Organic food, grown without artificial chemicals, is increasingly popular nowadays. Consumers have been willing to pay up to twice more for goods with organic labels (商标). However, if you think paying a little more for organic food gets you a more nutritious and safer product, you might want to save your money. A study led by researchers at Stanford University says that organic products aren't necessarily more nutritious, and they're no less likely to suffer from disease-causing bacteria, either. The latest results, published in the Annuals of Internal Medicine, suggest that buyers may be wasting their money. "We did not find strong evidence that organic food is more nutritious or healthier," says Dr. Crystal Smith-Spangler from Stanford. "So consumers shouldn't assume that one type of food has a lower risk or is safer." For their new study, Smith-Spangler and her colleagues conducted a review of two categories of research, including 17 studies that compared health outcomes between consumers of organic against traditional food products, and 223 studies that analyzed the nutritional content of the foods, including key vitamins, minerals and fats. While the researchers found little difference in nutritional content, they did find that organic fruit and vegetables were 20% less likely to have chemicals remaining on the surfaces. Neither organic nor traditional foods showed levels of chemicals high enough to go beyond food safety standards. And both organic and traditional meats, such as chicken and pork, were equally likely to be harmed by bacteria at very low rates. The researchers did find that organic milk and chicken contained higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, a healthy fat also found in fish that can reduce the risk of heart disease. However, these nutritional differences were too small, and the researchers were unwilling to make much of them until further studies confirm the trends. Organic food is produced with fewer chemicals and more natural-growing practices, but that doesn't always translate into a more nutritious or healthier product. The U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) states that "whether you buy organic or not, finding the freshest foods available may have the biggest effect on taste." Fresh food is at least as good as anything marketed as organic. 1、The new research questions whether organic food __________. A.should replace traditional food B.has been overpriced by farmers C.is grown with less harmful chemicals D.is really more nutritious and healthier 2、Smith-Spangler and her colleagues found that __________. A.organic food could reduce the risk of heart disease B.traditional food was grown with more natural methods C.both organic and traditional food they examined were safe D.there was not a presence of any forms of bacteria in organic food 3、Which of the following is relatively healthier according to the passage? A.Organic chicken and pork. B.Organic milk and chicken. C.Traditional chicken and pork. D.Traditional fruit and vegetables. 4、What is the author’s attitude toward organic food? The chain of events started with Dimas, who was always wondering why he did not look like the four sisters he grew up with.He was 14 when his doubts grew after watching a TV news report on babies getting switched at birth because of mistakes at hospitals. He wanted to do a DNA test, but it was too expensive for the family. A decade later,Dimas did it on his own.The DNA test showed that he was not the birth son of the man and woman who had raised him.The news was a shock for his parents. They at first refused to believe the results, but eventually decided to help him look for his biological parents. The search began at the Madre Regina Protmann Hospital where records were checked. The hospital searched its records and found Elton Plaster was born there on the same day. The records led Dimas to the 35-acre farm where Piaster lived, with his parents,Nilza and Adelson,in the town of Santa Maria de Jetiba, about 30 miles from the Aliprandi home in Joao Neiva. After tests, the Plasters discovered that Elton was the biological son of the man and woman that Dimas had been calling Mom and Dad for 24 years.Meanwhile, the couple Elton, had always regarded as his biological parents were Dimas’ parents. About a year ago,Aliprandi and the parents who raised him accepted an offer from the Plasters to move to their farm, where they built a home.“This is the way it should be,”Adelson Plaster recently told Globo TV.“We are all together and I now have two sons living and working here.” 1、Who was the first to discover the baby switch? C.They helped Dimas find his birth parents. D.They went to Globo TV for more information. 4、Who are Elton Plaster’s biological parents? A.The Aliprandis. B.The Plasters. C.Dimas and Elton. D.Nilza and Adelson. 23.(8分)Safety is a huge concern whenever I run with my earphones in. But I need music to run. Otherwise all I hear is the sound of my own breathing. So I’ve found a compromise: I run with only one earphone in. The music sounds off. It’s an imperfect solution. An updated pair of headphones, called AfterShokz, aim to do better. AfterShokz bills itself as using bone conducting technology to conduct music from the front of the ear, delivering sound through your cheekbone and inner ear. This keeps your eardrum (鼓膜) free to hear everything else. “Earbuds (耳塞式耳机) are typically designed to block out all sound, which is fine when you’re inside. But when you’re outside, you need all your senses. It would be like sending you out cycling with a blindfold on,” says Rod Annet, managing director of AfterShokz. Here’s where AfterShokz comes in. The headphones hook over the back of your head with the main “bud” resting high up against your cheek. This keeps your ear free to delight in other sounds. So do they work? In a word, yes. During a 45-minute jog, they didn’t bounce or shift. I heard far more of my environment than I normally do: a nearby bike there; a runner passing me again to my left; and so forth. What about the downsides? If you’re a huge fan of high-quality sound, you might find the headphones a bit tinny. One friend expressed concerns about missing the ability to get lost in the music as you might be distracted by other noises, although I personally didn’t find that an issue. Yet those are all minor details. For me, probably the biggest problem is the price. Ranging between £ 49.96 to £ 83.29, AfterShokz headphones aren’t exactly cheap. With all that considered, would I recommend them? Yes. AfterShokz headphones are quite useful. While out jogging, they were light, painless, and easy to use. They made me feel safer. 1、What is special about AfterShokz headphones? A.They are a good choice for inside use. B.They allow users to hear other sounds. C.They can make music sound more beautiful. D.They can deliver sound through your eardrum. 2、What does the author’s friend think of AfterShokz headphones? A.They prevent users getting lost. B.They deliver high—quality sound. C.They often move while users are running. D.They fail to allow users to enjoy the music. 3、The author thinks AfterShokz headphones . A.are too expensive B.seem quite useless C.make users feel pain D.are too complex to use 4、What is the main purpose of the text? A.To express worries. B.To introduce a product. C.To share a personal story. D.To complain about a product. 24.(8分)Still seeking a destination for your weekend break? There are some places which are probably a mere walk away from your college. King's Art Centre A day at the Centre could mean a visit to an exhibition of the work of one of the most interesting contemporary artists on show anywhere. This weekend tees the opening of an exhibition of four local artists. You could attend a class teaching you how to 'learn from the masters' or get more creative with paint ---- free of charge. The Centre also runs two life drawing classes for which there is a small fee. The Botanic Garden The Garden has over 8,000 plant species; it holds the research and teaching collection of living plants for Cambridge University. The multi-branchedTorch Aloe here is impressive. The African plant produces red flowers above blue-green leaves, and is not one to miss. Get to the display house to seeDionaea muscipula, a plant more commonly known as the Venus Flytrap that feeds on insects and other small animals. The Garden is also a place for wildlife-enthusiasts. Look for grass snakes in the lake. A snake called 'Hissing Sid' is regularly seen lying in the heat of the warm sun. Byron's Pool Many stories surround Lord Byron's time as a student of Cambridge University, Arriving in 1805, he wrote a letter complaining that it was a place of "mess and drunkenness". However, it seems as though Byron did manage to pass the time pleasantly enough. I'm not just talking about the pet bear he kept in his roans. He spent a great deal of time walking in the village. It is also said that on occasion Byron swam naked by moonlight in the lake, which is now known as Byron's Pool. A couple of miles past Grantchester in the south Cambridgeshire countryside, the pool is surrounded by beautiful circular paths around the fields. The cries of invisible birds make the trip a lovely experience and on the way home you can drop into the village for afternoon tea. If you don't trust me, then perhaps you’ll take it from Virginia Woolf- ----over a century after Byron, she reportedly took a trip to swim in the same pool. 1、As mentioned in the passage, there is a small charge for_____. A.attending the masters' class B.working with local artists C.learning life drawing D.seeing an exhibition 2、"Torch Aloe" and "Venus Flytrap" are_____. A.common insects B.impressive plants C.rarely-seen snakes D.wildlife-enthusiasts 3、We can infer from the passage that Byron seemed_____. A.to fear pet bears B.to like walking C.to be a heavy drinker D.to finish university in 1805 4、In the passage Byron's Pool is described as a lake_____. A.surrounded by fields B.owned by Lord Byron C.located in Grantchester D.discovered by Virginia Woolf 5、What is the passage mainly about? A.Some places for weekend break B.A way to become creative in art. C.The colourful life in the countryside. D.Unknown stories of Cambridge University. 25.(10分)Electric cars are dirty. In fact, not only are they dirty, they might even be more dirty than their gasoline-powered cousins. People in California love to talk about “zero-emissions(排放) vehicles”, but people in California seem to be clueless about where electricity comes from. Power plants mostly use fire to make it.
