An official dance party is held about twice a year in high schools in the United States. When the final football game is over for the season there is a homecoming party. Sometimes, students select a king from among the football players, and a queen from among the girls. Every student can attend and have fun with the help of their teachers. Sometimes, to the surprise of everyone, students, who devote all their time to study, come to the party in a beautiful dress. The most exciting party that students can go to would have to be a prom(毕业舞会). Students attend it in dresses similar to those of Hollywood stars and the atmosphere is comparable to an Oscar Award party. Since such a party is for seniors, students usually stay up the night trying to enjoy their last year in high school. In American schools, instead of the teachers going to different rooms, students have their own class schedules and go to different classrooms. When a student is away from school, they must have an explanation for being away along with the signature(签名) of a parent. The signed paper is then handed in to the school office. American students also enjoy a number of activities out of school like cheerleading(拉拉队), student government and a host of different sports. 4.Whose presence at the homecoming party can make others amazed? A.The king and the queen acted by students. B.The laziest student in study. C.The teacher who offers advice. D.Students who study hardest. 5.Why do students hold the prom till the next morning? A.Because they would like to dance and sang madly. B.Because this is the only chance that they get dressed like film stars. C.Because students make it as exciting as an awarding party of Oscar. D.Because this perhaps is the last chance that they can enjoy their school life. 6.According to the passage, American students in school ________. A.study in the same classroom B.have the same class with each other C.attend different classes in different places D.wait for their teachers in their class 7.What is this passage mainly about? A.The organizing of dance parties. B.Homecoming party. C.How to ask for a leave. D.School life in America. C It was my first day at school in London and I was half-excited and half-frightened. On my way to school I wondered, what questions the other boys would ask me and practiced all the answers: “I am nine years old. I was born here but I haven’t lived here since I was two. I was living in Farley. It’s about thirty miles away. I came back to London two months ago.” I also wondered if it was the rule for boys to fight strangers like me, but I was tall for my age. I hoped they would decide not to risk it. No one took any notice of me before school. I stood in the center of the playground, expecting someone to say “hello”, but no one spoke to me. My teacher was called Mr. Jones. There were 42 boys in the class, so I didn’t stand out there, either, until the first lesson of the afternoon. Mr. Jones was very fond of Charles Dickens, so he asked several boys if they knew Dickens’ birthplace, but no one guessed right. A boy called Brian, the biggest in the class, said: “Timbuktu” and Mr. Jones went red in the face. Then he asked me. I said: ”Portsmouth” and everyone stared at me because Mr. Jones said I was right. This didn’t make me very popular, of course. “He thinks he’s clever,” I heard Brian say. After that, we went out to the playground to play football. I was in Brian’s team, and he obviously had Dickens in mind because he told me to go in goal. No one ever wanted to be the goalkeeper. “He’s big enough and useless enough,” Brian said when someone asked him why he had chosen me. As the boy kicked the ball hard along the ground to my right, I threw myself down quickly and saved it. All my team crowded round me. My bare knees were grazed and bleeding. Brian took out a handkerchief and offered it to me. “Do you want to join my team?” he said. At the end of the day, I was no longer a stranger. 8.The writer prepared to answer all of the following questions EXCEPT “________”. A.How old are you? B.Where are you from? C.Do you want to join my team? D.When did you come back to London? 9.We can learn from the passage that ________. A.boys were usually unfriendly to new students B.the writer was not greeted as he expected C.Brian praised the writer for his cleverness D.the writer was glad to be a goalkeeper 10.The underlined part “I didn’t stand out” in paragraph 3 means that the writer was not ___. A.noticeable B.nervous C.important D.surprised 11.The writer was offered a handkerchief because ________. A.he was in Brian’s team B.he was no longer a new comer C.he was beginning to be accepted D.he pushed a player on the other team D After graduating from Ontario College of Teachers, I became a teacher at a one-room country school in Aldborough Township. That first day of school as a 19-year-old female teacher was a frightening experience. It was one thing to have graduated as a successful student; it was another thing to face a classroom of little faces that were waiting for the “new teacher.” I had a classroom of 21 children of different shapes and sizes. The youngest was five going on six and the eldest was 16. There were two doors for entrance in my school, one for the girls, one for the boys and just inside each door was a chemical toilet—no outdoor facilities for us! The heat in the building was a wood-burning furnace(火炉) down in the basement. Tending the furnace was one of my responsibilities. Luckily, I knew a bit about starting a fire, so the school didn’t burn down. What I found most difficult was that a parent might take a child out of school for any reason. I had one Dutch family, whose father would keep the children out of school to help with the farm work. Finally, I got tired of this and sent an education officer to solve the problem. Needless to say, I was very unpopular with that father from then on, but the children came to school much more regularly! In the classroom, the older students helped the younger ones with learning, as well as with putting on coats and hats. If someone’s lunch was forgotten, everyone shared a bit of their food. We were a family. We had good times and bad times, but we kept learning. Far beyond maths, social studies, reading, grammar and writing, we learned how to get along with each other. I loved teaching at this small school and knew I was teaching the children about life as much as about subjects. I’d like to believe some students will have an influence on the world that will last long after I am gone. 12.Why did the author feel her first day as a teacher frightening? A.So many students were in class. B.The situations were quite different. C.No outdoor facilities were provided. D.The students were curious about her. 13.What do we know about the school? A.It was poorly equipped. B.The playground was large. C.It was once damaged by a fire. D.The students were of similar age. 14.What was a headache for the author? A.A Dutch family hated her. B.The students preferred farm work. C.The education officer offered little help. D.Some parents ignored children’s education. 15.What can be inferred from Paragraph 5? A.They cared about each other. B.They had an influence on the world. C.They laughed away bad times. D.They did well in almost every subject. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 School doesn’t have to be a prison.
