Yes, it turns out that overweight may damage cognitive functions (认知功能) such as memory and attention. There have been few studies of overweight and cognitive functioning, possibly because it is generally believed that it is not a primary risk cause for poor cognitive performance. Losing weight, therefore, may help improve these mental functions, according to a new research led by John Gunstad, assistant professor of psychology at Kent State University. Growing evidence suggests that being fat is linked to cognitive deficits (缺陷). So Gunstad and his team guessed that losing weight might improve mental function. For their study, they measured memory and attention in a group of 150 overweight participants, some of whom had some kind of operation for weight loss and some did not. All of the volunteers completed mental skills tests to assess their abilities of memory and attention at the beginning of the study, and again 12 weeks later. To begin with, about 24% of the patients showed damaged learning and 23% showed signs of poor memory when tested. At the end of the study, those who had lost weight after operation improved their scores into the average or above average range for cognitive functions. Scores for the volunteers who didn’t lose weight dropped even further. The study helped Gunstad to find out whether losing weight had any effect on mental function. Now that he’s seen the positive effect that weight loss can have on memory and attention, he says he will next study those who choose to lose weight by the traditional way—eating healthier and getting more active. He expects that losing weight in this way will have a similarly positive effect on the brain. “If we can improve the condition with operations, then we can probably produce the same change with behavioral weight loss as well,” he says. 1、There is less research on overweight and cognitive functions because researchers ________. A.believe overweight only affects our body B.have focused on ways to sharpen people’s mind C.do not consider overweight a main cause for low cognitive ability D.are clear about the relation between weight and mental functions 2、The result of Gunstad’s study shows that ________. A.losing weight has little effect on people’s memory B.losing weight can improve people’s mental functions C.overweight people are likely to have psychology problems D.overweight people’s abilities of concentration differ greatly 3、What is Gunstad planning to prove next in his research? A.Slim people are smarter than overweight people. B.Healthy diet is better than exercise in losing weight. C.Traditional ways of losing weight are better than operation. D.Overweight people will get smarter by taking more exercise. 4、Which of the following is the best title for the text? A.Body Weight and Health B.Losing Weight by Operation C.Ways to Improve Mental Functions D.Losing Weight to Sharpen Your Mind 22.(8分)Long ago, people who were rich or important rode horses that were very tall. Today, if a girl acts like she is better than everyone else, you might say she should “get off her high horse.” Yesterday, my children wanted me to take them to the playground. But I had to finish my work, so I told them to “hold your horses” — wait until I finish what I am doing. My two boys like to compete against each other and play in a violent way. I always tell them to stop “horsing around” or someone could get hurt. We live in a small town. It does not have any exciting activities to offer visitors. My children call it a “one-horse town.” Last night, I got a telephone call while I was watching my favorite television show. I decided not to answer it because “wild horses could not drag me away” from the television — there was nothing that could stop me from doing what I wanted to do. Sometimes you get information “straight from the horse’s mouth.” It comes directly from the person who knows most about the subject. Let us say your teacher tells you there is going to be a test tomorrow. You could say you got the information “straight from the horse’s mouth.” You may have heard this expression, “You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink.” That means you can give someone advice but you cannot force him to do something he does not want to do. 1、How many idioms(习语) about “horse” does the passage talk about? A.5 B.6 C.7 D.8 2、What’s the probable meaning of “hold your horses”? A.wait a moment B.stop working C.keep on trying D.never do that again 3、When you get the information “straight from the horse’s mouth”, it means the information is_____. A.reliable B.false C.useless D.frightening 4、When someone forces you to do something as he advises, you can say “______” to him. A.hold your horses B.You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink C.get off your high horse D.wild horses could not drag me away 5、What’s the main idea of the passage? A.It mainly talks about horse in the west. B.It mainly introduces some idioms about horse. C.It mainly shows the importance of horse. D.It’s mainly about the quality of horse. 23.(8分) Electric cars are dirty. In fact, not only are they dirty, they might even be dirtier than their gasoline-powered cousins. People in California love to talk about “zero-emissions vehicles”, but people inCalifornia seem to be clueless about where electricity comes from. Power plants mostly use fireto make it. Aside from the new folks who have their roofs covered with solar cells, we get ourelectricity from generators (发电机). Generators are fueled by something—usually coal, oil,but also by heat generated in nuclear power plants. There are a few wind farms andgeothermal (地热)plants as well, but by far we get electricity mainly by burning something. In other words, those “zero-emissions” cars are likely coal-burning cars. It’s justbecause the coal is burned somewhere else, it looks clean. It is not. It’s as if the CaliforniaGreens are covering their eyes—“ If I can’t see it, it’s not happening.” Gasoline is anincredibly efficient way to power a vehicle; a gallon of gas has a lot of energy in it. But whenyou take that gas (or another fuel) and first use it to make electricity, you waste a nice partof that energy, mostly in the form of wasted heat—at the generator, through the transmissionlines, etc. A gallon of gas may propel your car 25 miles. But the electricity you get from that gallonof gas won’t get you as far — so electric cars burn more fuel than gasoline-poweredones. If our electricity came mostly from nukes or geothermal, or hydro or wind or solar, thenan electric car truly would be clean. But for political, technical, and economic reasons, wedon’t use much of those energy sources. In addition, electric cars’ batteries which are poisonous for a long time will eventuallyend up in a landfill. And finally, when cars are the polluters, the pollution is spread acrossall the roads. When it’s a power plant, though, all the junk is in one place. Nature is verygood at cleaning up when things are too concentrated, but it takes a lot longer when all thegarbage is in one spot. 1、What is the main idea of the text? A.Electric cars are far from being clean. B.Electric cars are better than gasoline-powered ones. C.People cast doubts on electric cars’ batteries. D.Gasoline is an efficient way to power a vehicle. 2、The electricity we get from a gallon of gas may make our car run____. A.no less than 25 miles B.as far as 50 miles C.less than 25 miles D.as far as 25 miles 3、According to the text, electric cars____. A.are more environmentally friendly B.burn more fuel than gas-powered ones C.are very good at cleaning up when things are not too concentrated D.are poisonous for a long time and will eventually end up in a landfill 4、It can be inferred from the text that____. A.being green is good and should be encouraged in communication B.electric cars are the dominant vehicles compared with their gas-poweredcousins C.zero-emissions vehicles should be chosen to protect our environment D.electric cars are not clean because we get electricity mainly by burning something 24.(8分)Away with words The telegraph, an online news service, has teamed up with Saga, which provides products and services only for the over 50s, to hold a new competition to find the best travel writer. Three lucky winners will win a master class with two top Telegraph travel writers before travelling the world with Saga on one of three holidays of great comfort and pleasure. To enter, all you need to do is tell us something mysterious and wonderful about the world of travel—a favorite memory, a humorous tale, an unforgettable occasion or a sight worth writing about. What we are looking for You must be able to read not only those signs that help you find your way around but the ones that tell you how the locals tick. You must, in the words of Paul Theroux, an American travel writer, “descibe exactly what you see and give it life with your imgaination”. In this competition, you can do that in anything from 150 words to 500, but they should be your words, and fresh ones. We do expect you not to hide the truth or the facts about your experience. Beyond that, you can make the most of the freedom travel writing gives you. You’ll be editor as well as writer, so ensure those eyes are equally fresh when you check and recheck what you’ve written. We will make allowances for the occasional mistake, such as you have “fell” into a river. But we won’t put up with mistakes every few lines. Terms & conditions Competitors must be aged 50 years or older. The judging process is divided into two stages: entries will be hosted on the website for one month. The top 20 articles will then be selected by public vote. The top three winners will be chosen by three judges. The closing date for entries is August 15. 1、What does the prize for winners include? These “holidays” have become very popular across the United States. They often are trending stories on Twitter, and described in the U.S. media. They give people a chance to enjoy something they might not eat normally, like National Onion Ring Day, for example.Food holidays also give restaurants and other businesses a chance to promote their products. But where did these distinctly American “holidays” come from? Many are the invention of an Alabama man, John-Bryan Hopkins. He writes about food for his F website.Hopkins told Time magazine that when he began his site in 2006, there were only 175 “holidays.” “I filled in the rest,” he said. Some of his favorites are National Oreo Cookie Day on March 6 and National Tater Tot Day on February 2. The National Day Calendar has a list of all the different food and non-food related “holidays.” In the past, the website used to let anyone create their own day -- for a price. But now, the site only accepts requests from businesses and other organizations. While some
