2008-09-13 09:01 The author used the Araby to describe the differences occurred in the boy’s minds. He centered on Araby, then emphasized on many characteristis or quality of the boy at that age. It can be divided into three parts, not only the time but also the changes of the boy’s thinking. Firstly, before the boy came to Araby, he didn’t know what would happen, he just the one who in that age, was full of blindness, innocence, simplicity. “every morning I lay on the floor in the front parior watching her door.” Mangan’s sister gave him a good impression, he thought that was a kind of love, a sense that made his blood foolish. but blood couldn’t be foolish, so it was his mind, behavor that made him seem to be unwise. “her image accompanied me even in places the most hostile to romance.” This was also the characteristics of that age’s boy. He thought little of the future, but only the fellings at that time. He was a little shy when Mangan’s sister spoke to him.he was confused and didn’t know how the first words came out. That was comman when a boy of that age was in front of the one who impressed them well, especilly when they thought there was love between them. “I had hardly any patience with the serious work of life which, now that it stood between me and my desire, seemed to me chlid’s play, urgly monotonous child’s play.” He expressed his fellings in the way a man did but not a child. When he promised Mangan’s sister to bring something to her, he took this as a duty, so he thought himself as a man who could take responsibility. Then he found work a child’s play, urgly. it seemed that he wasn’t a child but a man. That was also a point. He would go to Araby for his promise. so he would do his best to achieve it. When his uncle forgot his request, he was unhappy until some pennies were given. Secondly, when he came to Araby, he should have been so excited but when he found nearly all stalls were closed and the greater part of the hall was in darkness, he recognized a silence like that which pervades a church after a servie. And he walked into the center of the bazaar timidly but not excitedly. That was because he of that age was also afraid of darkness. This kind of fear made him remember difficultly the reason he came there. It was the curiousity and a sense of guess let him listened to the conversation between the young lady and two young gentlemen. “she seemed to have spoken to me out of a sense of duty.” He found something about the reality in the life. Then it came to the thrid part. He allowed the two pennies to fall against the sixpence in his pocket. Maybe we can say he allowed two minds compete with each other. Then he heard a voice came from the end of gallery that the light was out. One of the mind won. He saw the upper part pf the hall was completely dark. He found suddenly that kind of love was blind So he learnt something from the things he saw in the Araby. It was the darkness that made him see clearly in his heart. so when he found there was something wrong he would be angry. Before he went to Araby,he was blind When he was at the center Araby, there was a sudden comprehension of the truth insight, and when he went out from Araby, Maybe he was conscious although the author didn’t mention, we can see from the last sentence which implicated the boy had seen through the darkness. So the author used The Araby as the title of the article,it could be a cule for us to maintain the whole background at that time. The author might want to tell us Araby is something the boy have to face, unless he have suffered it, he would understand the life better. That was a period every boy of that age must encounter.
