A few days ago,president Obama said, "everything his administration does,anything one of his aids does is interpreted in one fashion or another.In America,we call it spin." in G20 summit.This statement makes us to pay attention to interpretation again.
Interpretation is not a simple thing.Not only some unexpected situations could lead to some misunderstanding ,but also some experienced interpreters also perhaps make some mistakes.
Interpreters are more important in some international interactions,for example,some great events, business negotiations,news conferences,Olympic Games live,World Cup live.A little mistake can mislead thousands of people.
January 10, 2006，a statement issued from the CNN in Atlanta headquarters said that because of interpretation errors, it reported that in the speech ,mahmoud ahmadinejad said,"Iran has the right to use of nuclear energy peacefully, such a right is inalienable." and "our nation don't need nuclear weapons." But CNN television mistakenly interpreted into "nuclear is inalienable rights for Iran".It caused a international uproar.The statement claimed CNN would apologize to the Iranian government and Iranian permanent U.N. representative through its all platform, including international channels, the American channels and their web sites.Iran's islamic culture and guide dept published a statement in the day that because CNN was lack of professional ethics in television coverage ,all journalists press had been revoked and never would give them issued press. But the statement said that the Iranian government would decide whether it would the withdraw the decision according to the performance of CNN television in the future.(
It is obvious that the qualities of interpretation and the professional ethics of interpreters should be improved in all countries.The intonations of some interpreters are blew the standards.Especially,when they meet with dialect or slang,they will become confused.Another reason is perhaps that the interpreters have no rich knowledge in all areas.As they interpret some items in a professional area which they don't understand.It is much easier to make mistakes,
However,some other external factors also have a bad influence on interpretation.
The second example is about simultaneous interpretation. The interpretation incident is about President Clinton's visit to Vietnam in 2000.A title called A Good Interpreter is not Enough from Washington was reported by Reuters in Nov.29 ,2000.The content was that Sean Lam immigrated USA from South Vietnam.When Clinton visited to Vietnam ,he worked as the interpreter for Clinton.It's an admirable job,but it is a nightmare for Sean Lam.(
If interpretation is good enough,people will take it for granted.People could be conscious of the exitence of interpreters until it happens interpretation accident.
This interpretation accident is not only because Lam has Southern accent, northerner couldn't understand well,but also some other reasons.Firstly,Clinton corrected a part of content of the speech before the start of a few minutes.Lam didn't have enough time to prepare.Secondly,the spot was filled with journalists,so his work place was too noisy to concentrate his mind on the speech.Especially,When Clinton talked about human rights which was the new part,he speeded up.Lam couldn't hear clearly,so he only could comprehend roughly,as a result that he missed some points.For example,Clinton said,"In our experience,guaranteeing the right to religious worship and the right to political dissent does not threaten the stability of a society."Lam interpreted,"In our experience,allowing the right to religious worship does not affect the institutions.Instead it makes our institutions better."Clinton said,"Vietnam has agreed it will subject important decisions to the rule of law and the international trading system,increase the flow of information to its people,and accelerate the rise of a free economy and the private sector.Lam only interpreted into "international trading system".
If we want to avoid this kind of accident,we need customer education.Reuters made a proper conclusion that a good interpreter is not enough.A successful interpretation needs the cooperation from some workers,including the customers and rear-service workers.
These years, the interpretation market in China is swelling quickly.However,it leads that the interpretation lacks proper standards and low level of content.Different countries have different habits and expressions.A word,in a country,the expression is kindness that causes people good imagination.But in another country,the expression may be a bad meaning that causes people's misunderstanding.Some interpreters speak frankly.It could make others feel direct and even impolite.Interpreters should pay attention to use more euphemistic ways of speaking.

When a company did business with foreigners, a interpreter said,"Your resource-based products can find a stable market in China and Chinese industrial products can meet the needs of your market."It was literal translation,and the foreigners perhaps considered that our products will conquer their market.If the interpreter said,"You may find a stable market in China for your primary products and may also a number of industrial products from China to meet some of your needs."The other example is that interpreter said,"I wish to talk on China's economic development in which you are interested."It means that the listeners are surely interested in his statement.Although the listeners are surely interested in his words,we should be more polite.We can change into "I would like to brief you on China's economic development,which might be of interest to you".What's more ,most of the people dealing with us are the upper circles, we must learn to speak with polite and elegant way, otherwise,it can make distance, we will lose friends and damage our image.In 1974,a member of Canada "Bethune memorial commission"said to our receptionist that the way of speaking of our interpreter is too impolite and inflexible just like a policeman,because the interpreter said,"You have breakfast at 8,get your luggage downstairs at 8:30 and leave here for the airport at 9."This left a bad impression on foreign guests .
As a English major student,we are likely to be interpreters in the future.We should care about some details and try our best to leave good impression on our foreign guests.We must dare to undertake the responsibilities and contribute to develop our country's image in international world.

Abstract:In peace with our country entering WTO in 2001,and holding the 29th Olympic Games in 2004 and Shanghai expo in2009 successfully.Interpretation is becoming more and more important.However,interpretation also has some issues in some occasions,it leads to some misunderstanding.
