六、阅读理解
When I was little, I was really little. But my dream was big. I dreamed of being a basketball
player. I tried a few teams, but they all said no.
As I got older, I did grow a little bigger, but not a lot. On my 12th birthday, I decided to try a
new sport: running. I told Grandpa. “I’m going to be a runner.” “Dave,” Grandpa replied kindly,
“
if you can’t be big, you can do something big.”
I ran 12 miles(英里)on my 12th birthday. On my 13th birthday, I did it again, but I added
one more mile. On my 14th birthday, I ran, 14 miles. 15 on my 15th, 16 on my 16th, and you
guessed it —17 miles on my 17th birthday.
All this running brought another big dream. That is, someday, I would run the marathon(马
拉松). I told Grandpa about my dream.
“
But, Dave, you haven’t trained for the marathon. Are you sure you’re ready?”Grandpa asked.
But he still told me that he would walk over to see me and cheer me on.
I ran fast that day, but I fell at Mile 18 and was driven to the hospital. Later that night, I
called Grandpa and told him I failed.
“
“
“
No,” he said patiently, “you didn’t fail. You got something.”
I did?” I asked.
Yes, you found that big dreams don’t just come true easily. They take work. If you train and
work even harder, I will wait for you next year and cheer you on.”
I trained every day, running miles and miles more. Sadly, Grandpa died just two months

before the marathon. He wouldn’t be waiting for me, but I wanted to run for him.
That day, I ran fast. “Keep going! You can do it!” His words gave me energy when I tried my
best to make each difficult mile. As I crossed the finish line, I threw my arms in the air and cried,
“
Grandpa, we did it!”

Scientists have found that plants can make sounds.
A scientist Lily Hadany and her team recorded(录制) tomato plants at different times. It
②
showed that the plants made ultrasonic(超声波)sounds. Humans could only hear them with the
help of a computer. They were noises like clicking(咔哒声)sounds.
试卷第 6页,共 11页
③As the scientists studied the sounds, they began to find some interesting facts. Plants made
different sounds at different times. They hardly clicked when they had enough water, but as the
earth got drier, they clicked more and more. Scientists also found that plants made sounds when
they got hurt. When scientists cut off a leaf from the plants, the plants also clicked more. But the
clicking wasn’t the same as when the plants needed water.
④Some scientists trained a computer AI system to identify the different kinds of clicking
sounds. It was able to find the difference between plants that needed water and plants with cuts. It
means that one day we may be able to use these sounds to figure out when it is in difficult time,
and what problem it is having. That could be very helpful to farmers.
⑤The team’s finding changes our ideas about plants. As Dr. Hadany says, “Even in a quiet
field, there are sounds made by plants, and those sounds carry information and may help us a lot.”

Water can run away in interesting ways. Let’s try to get water from one cup into another.
What you
need
•An empty glass
•A glass with blue water
•Some paper towels
•A glass with red water
Step 1Prepare “paper bridges”. Use paper towels to make two of them. They
will take in and carry away water.
Step 2Take one paper towel. Put one end of it into the glass of blue water
What you do and the other end into the empty glass.
Take the other paper towel and do the same thing to the glass of red water
and the empty glass.
Step 3Watch what is going on. This experiment takes some patience.
Your paper towels start getting wet and after some time you will find that the
empty glass is starting to have water, just like the picture(→)shows.
What you
see
Interestingly, if red and blue go together, it becomes purple. So, you will see
three colors now.
The empty glass keeps getting water. In the end, there will be the same
quantity of water in each glass.
When the paper towels touch water, there is a kind of power between water
What
and the towel, so water goes to the paper towel and then runs away.
example, water travels from the roots to the rest of the tree.
