Planet Earth would be a scary place for humans if dinosaurs still ruled the world. Though there are still some traces of life from the Jurassic Period, the Age of Dinosaurs ended more than 65 million years ago.
This mass extinction is believed to be the result of an asteroid(小行星) hitting Earth. A new report by the journal Biological Reviews called “The Extinction of Dinosaurs” concludes that this impact was, indeed, the cause of the dinosaurs’ demise. But the space blast(爆炸) wasn’t the only reason these creatures aren’t still around today.
Dinosaurs need food to survive. Meat-eating monsters like the Tyrannosaurus Rex（霸王龙） were at the top of the food chain, and fed off plant eaters like the horned Triceratops(三角恐龙). These herbivores(食草动物) were decreasing in population after the asteroid hit Earth, which left the meat-eating species less food to survive on. “In any ecosystem where you remove links to key species, that community has problems,” Richard Butler, one of the review’s authors, told National Geographic.
While the herbivore population was going down, Earth’s temperatures were rising when volcanoes erupted. Hot vapors and gas began wiping out some of the dinosaur population and weakening the survivors.
These changes made the asteroid’s impact especially powerful. It caused more volcanoes to erupt, heated up Earth's atmosphere, and led to a sharp drop in the level of oxygen in the oceans.
With the dinosaurs gone, mammals (哺乳动物) began to evolve into bigger and more diverse species. Many animals we see today, like birds, sharks, and even some cats and dogs, appeared after the asteroid hit Earth. But none rule Earth quite like the dinosaurs did.

A two-day water ban in parts of Ohio and Michigan has been lifted.
Imagine being told not to drink, shower, or brush your teeth with tap water. That’s what happened to residents of Toledo, Ohio, and parts of Michigan over the weekend after tap water coming from Lake Erie was found to be unsafe. Hundreds of thousands of people were affected.
The water ban began on Saturday. As a temporary solution, bottled water was trucked into the area and the
Ohio National Guard was purifying water for residents. But by Monday morning, the ban had been lifted.
“Our water is safe,” said Toledo mayor, D. Michael Collins. “Families can return to normal life.” To reassure(使放心) people, he took a sip from a glass of the city’s tap water.
Toledo is Ohio’s fourth largest city. News about the water ban came after tests at one water-treatment
plant showed high levels of the microcystin (微囊藻素) caused by algae(海藻). Following the warning, Ohio governor John Kasich declared a state of emergency.
Drinking the contaminated water could cause people to feel uncomfortable. Health officials said that children and those with weak immune systems should not shower or bathe in the water.
To try to solve the problem, city officials added carbon and chlorine(氯) to the water. Test results on Sunday showed that the toxins(毒素) had probably reached a safe level. It wasn’t until Monday that the mayor announced that six new water samples had come back clean and safe to drink.
Tap water accounts for two- thirds of the drinking water consumed in homes across the U.S., according to a study released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture three years ago. Officials test the quality of the water to make sure it is healthy for people to drink.

together and figure out how to address the algae problem in Lake Erie.

What’s the basic story line?
For his entire life, 12-year- old Adam has spent summers at his grandma’s cabin in Minnesota. But this year things are different. His parents have divorced. On top of that, Adam’s cousins won’t be vacationing at the cabin with him. Also, Grandma seems to be acting differently. At first, she’s just a bit more forgetful than usual. But after spending more time with her, Adam realizes Grandma is “slipping.”
There are new neighbors at the cabin this summer, including a girl at Adam’s age named Alice. At first, Adam isn’t interested in spending time with her. But as time goes by, their friendship flourishes(繁荣). Throughout this unusual summer, Adam searches for hidden treasure with his new friend and begins to uncover family secrets as well.
Are the characters believable?
The characters are believable because they don’t have cookie-cutter(千篇一律的) personalities. Adam is quiet and shy and finds girls difficult to understand. Alice is adventurous and unlike any girl he has ever met. Readers will likely see aspects of their personalities in the characters and recognize their friendship too.
Who would like this book?
Anyone who appreciates memories of family vacations or summertime in general will enjoy the vivid imagination that fills Three Bird Summer. Readers will fall into the story, almost as if they’re actually spending the summer exploring Three Bird Lake with Adam and Alice.

Goedeker’s loves to see happy customers, so every year we host a drawing in January and July, and one lucky person receives an iPad Mini. Goedeker’s customers can enter the drawing through a variety of ways, such as submitting product or customer reviews.
When I contacted July's drawing winner, I couldn't believe the inspiring story behind her efforts.
Sari Bailey entered the drawing in the hope of winning an iPad Mini for her blind granddaughter, Aubrey. Aubrey, a soon-to-be 4-year-old, was born with a rare condition called septo-optic dysplasia. The condition, also known as De Morsier’s syndrome, happens when the optic nerves（视神经）do not develop fully in the fetal state.
Aubrey once had an iPad Mini, given to her by the Gia Nicole Angel Foundation, which provides an iPad Mini to the blind once a year. However, it was stolen, and her family did not know how they could replace it. The iPad was essential to Aubrey's development, as she uses it for intensive therapy( 强化治疗). Each week, Aubrey works through an hour of occupational, physical, and speech therapy.
While Aubrey struggles with her sight, she loves music and plays the piano and sings fairly well for a three-year-old! As one can imagine, the iPad plays a huge role in this. She also finished her first year of school in May.
Sari says, "We are very happy for her progress. We like to have as many tools for learning as possible available to Aubrey, thus, I quest for the winning of the iPad Mini! She is a very special little girl and I love her dearly."
