’s made by a robot versus a human.” The companies say they are developing robots so people can get higher quality food faster. But what about the jobs the robots are taking from humans? Ken Goldberg is a professor at the University of California in Berkeley. He also directs the school’s automation laboratory. Goldberg said researchers have been working with robots for 50 years. He said that, while there has been progress, the jobs are not going to disappear right away. “I want to reassure restaurant workers that the skills that they have are still going to be of value,” Goldberg said. “We’re going to get rid of boring, repetitive, dangerous jobs and we’re going to free up people to do things that have higher value. There’s going to be amazing new ways of working that don’t exist yet that are going to be created.” 1、Why can Zume devote more money on better food products? A.It earns a lot by selling pizza. B.It wants to create more robots. C.It can save a lot by using robots. D.It hopes to attract more customers. 2、What can we know about the robot-made pizza according to Suzuki? A.It really agrees with her. B.It is hot and fresh all the time. C.It is tastier than the man-made. D.It is delicious and free of charge. 3、What’s the benefit of robots’ making pizza? A.They work efficiently. B.They help sick people. C.They need little payment. D.They produce more food. 4、What does Goldberg think of the jobs of restaurant workers? A.Disappearing. B.Boring. C.Dangerous. D.Necessary. 25.(10分) “Mum, what does it mean when someone tells you that they have a skeleton(骨骼)in the closet(衣橱)?” Jessica asked. “A skeleton in the closet?” her mother paused thoughtfully, “Well, it’s something that you would rather not have anyone else know about. For example, if in the past, someone in Dad’s family had been arrested for stealing a horse, It would be ‘a skeleton in his family’s closet’. He really wouldn’t want any neighbor to know about it.” “Why pick on my family?” Jessica’s father said with anger. “Your family history isn’t so good, you know. Wasn’t your great-great-grandfather a prisoner who was transported to Australia for his crimes?” “Yes, but people these days say that you are not a real Australian unless your ancestors arrived as prisoners.” Gosh, sorry I asked. I think I understand now,” Jessica cut in before things grew
