STEP 1 Talking about the weather
First, get the students to talk about the weather today. This is an activity that can be organized throughout the whole.
STEP 2 Showing a picture of snowy days
Show a picture of snowy days and then get the students to talk about the weather condition. Encourage the students to discuss what will happen to cars and people.
Picture A: It’s snowy. The snow is heavy. The heavy snow covers the ground. It covers everything. (Teach the word ‘cover’.)
Picture B: It is difficult to walk. It is easy for people to fall over.
Picture C: It is dangerous to drive a car. Look at the picture there is car accident.
Two people are trapped in the car. They can’t get out. They are victims. (Teach the word ‘victim’.)
STEP 3 Discussing about what the victims can do
Get the students to discuss about what the victims can do to get someone to help them.
STEP 4 Looking at the two reports on Page 102
Explain that Mr. and Mrs. Su had a car accident during the snowstorm. Ask students to look at the two reports on Page 102 and explain that the report form in Part A1 is from the 110 hotline where as the report in Part A2 is made by the policemen after they rescued Mr. and Mrs. Su.
Explain the items in the report form and make sure that they can understand it.
STEP 5 Playing the tape two times
Play the tape two times for the students to find as much information as possible. And then fill in the report form. And of course, it is impossible for them to complete the table by listening.
Get them to read the repot below and find more information.
(One thing to mention here is that the teacher can also get students to understand how the victims through their voice. If possible, get them to imitate it. )
STEP 6 Checking the answers
After completing the report form, invite the student to check the answers in pairs. Make sure that all the students get the answers right.
STEP 7 Making up a new dialogue
Get the students to work in pairs and make up a new dialogue between an interviewer and Mr. or Mrs. Su.
Say, ‘An interviewer went to see Mr. Su and Mrs. Su in the hospital, he/she interviewed them about the accident.’ Invite the students to talk about the information in the report form or they can add something.
STEP 8 Completing Sandy’s e-mail
Students work on their own to complete Sandy’s e-mail. Remind the less able student to look at the two reports.
Students compare their answers with each other. And then practice reading the e-mail by themselves for 2-3 minutes. Get some of the students to read aloud the e-mail in class. Praise them for correct pronunciation and intonation.
STEP 9 Locating some language points and sentences patterns
Go through the e-mail and help the students to locate some language points and sentences patterns.
Su Ning called the 110 hotline at 7.40 p.m. using his mobile phone.
They sent them to Sunshine Hospital.
He felt cold and frightened but he was not hurt.
Mrs. Su hurt her left leg but it was not very serious.
STEP 10 Calling the police for help
Divide the students into two groups. Suppose that they are in different situations and encourage them to call the police for help.
Group A: It rained hard. You drove a car. Unluckily, you crashed into another car. Then you called 110. ……
Group B: There was a lightning. It just started a fire. Your parents and you were all worried, and then you called 119. ……
Get the students to act out their dialogues.
STEP 11 Do some consolidation exercises
1.雪下得很大。 厚厚的积雪覆盖了一切。
It snows very heavily. Thick snow covers everything.
2.他在事故中受伤,但不严重。
He was hurt in the accident, but it was not very serious.
3.John经常用手机给他的父母打电话。
John often calls his parents with/using his mobile phone.
4.警察来把他们送进了医院。
The policemen arrived and sent them to hospital.
STEP 12 Homework
Finish off the exercises in books.
