Unit 1 Past and Present
Reading (II)
I. Teaching aims and learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. have a deeper understanding of the interview;
2. know how to use the new language points correctly;
3. rewrite the interview into a report;
4. realize the beauty of our hometown and encourage students to protect it.

II. Teaching contents
1. New words and phrases: since, ever, northern, married, wife, block, since, over, pollution, factory, waste, realize, improve, situation, however, impossible, before, lonely, anyway, husband, interview, turn … into …, in some ways, from time to time, all one’s life
2. New structures: Do you know Sunshine Town very well, Mr Chen?
I’ve lived here since I was born.
Has the town changed a lot over the years?
Now the government has turned part of the town into a new park.
It has become impossible for us to see each other as often as before.
Now I feel a bit lonely from time to time.

IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Revision
1. Changes in Sunshine Town
Help the students to review the changes in Sunshine Town. Give them chances to show themselves in class and remind them that they should pay attention to the tense when they describe the past and the present of Sunshine Town.
2. Group work
Work in groups and discuss the changes Mr Chen has experienced.
【设计意图：指导学生用不同的时态来描述不同时段的状态，同时给学生展示自我的机会。就Mr Chen和阳光镇的变化给出一些关键词，帮助学生理清文章的脉络。】

Step 2 Presentation
1. Mr Chen’s housing
(1) Ask the students to work in pairs and make an interview about Mr Chen’s housing with the help of the chart, some pictures and some key words.
(2) Present some sentences about the changes, and ask the students to work out the rules of the simple past tense and the present perfect tense.
(3) Learn the language point—marry. Then do some exercises.
2. Facilities
(1) Ask the students to complete two passages and talk about the town’s past and present.
(2) Learn the language point—turn … into …/turn + adj. Then do some exercises.
3. Pollution
(1) Show some pictures and a video and talk about the advantages and disadvantages of development.
(2) Learn the language points—pollute, pollution and polluted. Then do some exercises.
(3) Ask the students to think over the question: What’s the development of the society? Tell them that the government has realized the problems and is trying to improve the situation.
(4) Learn the language point—improve and improvement. Then do some exercises.
(5) Have a group discussion: What does the development of the society bring us? What action can we take to improve the situation?
4. Mr Chen’s life
(1) Talk about what Mr Chen thinks of the present life. Learn more phrases about “way”. And translate two sentences.
(2) Learn the language point—alone and lonely. Then do some exercises.

Step 3 Practice
1. Rewrite the interview into a report
Ask the students to rewrite the interview into a report in the perspective of Mr Chen.
2. Retell the changes
Work in pairs to retell the changes in Sunshine Town with the help of some key words and phrases.
3. Complete the passage
Ask the students to use words and phrases we learnt to finish a passage about urbanization.
4. Translate the sentences
Ask the students to translate some sentences into English.
【设计意图：以Mr Chen的语气改写课文来让学生重新从整体上把握课文。另外通过语篇形式来考察学生对四会生词和短语的掌握情况。】

Step 4 Production
1. Enjoy a video about the changes in Yangzhou.
2. Design a poster about the changes in Yang Zhou’s transport, environment and people’s life. Try to call on more people to protect our city.
