Now we will come to the Island Ring Road. This road is on the southeast shore of Xiamen Island. It starts from Yanwu and ends in Dunshang, with 6 lanes in two directions. The green belt on this road is 80 to 100 meters wide, it can offers local people an ideal weekend getaway.
Actually,this road was built by government in 1991, the whole construction took about 10 years. By the end of 1999, the Island Ring Road had been well equipped with various facilities, from the Hulishan Fortress to the Xiamen International Conference and Exhibition Center. From here, you can see the view of Xiamen Bay, and the theme sculptures exhibited along the road. In fact, the road is a delicate balance of natural beauty, humanity, and the spirit of sports.

First Part—from Yanwu bridge to Hulishan Fortress
This road has been divided into 5 parts, on our right is the first part  from Yanwu to Hulishan. This part is called the “S shape” section, because it consist of an S—shaped bridge. This bridge is 3 kilometers long and just 1 to 2 meters above the ocean. Chinese regard the dragon as China’s auspicious animal, so locals have nicknamed it the”flowing dragon on the sea”. This dragon is very beautiful when night descends upon the city. Because there is not lampposts(lampshade; alley lamp) are set on this bridge. The lights are hidden within the low bridge railings. Thus when night comes, the bridge looks like a silver belt.
Pay attention, please. There is an music sculpture on this section.
This piece of music sculpture is from the song of Gulangyu and was first built in 1998. These sculpture notes stretch for 247 meters。 In 2001, it was regarded as the longest music sculpture in the world.
Do you know Xiamen University? Its back gate is on the Island Ring Road. It is a national key university founded by overseas Chinese Mr Chen Jiageng. Later I will say more about it. This school’s students can go to the beach and ocean to enjoy the natural beauty during their leisure time.

The Second Part—from Hulishan Fortress to Taiwan Folk Village
The second section stretches between Hulishan Fortress and the Taiwan Folk Village. Along this way to the Taiwan folk village, you can enjoy some statues . On the grassy area is a series of egret statues. They are called the meditation for the ocean. These statues of egrets suggest the sculptor’s longing for their hometown of Xiamen. Later, we may encounter a sculpture of 12 oars. Through the image of oars, the local people express their wishes for reunion of the mainland and Taiwan.
A few minutes’ drive will bring us to the calligraphers’ square. This square is a special place for those who love the traditional Chinese calligraphy .
In addition to these pleasing sceneries, I have said that the Island Ring Road is also well equipped with various facilities and entertainment centers for people to enjoy their holiday.The Sun Bay, just before us, is an ideal place for having parties with friends, or family. In the Sun Bay, we can play in the sand, go swimming, surf in the sea, or have a suntan on the beach.
Moreover, we can eat the fresh seafood.
Now we have come to the Taiwan Folk Village. The Taiwan Village was built by Mr Huang Jinshan, it presents tourists a vivid picture of life in Taiwan.

The Third Part– From Taiwan Folk Village to Haiyun Tai
Ok, now our bus will take us to the third part of the Island Ring Road, from Taiwan Folk Village to Haiyun Tai. There are a lot of ocean—themed statues along the way, such as the Love of Waves .It resembles a key, right? When you observe it closely,  you will figure out it is made of two numbers: nine and eight. It means September 8th or the ninth month and eight day, in this day a lot of friends from all over the world will come to Xiamen for the China International Fair for Investment and Trade.Xiamen welcomes friends to open Chinese market.

The Fourth Part—From Haiyun Tai to Yefeng Zhai
From Haiyun Tai, we head to the fourth part of the island ring road, Yefeng Zhai. The huge slogan on the frame says, “one Country, Two systems”. Before the slogan there is a statue of three hands, a small hand, a strong hand and a hand wrinkled with age, They are grasping one another tightly, and are facing Taiwan Island.This expresses our hopes for peaceful reunion. Please notice the statues of runners on the grass. They were built to commemorate our International Marathon Games.
In Xiamen, the first International Marathon Games was held on the Island Ring Road on March 20th 2003. It is sponsored by the Chinese Athletic Association and xiamen Municipal Government.
It was said that this road is the most beautiful seaside marathon course in the world, and Xiamen Marathon is an enjoyable and attractive experience for participants , no matter whether will win or not, so this road has become increasing popular among Marathon enthusiasts all over the world. In 2004, in order to further promote the popularity of Xiamen International Marathon, the Xiamen government set up a series sculptures of Marathon runners and cheerful crowds. Look out the window and you will see these vivid sculptures on our left. International Conference and Exhibition Center . Our last stop on the Island Ring Road will be the International Conference and Exhibition Center
The International Conference and Exhibition Center is located along the beach, directly facing the ocean. It resembles a huge ship about to sail.
Now it is one of Xiamen’s major landmarks. The building covers 470,000 square meters, the total investment is about 1.4 billion Yuan. The major building is the conference center, of course, there are  also a lot of support buildings, such as the four—star hotel and the underground park. The major building, the conference center is 432 meters long and 42.6 meters high. It is a five—floor building and can accommodate about 10,000 people.
The grassland around the conference center is an ideal place for citizens to fly kites. During weekends, when the sky is clear, the citizens will pass their weekends here. They can fly kites, or enjoy the beach, sunshine and the ocean. Every year, this conference center welcomes people from all over the world for at least two pageants. One is the China International Fair for Investment and Trade. The other is the International Marathon Games.
