Book 7 The Complete Works of Dale Carnegie Introduction During the first thirty-five years of the twentieth century, the publishing houses of America printed more than a fifth of a million different books. Most of them were deadly dull, and many were financial failures. ''Many," did I say? The president of one of the largest publishing houses in the world confessed to me that his company, after seventy-five years of publishing experience, still lost money on seven out of every eight books it published. Why then did I have the temerity to write another book? And, after I had written it, why should you bother to read it? Fair questions, both; and I will try to answer them. I have, since1912, been conducting educational courses for business and professional men and women in New York. At first, I conducted courses in public speaking only-courses designed to train adults, by actual experience, to think on their feet and express their ideas with more clarity, more effectiveness and more poise, both in business interviews and before groups. But gradually, as the seasons passed, I realized that as sorely as these adults needed training in effective speaking, they needed still more training in the fine art of getting along with people in everyday business and social contacts. I also gradually realized that I was sorely in need of such training myself. As I look back across the years, I am appalled at my own frequent lack of fitness and understanding. How I wish a book such as this had been placed in my hands twenty years ago ! What a priceless boon it would have been. Dealing with people is probably the biggest problem you face, especially if you are in business. Yes, and that is also true if you are a housewife, architect or engineer. Reach done a few years ago under the auspices of the CARNEGIE Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching uncovered a most important and significant fact-a fact later confirmed by additional studies made at the Carnegie Institute of Technology. These investigations revealed that even in such technically lines as engineering, about 15 percent is due to skill in human engineering--to personality and the ability to lead people. For many years, I conducted courses each season at the Engineers' Club of Philadelphia, and also courses for the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. A total of probably more than fifteen hundred engineers have passed through my classes. They came to me because they had finally realized, after years of observation and experience, that the highest-paid personnel in engineering are frequently not those who know the most about engineering. One can for example, hire mere technical ability in engineering, accountancy, architecture or any other profession at nominal salaries. But the person who has technical knowledge plus the ability to express ideas ,to assume leadership ,and to arouse enthusiasm among people ---that person is headed for higher earning power. In the heyday of his activity, john D Rockefeller said that "ability to deal with people is as purchasable a commodity as sugar or coffee. And I will pay more for that ability," said john D, "than for any other under the sun." Wouldn't you suppose that every college in the land would conduct courses to develop the highest-priced ability under the sun? But if there is just one practical ,common--sense course of that kind given for adults in even one college in the land ,it has escaped my attention up to the present writing. Those powers which you habitually fail to use! The sole purpose of this book--if you aren't then a little better equipped to meet life's situations, then I shall consider this book to be a total failure so far as you are concerned. For "the great aim of education," said Herbert Spencer, '"is not knowledge but action.' And this is an action book. Book 8 How to Win Friends & Influence People Author: Dale Breckenridge Carnegie (November 24,1888-November 1,1955) Representative books: Public Speaking for Success , Five Minute Biographies , How to Stop Worrying and Start Living The main content: How to Win Friends and Influence People is one of the first bestselling self-help books ever published. Written by Dale Carnegie and first published in 1936, it has sold 15 million copies world-wide. Leon Shimkin of the publishing firm Simon & Schuster took one of the 14-week courses given by Carnegie in 1934. Shimkin persuaded Carnegie to let a stenographer take notes from the course to be revised for publication. In 1981, a new revised edition with updated language and anecdotes was released. The revised edition reduced the number of sections from 6 to 4, eliminating sections on effective business letters and improving marital satisfaction. Book 9 The Princess Dairies Author: Meg Cabot Meg Cabot (born on February 1, 1967 in Bloomington, Indiana, United States) is an American author of romantic and paranormal fiction for teens and adults and used to write under several pen names, but now writes exclusively under her real name, Meg Cabot. She has written and published over fifty books, and is best known for The Princess Diaries, later made by Walt Disney Pictures into two feature films of the same name. Content The story of Mia Thermopolis's adolescent turmoil as an average teenager, and a princess of royal descent and chronicled in her ongoing journal, where she explores topics of teenage angst, love and betrayal through a very opinionated eye. Book 10 THE DEVIL WERRS PRADA Author: Lauren Weisberger (born March 28, 1977) is an American novelist and author of the 2003 bestseller The Devil Wears Prada, a speculated roman à clef of her real life experience as a put-upon assistant to Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. Book 11 Who moved my cheese Writer: Spencer Johnson M.D Introduction: Little friends in a maze find and enjoy some cheese, but when that cheese is gone, only Sniff and Scurry adapt and go searching for more ,while Hem and Haw wait for more cheese to appear. Book 12 Three Cups of Tea Author: Greg Mortenson (Born December 27, 1957 (age 53) St. Cloud, Minnesota, United States Brief introduction: In 1993, mountaineer Greg Mortenson attempted to climb K2, the world's second highest mountain and located in the Karakoram range of northern Pakistan-administered Kashmir, as a way of honoring the memory of his deceased sister, Christa. As a memorial, he had planned to lay her amber necklace on the summit of K2. After more than 70 days on the mountain, Mortenson and three other climbers had their ascent interrupted by the need to complete a 75-hour life-saving rescue of a fifth climber. After getting lost during his descent, alone, he became weak and exhausted. Instead of arriving in Askole, where his porters awaited, he came across Korphe, a small village built on a shelf jutting out from a canyon. He was greeted and taken in by the chief elder, Haji Ali of Korphe. To repay the remote community for their hospitality, Mortenson recounted in the book that he promised to build a school for the village. After difficulties in raising capital, Mortenson was introduced to Jean Hoerni, a Silicon Valley pioneer who donated the money that Mortenson needed for his school. In the last months of his life, Hoerni co-founded the Central Asia Institute, endowing the CAI to build schools in rural Pakistan and Afghanistan. According to the book, Mortenson faced many daunting challenges in his quest to raise funds for the building of more than 55 schools in Taliban territory. Some of these challenges included death threats from Islamic mullahs, long periods of separation from his family, and being kidnapped by Taliban sympathizers. Reflecting on the state of a post-9/11 world, Mortenson advocates in his books and during his speaking engagements that extremism in the region can be deterred through collaborative efforts to alleviate poverty and improve access to education, especially for girls. Formerly in Afghanistan and Pakistan, schooling focused on boys. Because educated boys tend to
