Ask some students to read their descriptions and let others guess whom they are writing about. For example: He is not hard-working. But he is good at playing basketball. He is better at math than Chinese. Who is he? Step II Reading T: In the last period, we listened to a conversation between Scott and his mother. They talked about his report card. Today we will read a boy, Alan’s letter to his grandmother. After reading it, you are supposed to find his report card in activity 2b on page 29. Now open your book and turn to page 30. Read the letter (skim). After reading. T: Can you tell me what the letter is about? S: In this passage, Alan told his grandmother what his teachers said about his study. T: Do you agree? Ss: Yes. T: Good. Now read the passage (scan) and underline the sentences that talk about his study. Sentences: She said I was lazy ... My history teacher said I could do better. ... my math teacher said I was hard-working. And my Spanish teacher said my listening was good. T: Can you find his report card in activity 2b according to these sentences? What’s your answer? ... Then let students pick out the words in the passage that describe feelings. They are: get nervous, surprised, luckily, difficult, disappointing Language tips: lucky adj. having good luck (adv.) luckily (opposite) unlucky Luckily the museum was not damaged by the earthquake. Luckily I caught the last bus. disappointing not as good as you hoped or expected a disappointing novel The weather this summer is disappointing. Step III Writing In this step, students will practice writing a passage about report card in a form of letter. T: Now suppose you are Scott. Use the information from activity 2b to write a letter to a relative or a friend about your report card. Ask the students to say something they might write about. Remind them to use words that can describe feelings. Useful structures or expressions: get nervous have a hard time with ... be surprised to ... disappointing result The good news is ... After they finish, ask some students to read their letters. Make sure they use proper reported speech. Correct the mistakes in their letters. Sample letter: Dear Jane, I got my report card today. Before I saw the envelope from school, I was very nervous. This semester I did much work in Spanish, and I am very happy that my Spanish teacher said I was good at speaking. Another good news is that my math teacher said I was hard-working. But my history teacher said I could do better. I really had a hard time with science. My science teacher said I was lazy. I’m very disappointed to see that. I have to try harder at it. That’s all I have for you. Show my love! Yours, Scott Step IV Pairwork This activity provides guided oral practice using the target language. Ask the students to read the instructions. Then let two students read the sample dialogue. T: Imagine your teachers are writing your report card. Please write what they would say. Then make a dialogue with your partner. A sample conversation: A: What did your report say? B: Well, my math teacher said that I was not hard-working. A: Really? What did your history teacher say? B: Ah, she said that I could do better in my study. A: Oh, What about your English teacher? B: He said I was better at listening than reading. A: You are lucky. My English teacher said I was very lazy. Step V Homework Ask the students to finish the writing task in activity 3c. They are supposed to use reported speech and the expressions they learned in this period in their letters. This is another writing practice with the target language. 课后反思:
