I was moved to tears and started question my living ways and gave up everything that wasn’t essential: makeup and any other sort of luxury (奢侈品). I lived like they did. It was the most relaxing feeling in the world. When at Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos, we were given the task of creating a pig pen(猪圈). At firs, I thought it should be easy. After arriving at the area where the pig pen should he, we saw a hill. We were told to uproot the weeds as well as level the entire area. Looking at it we felt it would be impossible. On my own faith journey, I have felt this type of doubt before. The "hoe” , as we referred to, is a symbol of my faith journey. She was born in Baltimore, Maryland. She studies chemical engineering at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, also known as Virginia Tech. But the 22 year-old’s path to college was very different from the majority of Americans like her. In the United States,it is common for young people to complete four years of high school at age 17 or 18. After they finish high school in the spring, those who decide to attend college usually do so two-to three-months later. However, Stoke learned about a different way of doing things from an older student. That student said that before going to college, she worked for a year helping with childcare for a family in Germany. This idea appealed to Stoke very much. Stoke is in her third year of studies at Virginia Tech. She took a gap year in 2013. “It just sounded like a really great idea to have a year off to figure out more of what I wanted to do in college and after,” she said. So, after finishing high school in 2013, Stoke decided she also wanted to take a gap year before starting college. In fall 2013, Stoke connected with a family in Barcelona, Spain. They agreed to let her live with them and paid her a small amount to help care for their children for seven months. Stoke studied Spanish during her free time in Barcelona. She then used money as well as money from her parents to travel for two months. Stoke said that she felt different when she returned to the United States to begin her studies at Virginia Tech in 2014. She said she felt at ease and that she knew more about herself as a person. Also, when talking with friends who went straight to college from high school, she found many had a difficult time in their first year of college. 1、Where is Stoke unique compared with most high school students? B.Confident. C.Ambiguous. D.Regretful. 23.(8分)Time Travel If you could travel in time, where would you go? Perhaps you would watch an original performance of a Shakespeare’s play in Elizabethan England? What about hanging out with Laozi in the Spring and Autumn Period? Or maybe you'd voyage far ahead of the present day to see what the future holds. The possibility of time travel is indeed appealing. Stories exploring the subject have been around for hundreds of years. Perhaps the best known example is science fiction novel. The Time Machine, which was written by H.G. Wells and published in 1895 for the first time. It was adapted into at least two feature films of the same name, as well as two television versions, and a large number of comic book adaptations. It is generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term "time machine", coined by Wells, is now universally used to refer to a vehicle transporting people into the far future. But could time travel actually be possible? Some scientists say yes, in theory. They propose using cracks in time and space called “wormholes”, which could be used as shortcuts to other periods. Einstein’s theory of relativity allows time travel in extreme circumstances. And British physicist Stephen Hawking says you could travel into the future with a really fast spaceship going at nearly the speed of light. Though building such a spaceship would of course be no simple task. Even if you could travel into the past, there is something called the “grandfather paradox”. It asks what would happen if a time traveler were to go back in time and have his own grandfather killed for some reason, and therefore prevent himself from being born. If the time traveler wasn’t born, how would he travel back in time? And would you really like to visit the future? In H.G. Wells’ book, the main character travels into distant time where he arrives at a beach and is attacked by giant crabs. He then voyages 30 million years into the future where the only living thing is a black object with tentacles(触角). If that’s what’s in store, maybe we are better just living in the present day after all. 1、The novel The Time Machine mentioned in Paragraph 2 aims to show ______. A.the traveler is prevented from meeting his grandfather B.the grandfather’s death makes the traveler’s birth impossible C.the traveler goes back in time to seek for his grandfather D.the reunion of the traveler and his grandfather brings happiness 4、According to the passage, what is probably the author’s attitude towards time travel? A.Skeptical. B.Unclear. C.Supportive. D.Unconcerned. 24.(8分)Li Ping, a college student has been experiencing social awkwardness since her junior middle school years. Back then, she felt unease about going to the restroom alone. She even limited the amount of water she drank so she didn’t have to go there often. “I feared that other students would think that I didn’t get along well with others if I was seen alone,” she said. Li is not the only sufferer of what* s called “social anxiety”. China Youth Daily recently did a survey among 1,544 people. Nearly half (44. 6 percent) of the participants admitted that they were afraid of being the center of attention. Up to 66.7 percent of them said they are more likely to be anxious during face-to-face communications than in online conversations. But these feelings are not necessarily anything to worry about. “There is ‘social anxiety’, and there is ‘social anxiety disorder’ or ‘social phobia’. They are two completely different things.” said Li Songwei, a psychological professor at Tsinghua University. According to Thomas Rodebaugh, a psychology professor at Washington University in St Louis, US, almost everyone suffers from at least a little social anxiety. “For example, we may get it before speaking in public, or have a bad night’s sleep if there is going to be an important interview the next day. But when does social anxiety develop into a disorder? There are two simple questions you can ask yourself if you’re concerned—‘How much does the anxiety affect my life?’ and ‘Is it acceptable?’ If the condition becomes so problematic and you refuse to go out at all and cannot live a normal life, you just need to seek treatment.” he notes. But for common social anxiety, people all have their different coping strategies. “The way I employ is reason plus reward,” said Wang Li, another once-sufferer. For example, she tells herself that there is no such thing as right or wrong when pushing yourself to speak publicly: there are only people who agree with you or not. And if she conquers her fear, she buys new shoes or goes to see a movie after class. 1、The first paragraph is mainly used to . A.Some participants feel easier in online communications. B.Social anxiety is regarded as social phobia. C.Li Ping didn’t often go to the restroom because she didn’t like drinking water. D.Wang Li dealt with social anxiety only by rewarding herself. 25.(10分) I can hear the sound of insects and feel autumn is nearing.
