She let her eyes lazily scan the landscape for wildlife. Then a deer came into view about 200 yards in front of them. "Dad, there's a deer there!" Alexis said. It was a male deer with sharp antlers (角) on each side of its head. As the car moved closer, Alexis saw that the deer's head was bent toward the ground. Then she heard a scream and saw an arm fly up near the deer's head. Alexis realized the deer was attacking a woman. Sue, a 44-year-old mother, had been out for her morning run. The deer followed her and edged closer. "I knew I was in trouble," Sue says. She went to pick up a stick for self-defense, and the deer charged. It lifted her with its antlers and threw her into the air. Sue could feel blood flew down her leg. Within seconds, the deer had pushed her off the road. When Alexis and her father pulled up, the deer was throwing Sue like a doll. Alexis looked into the woman's terrified eyes, and before her father had even stopped the car, the teenager jumped quickly out of the car and ran toward the deer. "I was kicking it to get its attention," she says. Then her father, who had followed his daughter, pushed the deer away from the women. Alexis helped Sue into the car, and then applied a piece of cloth to Sue's injured leg. "We're going to get you to a hospital," Alexis said. Then she heard her father shout loudly. He had been knocked to the ground. Alexis took hold of a hammer from the car and ran to where her father lay on his back. She beat the deer's head and neck, but the blows didn't scare it away. "I was losing faith," she says. "A couple more strikes, Alexis," said her father. "You can do it." Turning the hammer around, Alexis closed her eyes and beat the deer's neck with all her strength. When she opened her eyes, the deer was running away. Alexis got in the driver's seat and sped toward the nearest hospital. After Sue was treated, she tearfully thanked her rescuers. "You expect a teenage girl to get on the phone and call for help," she says, "not to beat up a deer." 1、What was Sue doing when she was attacked by the deer? A.She was driving home. B.She was resting on the road. C.She was taking exercise. D.She was feeding wild animals. 2、What did Alexis do to save Sue? A.She pushed the deer away. B.She hit the deer with her feet. C.She drove the car to hit the deer. D.She beat the deer with a hammer. 3、Which of the following words can best describe Alexis? A.Strong. B.Cruel. C.Energetic. D.Brave. 4、What is the best title for the passage? A.A Woman Was Seriously Injured B.A Dangerous Deer Attacked a Woman C.A Girl Rescued Her Father Successfully D.A Teenager Saved Others from a Deer Attack 22.(8分)Conformity involves changing your behaviour to “fit in” or “go along” with the people around you. In some cases, this social influence might involve agreeing with or acting like the majority of people in a specific group, or involve behaving in a particular way to be viewed as “normal” by the group. Actually, conformity is something that happens regularly in our social world. Sometimes we’re aware of our behaviour, but in many cases it happens without much thought or awareness on our parts. And even in some cases we go along with things we disagree with or behave in ways we know we shouldn’t. There are countless examples of conformity in life. For instance, a teenager dresses in a certain style because he wants to fit in with the rest of the teenagers in his social group. A woman reads a book for her book club and really enjoys it. When she attends her book club meeting, the other members all dislike the book. Rather than go against the group opinion, she simply agrees with the others that the book is terrible. Why do we conform? In many cases, looking to the rest of the group for clues for how we should behave can actually be helpful. Others might have greater knowledge or experience than we do, so following their lead can actually be instructive. And in some cases, we conform to the expectations of the group to avoid looking foolish. This tendency can become especially strong in situations where we aren’t quite sure how to act. Additionally, there are some situations where we conform just in order to avoid punishments or gain rewards. There are many factors that influence conformity. For example, not knowing how to perform a difficult task makes people more likely to conform. Personal characteristics such as motivation to achieve and strong leadership abilities are linked with a decreased tendency to conform. And people are more likely to conform in situations that involve between three and five other people. 1、What can we learn about conformity from the first paragraph? A.Actually it is rare for us to conform. B.Blind conformity should be criticized. C.Sometimes people tend to conform unconsciously. D.Conformity means changing your behaviour reluctantly. 2、Which of the following is a case of conformity? A.Joining a certain organization. B.Following the ongoing fashion. C.Sharing something personal with others. D.Giving up your creative ideas cautiously. 3、When are we most likely to conform according to the text? A.When we are at a loss. B.When we are rejected. C.When we feel threatened. D.When we feel uncomfortable. 4、What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A.Conformity cannot be avoided by anyone. B.Conformity is linked to the size of the group. C.Conformity is a natural response to challenges. D.Conformity isn’t related to individual differences. 23.(8分)Squatting down on my disorganized closet floor, I looked eagerly through my albums for the picture of my grandma’s Christmas lights. I searched so long and so eagerly that I lost all feeling in the legs. Ignoring the pain, I went on with my search, because finding the picture was worth it. My beloved grandma on my dad’s side, who passed away almost four years ago, would decorate the Christmas trees like it was her job. Each year she would decorate an ornate, 12-foot-tall, shining tree in her living room, and most years she would have an additional pink tree, palm tree, colored- light tree, white-light tree, bedroom tree, etc. The ideas varied year after year, but the theme was always the same: Let There Be Light. For the outside of the house, my grandma hired people to come and string thousands of lights through the trees in her yard. It wasn’t easy, and it wasn’t cheap, but it was a labor of love. People in the small town came and parked their kid-packed cars on the street, gazing at the thousands upon thousands of shining lights year after year. They brought us magic, which was grandma’s legacy. That is the family act I am supposed to follow for the rest of my life. It’s what I’m dying to recreate and pass on to my own kids. I feel so much pressure because no one is capable of doing it—and of doing it correctly—but me. So, it’s me and only me, each year unfastening countless strings of lights, winding them round a 10-foot, prickly tree, and sending the lights to the highest branches. Though I’m only ever just scratching the surface of grandma’s magic, I uncover a little more each year. I still haven’t found that picture of my grandma’s Christmas lights, but I know it exists, and I will find it, even if it means losing all feeling in my legs. 1、Why did the author suffer from pain? A.Because she was missing her beloved grandma. B.Because she had trouble finding grandma’s lights. C.Because she kept an uncomfortable gesture for long. D.Because she broke her legs while searching for something. 2、What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about? A.Grandma’s Christmas trees. B.The atmosphere of Christmas. C.The beauty of Christmas trees. D.Christmas memories in childhood. 3、Which of the following best describes grandma’s yard on Christmas? A.Colourful and messy. B.Interesting and dizzy. C.Noisy and crowded. D.Shiny and attractive. 4、What’s the authors attitude towards her grandma’s way to spend Christmas? A.It is the best way people like. B.It is her duty to pass it on. C.It needs to be improved. D.It is too costly to do it. 24.(8分)Upcoming Music festivals and concerts in Boston in 2019 New Bedford Folk Festival 2019 The 24th Annual New Bedford Folk Festival will feature the best in contemporary, traditional and Celtic folk music. I think it will be a good idea to learn now because I have plenty of free time and am earning a little money to pay for lessons. I never learnt when I lived in the UK, so luckily driving on the “wrong” side isn’t a problem. However, there are a lot of rules to remember. When you see a road to your right and there are no white lines on the ground, the cars to your right have the right to go before your car and you have to stop for them. In practice, lots of people forget this and cars either wait for each other while both drivers try to remember what to do, or beep (鸣喇叭) at each other if both try to go at the same time! When you drive round a roundabout, you should check all your mirrors. To remember how to do this, I often count them aloud—one, two, three—then a second glance a
