School Lunchtime in China and the West
A. What do you eat for lunch during the school term? In Western countries, school lunches are very different from those eaten in Asian countries, and we have different customs at lunch time as well. In Western countries, most school students take their lunch to school in a lunch box. The lunch box usually contains sandwiches (三明治) or filled rolls, fruit and something sweet such as a muffin, biscuit or piece of cake.
B. Sandwiches contain all sorts of ingredients, including meats like ham, chicken and roast beef, or spreads like peanut butter (花生酱), jam and honey. Salad sandwiches or filled rolls contain meat, cheese, eggs and raw vegetables. The ingredients vary depending on the likes and dislikes of the students.
C. Some students buy their lunch from the school shop, which is usually called a canteen or tuck shop. Lunches sold at the school canteen range from meat pies, pizzas (比萨), sausage rolls (香肠卷) and hot dogs (热狗) to potato chips, cookies, doughnuts (油炸圈饼) and soft drinks. Some Western countries are trying to persuade school canteens to sell only healthy food to students, but their efforts have not been very successful so far.
D. Most children in Western schools sit outside to eat their lunch. They sit on the grass, on the concrete playground or on long seats in front of the classrooms. On wet days, they find shelter anywhere they can. In some Western schools, students have lunch in a dining room. This is most common for students who live at the school. These dining room lunches are sometimes similar to the food taken in lunch boxes. At other schools, the dining room always serves a cooked lunch. The food in a cooked lunch is similar to a typical Western evening meal and might include spaghetti (意大利面条) and meatballs, roast chicken, sausages, pizza or a casserole (砂锅菜). These lunches may even include dessert!
E. The lunch break is not very long in most Western schools – usually about 45 minutes to one hour in length. This doesn’t give the students much time to eat and play or rest, so many students have a small lunch to give themselves more free time for playing sports, talking to friends or completing homework. Children in Western countries finish their school day much earlier than Chinese students do.
F. It is very unusual for students in Western schools to go home for lunch. Perhaps the teachers think they might not come back!

Passage A
A lift is wonderful. It is really only a small room. Rooms usually stay in one place. Lifts travel up and down all day long. Sometimes a worker stands in the lift. He or she operates (控制) in up and down. In modern lifts there is no worker. The people walk in. They know what floor they want. They push a button (按钮) and the lift goes to that floor. It is all very fast and easy.
Lifts are very important to us. Why? Think about a tall building. Maybe it has twenty floors . Maybe it has fifty or more. Who can walk up all the stairs? Maybe people can climb them one time. Can someone climb thirty floors to an office every day? Can small children walk up to their room on the twenty-fourth floor? Can their mother and father carry food up all those stairs? Of course not.
We can have high buildings because we have lifts. We could not have all the beautiful tall buildings in the world without lifts. They are really wonderful.
