21.(6分) Recently, a 1935 letter in which Ernest Hemingway detailed his catch of a 500lb blue marlin(青枪鱼), an adventure that is believed to have partly inspired his novel The Old Man and the Sea, has been sold for﹩28,000 (£22,000).
The handwritten letter was sent by Hemingway on 8 May to the fishing editor of the Miami Herald, laying out in great detail how the author and his friend Henry Strater battled to keep sharks away from the marlin after catching it off the Bahamian island of Bimini.
Nate D Sanders, the auction(拍卖) company which sold the letter, said it documented for the first time in Hemingway's own words not only the size of the marlin, but also the attack by sharks, reflecting the plot of the novel.
The company added that Hemingway's account of the marlin catch differed from other anecdotes of it, one of which described Hemingway using a machine gun on the sharks, which is said to have attracted more sharks rather than frightened them away.
The Old Man and the Sea was also inspired by an anecdote told by Hemingway's Cuban friend Carlos Gutierrez. In 1936, Hemingway wrote in a magazine that Carlos had told him about an old fisherman who caught a great marlin alone.
Three years later, Hemingway told his editor Max Perkins that he was planning a short story about the old commercial fisherman who fought the swordfish all alone in his sailing boat. Instead, he ended up writing For Whom the Bell Tolls, not returning to the story about the old fisherman until January 1951. It won him the Pulitzer in 1953, and was specifically cited when he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1954.

22.(8分)There is a lot of talk about “brain power.” You don’t usually hear about stomach power. As it turns out, the stomach might also be very powerful with a new electronic pill inside it. The new electronic pill, equipped with a Wi-Fi transmitter, is swallowed and can harvest energy from inside a person’s own stomach to record core(核心)body temperature and then send the health data to an outside monitor.
The model can power itself for nearly a week—much longer than current absorbable devices, which are placed inside the body and only can share health information for less than an hour. “To make the device work even longer, and see if the stomach’s acid could power the device, we used tiny pieces of copper and zinc for experiments.” said Philip Nadeau, an electrical engineer who designed the device together.
The Wi-Fi devices fit inside a capsule but unfold when they hit the stomach and deliver drugs for long periods of time before they break down and pass through the body. This Wi-Fi pill could lead to fresh opportunities for drug delivery or real-time health monitoring from inside organs, said Giovanni Traverso, a doctor and biomedical engineer at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, who c0-led a study of the pill published recently in Nature Biomedical Engineering.
Despite our many medical advances, we’re pretty bad at measuring core body temperature. A recent study of 8,600 patients found that thermometer(温度计)readings from the mouth or skin did a lousy job of measuring core temperature. Getting an accurate temperature is important.
Traverso and Nadeau are also aiming to shrink(缩小)the pill to the size of a tablet. “Temperature tracking is just the first of many ways the medical community can use the device.” Traverse thinks.
1、What is WRONG about the Wi-Fi pill?
A.The Wi-Fi device is powered by itself.
B.The pill can send health data to the doctor.
C.Nadeau is the first one to design the pill.
D.The pill can help monitor patients’ health.
2、What does the underlined word “lousy” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Accurate. B.Unimportant.
C.Terrible. D.Traditional.
3、What is the Traverso’s attitude to the future of the Wi-Fi pill?
A.Pessimistic. B.Unconcerned.
C.Worried. D.Optimistic.
4、What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The Wi-Fi pill is too big for the patients to swallow.
B.The pill may help those with other diseases in the future.
C.Body temperature is the only one use for the Wi-Fi pill.
D.The pill has been used in many ways in medical field.
23.(8分)How many girls in this world fall behind? The answer is hard—too many to count. This is why the phrase “Go Get It Girl” popped up in my head one day. This would be my project. Thus begins the journey of my Cold Award project, the largest and most important step of Girl Scouts (女童子军).
“Go Get It Girl” is a girl’s self-empowerment (自我授权) project centered on a website called gogetitgirl.org. It focuses on areas including education, health, and financial literacy. The education section includes information on applying to college and, maintaining good grades. The health section contains information on basic health and self-respect. Lastly, the financial literacy section has all the information a girl needs to manage her money properly.
As part of my project, I was able to work one-on-one with girls in elementary, middle, and high school. I gave a speech at a local high school’s College Night. I spoke to Hispanic girls and their parents about applying to college. In addition, I worked with an organization called Cool Girls, Inc. Cool Girls is an organization focused on the advancement of girls in all aspects of their development. I worked at the afterschool program, Cool Girls Club. The girls I worked with were primarily minorities, and Cool Girls truly helps them to rise above any current difficulties in their lives.
To provide inspiration for the girls who visit gogetitgirl.org, I interviewed successful women in my community, including a doctor and business owner.
The project has been a lot of work, arid it’s not over yet. It will never be over, hopefully, because I will always look for ways to help girls.

24.(8分)JOHANNESBURG—They say cats have nine lives. Now a Chinese toad(蟾蜍)has joined that club of clever survivors.
South Africans are shocked at the endurance of a toad that got trapped in a cargo shipment from China to Cape Town, after jumping into a porcelain(瓷器) candlestick(烛台) that was made there. South African officials reportedly planned to put down the creature, fearing it would cause harm as an invasive species if it were let go in the wild.
But the toad got a last-minute pardon. Mango Airlines, a South African airline, transported the toad on Friday to Johannesburg for delivery to an animal shelter, after officials decided to find a way to let the toad live. The two-hour fight was a breeze compared to the trip from China, a long way of many weeks and thousands of kilometers across the Indian Ocean.
Airline spokesman Hein Kaiser said the toad got “first-class treatment”, sitting in a transparent plastic container with escort Brett Glasby, an animal welfare inspector. There was even a ceremony, in which the toad’s boarding pass was handed to Glasby.
“He was the star of the show on the flight,” Kaiser said of the amphibious(两栖的) passenger. “I think every passenger stopped to have a look.”
On landing in Johannesburg, the toad was brought out of its container for a celebrity-style photo shoot. Observers said the brown toad seemed like a cool customer. It belongs to the Asian Toad species, which breeds during the monsoon(季风) season. It is believed to have survived the trip from China by hardening its skin to prevent it from drying out, and also by slowing its breathing and heart rate—methods that help the species survive in times of drought.
“We’ve had snakes in imported timber and scorpions(蝎子) in fruit. We were called because the toad was right inside the candlestick, and we had to break it to get it out” Glasby, the inspector, told The Star, a South African newspaper.

25.(10分)Frank Lloyd Wright was the champion of organic architecture, a style of building meant to harmonize with nature. But I’m not sure harmonizing with chipmunks — small American animals similar to squirrels with black lines on their fur — was what he had in mind.
During my years with the US National Park Service, I spent six months working in a visitor center designed by Wright’s firm. Several other employees and I staffed the park’s phone and radio system from a room in the basement.
I was sitting at my desk when I first heard a sound in the suspended ceiling. Dark shapes moved fast across the light panel(光板) above my head. Moments later, they ran back in the opposite direction, leaving me with an impression of noses and tails, each tail followed by another nose. It was like watching a shadow puppet(皮影) performance, but with real animals.
“Baby chipmunks,” a fellow told me. “They live in the ceiling.”
After four summers working in the parks, I had grown accustomed to sharing indoor space with wildlife. Chipmunks in the workplace even s
