An example of one of the Monkees’ song can encourage students to get some ideas of this group. Step 2 Read the passage quickly and get the main idea of the passage. It is an introduction to Western popular music. The Monkees was a very popular band in Europe and the USA at a time when China was experiencing the Cultural Revolution. It introduces the development of the Monkees. Read the passage again and look for the main idea of each paragraph. Analyse the structure of the passage. 1 Many people want to be famous as singers or musicians 2 How most bands start. 3 The Monkees started in a different way. 4 How the Monkees became popular and how they developed as a real band. Step 3 Read the passage for more detailed information. 1 They produced a new record in 1996 2 Most musicians get together and 3 They put an advertisement in the newspaper looking for four rock musicians, 4 The first TV show 5 However, the band broke up about 1970, A but only one person was accepted. B but reunited in the mid-1980s. C form a band because they like to write and play music. D to celebrate their time as a band. E was a big hit. Step 4 Open exercise. Students discuss what they think of the Monkees. There is no correct answer and many possible combinations of adjectives are possible. The important thing is to encourage students to examine all the alternatives offered and accept or reject with a reason. Using the adjectives you have chosen to sum up your ideas. The adjectives are: Popular lively funny foolish attractive brave intelligent bright crazy noisy classical humorous honest famous smart determined For example: They were entertainers after all. It’s fine to be funny and crazy. They were more popular than the Beatles at one time so they must have been very famous and rich, I suppose. We think the Monkees were popular, lively, noisy, attractive, funny, crazy and rich. Step 5 In groups, discuss the following questions: 1 Do you think the TV organizers were right to call the Monkees a band when they did not write or sing their own songs? Give reasons. 2 In your opinion, what is the most important thing for a successful band? Why? The exercise extends the understanding of the students by asking them for their personal opinions. If the students understand the ideas in the passage they will have no difficulty in finding a suitable answer. Planning of the blackboard: Unit 5 Music Do you know anything about the Monkees?
