Unit 3 What were you doing when the UFO arrived
Language goals:
Talk about the past events and tell a story.

Step 1. Free talk
Let students say some things you did yesterday or last weekend.
Step 2. Presentation

Listen to the tape and circle the correct responses.
1. First read the responses by themselves.

Step 8. Grammar focus
1. Get the students to read the sentences, pay attention to the word “when” and “while”.
2. Ask differences between “when” and “while”.
Explain: The word WHEN comes before a quick action that happens only once. The word WHILE comes before an action that continues for some time.
3. Ask the students to make the sentences with the word WHEN and WHILE. They can say the sentences from this unit.

1. Learn and master the vocabulary words.

Teaching aims:

Step 1. Warm-up
1. Check up the homework.
2. Read your passage about the past events for the class.
Step 2. Learn the new words
1. Get the students to read the new words by themselves.
2. Ask some students to read them and if they can read them correctly.
3. Practice reading them.
Read after the teacher or the tape recorder.
Read them together; in parts, one by one.
Be sure the students can read them correctly.

Read the e-mail passage and number the pictures in the correct order.

5. Students read the passage again and find if they have the difficulties.

Cover the passage; try to tell the story to your partner.
1. Get the students to retell the story by themselves with the help of the passage.
2. Take the turns to tell the story.
The teacher can give some words to help the students tell the story.

3. Practice asking and answering the questions in small groups.

1. The teacher show the pictures or do some activities of “jumping, shouting, riding a bike, climbing, running away, coming in”.
2. The teacher asks one student to read the new words.
3. Then practice reading the words.
Read after the teacher / the student who can read the words correctly; read together; read in parts; one by one.
4. Get the students to read and remember the words: the spelling, the Chinese meanings.

(2) Linda couldn’t see Davy because the station was too crowded.
(3) Davy was outside the station.
(4) Davy met another dog outside the station.

Step 4. Writing practice 4a
Use the pictures to write the story.
1. Read the instructions to the students. Explain it to them.
2. Get the students to look at the pictures, ask one student to explain what is
happening in each picture.
3. Let students to write the story. Remember to use the time in the pictures.
4. Ask some students to read their stories. And see if there are different stories.

Practice the students speaking and listening skills in this part.
1. Read the instructions to the students. Work in pairs, talk about what was happening at these times. Play the role of the police officer and the bicycle thief.
2. Ask the students to work the conversation by themselves.
3. Ask some students to practice the conversation in class. Role play the conversation. And choose the best role players.
