Unit 4 Wild animals
The lessonI will teach today is about the Reading Part named “ The Story of XiWang ”, in 8A, Unit 4. The teaching aim of this lesson is: 1. to guess the general meaning from context; 2. to infer meaning from students’ own background and knowledge; 3. to identify specific meanings by scanning the text.
The teaching steps of this lesson are : 1. Revision 2. Elicitation 3. Reading, listening and practice (Paragraph 1-3) 4.Reading, listening and practice (Paragraph 4-8) 5. Reading,listening and discussion 6. Homework
In the last lesson Ss learnt the names of some animals , so in the first step I will show Ss some pictures of lovely animals , and get Ss to say their names out one by one;
The second step is Elicitation . First , I will show the pictures of giant pandas to my Ss , tell them to use their own knowledge about pandas to complete the following table; If Ss have some difficulty doing this, I can ask them some questions to help them finish the work , like : What color are the panda’s eyes ? Why do we love them so much ?, encourage Ss to say their answers out to the class; Then , I will tell Ss we are going to learn a lesson to get more knowledge about pandas. Let Ss read the report on page 60 , and look at the exercise on the Screen , that is to let Ss find the right paragraphs according to the main ideas. Check answers together after doing it.
Step 3 Reading, listening and practice is designed about Paragraph1-3. First , I will let Ss read the first 3 paragraphs of the report to know something about giant panda XiWang , after that, they will be asked some questions to check their understanding, such as : 1. At birth, how much did it weigh? 2.What did she look like when she was 10 days old? 3.When she was 4 months old how heavy was she? And what did she start to do? 4.When did she start to eat bamboo shoots and leaves? Then , Play the recording of Paragraph 1-3 in the report, and get students to read these 3 paragraphs with the tape; After that , let students look at a growth chart of Xi Wang on the Screen, and match the sentences with the pictures, then write the correct letters in the boxes ; Check the answers and get Ss to read the sentences and tell us the growth of XiWang in their own words.
Step 4 Reading, listening and practice which is designed about Paragraphs 4-8 has 3 parts : In the first part, I will get Ss to learn some words appearing in P4-8 by asking them to look at the Screen and match the words on the left with the meanings on the right. If they have some difficulty, they can look at the phrases on the Bb to help them guess the meaning of each word, after finishing it , let Ss read the phrases on the Bb together. In Part 2 , I’ll get students to read Paragraph4-8 of the report and let them find out what problems giant pandas are facing and what we can do to protect them, ask Ss to find out the information from the paragraphs , and put it into the following table. In the third part, play the recording of Paragraph 4-8, and let students read these paragraphs at the same time; Then, get students to close their books and do the exercise on the Screen; After they finish it, check the answers and let them read the completed sentences together.
Step 5 Reading, listening and discussion . Ask students to read the whole report together, then let them close their books and listen to the recording , make sure that they have got the meaning of the report; Then , let them look at the questions on the Screen, and discuss the questions with their partners . Encourage some students to present their ideas to the class.
Step 6 Homework.:
1. Write an article about the other problems giant pandas will have and the actions we should take;
2. Read “the Story of XiWang”, finish some exercises in Assessment Book
