Unit 5 Going Shopping Period nine
Objectives
1. To write a guide to a shopping mall
2. To develop an awareness of audience and appropriate register
3. To develop an understanding of discourse: sentence structure, paragraphing and linking sentences
4. To describe the layout of a shopping mall
Teaching procedures
Step1
Explain the context and instructions carefully. Make sure that students become enthusiastic. Ensure that students understand the purpose of writing a guide. Ask the students :
What would they like to see n a shopping guide?
What kind of people would read it?
Explain very clearly that a guide must be write for a particular audience and they need to decide up on this before they start the writing task.
Step2
Ask the students to read the notes in part a and check for understanding of vocabulary. Tell them that when we write notes, we do not need to write in complete sentences, we just need to write down the key points.
Step3.
Ask the students to do work in pairs. Talk to students about the context. Explain that Simon wants to write a guide to Sunnyside shopping mall. Ask them to focus on sentence constructions, linking ideas in paragraphs. For more able students, ask them to write a heading for each paragraph in part b. for less able students, write the headings on the board for them to refer to,
Step4.
1>.Ask the students to read through the guide and underline any words they do not know. 2>.Explain these words from the notes in Part A.

Walk around the class and give advice and help when necessary.
Step5.
Ask for volunteers to read out different paragraphs of the completed guide. Check for correct answer.
Extension activity
1>.Ask the students to describe shopping malls they are familiar with。 Ask them:
Where is the shopping mall?
What kind of people can read the shopping mall?
How many floors are there?
etc. if possible, ask them to bring in some photos of these shopping mall. If students can’t think of a shopping mall, tell them to use the one shown on page 84.
2>.more able students ma be able to do this writing task on their own. For less able students, let them work n group, e.g. group of four.
3>. Ask the students to make some notes about their chosen shopping mall based on the model in Part A. If students do not know all the information about the shopping malls, ask them to write down a list of thing to find out about the shopping malls, e.g., numbers of floors, the kind of shops.
4>. Using the following phrases. Let some students to describe his/her chosen shopping mall to the class.
near my home ,above the underground station, quite big , four floors, two clothes , a fast food restaurant on the ground floor, a supermarket, cinema on the fourth floor, toy shop, my favourite shop, look at the new books, meet my friends
