一轮复习阅读材料 unit9 Wheels 阅读下列短文,按要求完成任务 A Driving a car is not just handling controls and judging speed and distance. It requires you to predict what other road users will do and get ready to react to something unexpected. When alcohol is consumed,it enters your bloodstream and acts as a depressant(抑制药),damaging eyesight, judgment and coordination(协调),slowing down reaction time and greatly increasing the risk of accidents. Even below the drink driving link, driving will be affected. Alcohol may take a few minutes to be absorbed into the bloodstream and start action on the brain. Absorption rate is increased when drinking on an empty stomach or when consuming drinks mixed with fruit juice. To get rid of alcohol from the body is a very slow process and it is not possible to speed it up with any measures like taking a shower or having a cup of tea or coffee. The present Road Traffic Ordinance states clearly that the limit of alcohol concentration is: ●50 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of blood;or ●22 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath;or ●67 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of urine(尿液). Drivers who cause traffic accidents,or who commit a moving traffic offence or are being suspected of drink driving will be tested. Any drive found drinking beyond the limit will be charged. The driver declared guilty may be fined a maximum of HK $25,000 and be sentenced to up to 3 years in prison and punished for 10 drivingoffence points;or temporarily banned from driving. The same punishment applies to failing to provide specimens(样本)for breath, blood or urine tests without good excuse. Drink driving is a criminal offence. Be a responsible driver, think before you drink. For the safety of yourself and other road users, never drive after consuming alcohol. Task1 The passage is about Task2 Choose the best answers 1.The first paragraph is mainly about________. A.the introduction of driving skills B.the damage of drinking to your body C.the effect of drinking on driving D.the process of alcohol being absorbed 2.The underlined word “it” in the second paragraph refers to “________”. A.alcohol B.absorption C.blood D.process 3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A.Drinking below the drink driving limit has no effect on driving. B.Alcohol is taken in more quickly when drunk with fruit juice. C.Having a cup of tea helps to get rid of alcohol from the body. D.50 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of breath is below the drink limit. 4.A driver suspected of drink driving________. A.should provide specimens for testing B.will be forbidden to drive for 3 years C.will be punished for 10 drivingoffence points D.should pay a maximum fine of HK $25,000 B Has been a dream for 30 years but now the world's first flying car is set to hit the roads this year. Ever since the Back to the Future movies lit up our screens in the 1980s,designers have dreamt of cars that could take to the sky at the push of a button(按钮).And now pilots can order their own“roadable” plane for just £127,000. The plane, which has foldout wings that span(翼展)17.5 feet, can be up to 115 mph. Back on the land,it can also travel at“highway speeds”in car mode(状态). Fuelling(加燃料)the 19 feet long plane couldn't be simpler—you just drive it into a petrol station and fill it up. A spokeswoman said,“You can keep your‘lightsport airplane’ in your garage. But because it needs a short runway to take to the air,you will have to drive to your local airport, fly up to 460 miles, land and drive directly to your destination(目的地).You will always be ready to drive or fly.” The spokeswoman added,“Never let bad weather change your trip. You can simply divert(转向)and continue on the ground until the weather clears.” There's no risk to you—this is only the chance for you to be the first at your home field to unfold(展开)your wings and fly into the future. Task1 The passage is about Task2 Choose the best answers 5.According to the text,the“roadable”plane________. A.can fly in the sky at “highway speeds” in car mode B.is a kind of car with foldout wings C.is a little difficult to fuel D.can only travel on the highway 6.We can infer that in the Back to the Future movies________. A.there are some skillful pilots B.pilots have no cars to drive C.pilots can't afford a “roadable” plane D.cars can fly in the sky 7.What does the underlined word “it” in the 5th paragraph refer to? A.The “roadable” plane. B.Your garage. C.The local airport. D.A petrol station. 8.The last paragraph of the text aims to________. A.call for people to buy the “roadable” plane B.show people the use of the “roadable” plane C.tell people only the “roadable” plane can fly in the future D.ask people to unfold their wings and fly into the future C After years of research and testing, the hybrid car 1 (develop) and put on the market. It's an interesting and 2 (excite) new improvement in today's world as we look for better ways 3 (protect) the quality of the air we breathe and conserve our natural 4 (resource). The quality of our air is affected by many different things. 5 one of the largest sources of air pollution is the burning of fossil fuels 6 coal and gasoline which is used to power a 7 (car) engine. The EPA has set national standards to help control the level of 8 (harm) pollutants 9 (send) off into the air,and the automobile industry has acted by producing a hybrid car that uses less gas and 10 causes less pollution. A hybrid car is a combination of a regular car that runs on gasoline and an electric car that is battery powered. Some people tend to think that since the hybrid car is partially electric, you have to plug it in to charge it.But that's not how it works. The 144 volt battery pack is actually recharged through the energy that is produced when the car's brakes are used. This is referred to as“regenerative braking”,because it generates electricity. Although the hybrid car still runs on gasoline most of the time, this helps it use less gas than a regular car. When the driver stops at a traffic light, the engine automatically shuts off to save fuel. Then,as soon as the driver puts the car in gear and touches the gas pedal, the engine starts back up. Have you ever ridden in a car with someone who ran out of gas? That probably wouldn't happen if you were riding in a hybrid car. It flashes a warning on its computer screen that says, “I am low on gas”.When it completely runs out,the warning reads,“YOU ARE NOW OUT OF GAS!”Then the electric power supply kicks in to let the driver travel a few more miles to a gas station. Task1 Fill in the blanks Task2 The passage is about Task3 Choose the best answers 9.Which of the following is true according to the passage? A.The hybrid car will be put on the market. B.Hybrid cars run faster than regular cars. C.When the hybrid car stops at a traffic light, the driver will get a warning. D.The burning of fossil fuels is one of the largest sources of air pollution. 10.According to the passage, the word“hybrid”refers to________. A.a hightech discovery B.energy saving C.a new invention D.a combination of two things 11.“Regenerative breaking” is an important process of the hybrid car because________. A.it allows the car to come to a quick stop B.it gives the driver a smoother ride C.it produces energy to charge the battery D.it can control the speed of the car 12.Which of the following is right about the EPA? A.They designed hybrid cars. B.They outlawed(宣布……为不合法)the burning of fossil fuels. C.They set important guidelines that help control pollution. D.Their main purpose is to protect endangered plants and animals. D This week, the City of Westminster will start putting the first of 3,000 sensors into the streets. They will be in the ground by the end of March, made London the world first major city to have the“smart parking”revolution. An idea is simple. Drivers spend an average of 15 minutes searching a space in Westminster—which with Parliament, the main shopping district, and dozen of tourist sites,is the heart of London. If drivers know where the empty spaces are there, they won't have to search the streets for one. Other cities, most famous San Francisco, have experimented with“smart parking” and companies from France to America was developing the technology. Thus San Francisco turned off their sensors on 30 Dec.2013,and is now evaluating the results of its program. Westminster is going at full speed, fixing 50 sensors a day with a team of three men. Boroughs in Manchester and Birmingham are also trying out the system. Each sensor in the ground detects when a car is parked on the street above it. The information is then sent to the public through a smartphone app. Westminster has 10,000 parking places that visitors can use. The first part of the program will see 3,000 sensors, each with a battery life of five to seven years. The list of benefits is long:Apart from reducing traffic, fuel consumption, and emissions from cars,it improves the local economy as people spend more time in shops, restaurants and offices rather than on the street. Fitsall says the information will finally be fed into London's transport information network,so shen drivers look up how to get into town, they'll be able to see driving and parking times just as they an now get grain journey times and walking distances to stations. That could make London a model for other cities. Task1 Find the ten mistakes in the first paragraph Task2 The passage is about Task3 Choose the best answers 13.Some sensors in Westminster which are put into the streets will________.
