He became famous as a ragtime (拉格泰姆音乐) composer and piano player. Ragtime music was an early form of jazz. This music has a lively beat and was developed from the music of African Americans. Ragtime became popular in the early 1890s, and the music was played on the piano. The piano player usually made up a melody, then changed it a little bit every time he played. Scott Joplin was very good at composing, or making up music and playing the piano. When he was growing up, Joplin’s home was filled with music. Still, Joplin’s father did not want him to be a musician. When he was about 14 years old, Joplin left home to travel and start a life of his own. He traveled all over the Midwest playing the piano and composing music. Sometimes he played with music groups. Other times he sang by himself in noisy saloons and bars. In 1899, Joplin wrote Maple Leaf Rag, a ragtime song that became a big hit and earned Joplin the title of The King of Ragtime. In all, he wrote more than 500 songs. Joplin’s biggest dream was to compose a ragtime opera. Finally, after 10 years, Joplin completed a ragtime opera which he called Treemonisha. This opera was about a young black woman who became a leader of her people. She tried to help her people gain their freedom and their rights. 1916, Joplin became very sick. He had a disease that made him forget things and become easily afraid of things. In 1917, he was put in the hospital. He finally died there on April 1, 1917. Go Set a Watchman would be published in July. Lee became a recluse (隐士)after the publication of her first book, To Kill a Mockingbird, in 1960. Although the author has been out of the public eye for more than 50 years, the wave that followed the announcement showed her novel’s beloved place in the American literary works. In 1991, The Book of the Month Club and the library of Congress conducted a survey that made readers identify books that had made a difference in their lives. Lee’s book followed only The Bible. Alongside the works of Shakespeare and Twain, To Kill a Mockingbird remains one of the most widely taught books nationwide, reaching an estimated 70% of American public schools. What makes it such a perfect read for young people? English class is a place where young Americans come to know themselves. In the folds of dusty books, students can make contact with humanity beyond the superficial(肤浅的) conversations of the school hallways. Literature promises relief, a place to figure out one’s problems and get to know oneself better. To Kill a Mockingbird particularly distinguishes itself in this regard. It speaks in child’s voice without treating its readership as children. People have called it an ‘impossible’ achievement, a children’s book penned in the prose(散文) of a well-educated adult—it’s unlikely that a child like Scout could exist in the real world. But that’s exactly what makes it such a charming read for young people. It alludes to (转弯抹角地说到)the consciousness of a well-educated adult going through difficult realities, but shows it through the light and playful voice of a curious little girl. 1、In which year might Go Set a Watchman come out? A.2015 B.1960 C.1910 D.1991 2、Which book leaves the deepest impression on American readers? A.Go Set a Watchman B.To Kill a Mockingbird C.The Bible D.Shakespeare’s works 3、Which of the following statements is right about To Kill a Mockingbird? A.Its author may be a playful child. B.It’s a story about a well-educated adult. C.Young people can see themselves from it. D.It’s impossible for children like Scout to exist. 4、What is the best title for the text? A.The Great Writer: Harper Lee B.The Great Young People Novel C.Voices from Children D.Differences Harper Lee made 24.(8分) University of Pennsylvania researchers say that for the first time they have linked social media use to increases in depression and loneliness. The idea that social media is anything but social when it comes to mental health has been talked about for years, but not many studies have managed to actually link the two. To do that, Penn researchers, led by psychologist Melissa Hunt, designed a study that focused on WeChat, Snapchat and Instagram. The study was conducted with 143 participants, who before they began, completed a mood survey and sent along photos of their battery screens, showing how often they were using their phones to access social media. "We set out to do a much more complete study which attempts to imitate real life." Hunt said. The study divided the participants into two groups: The first group was allowed to maintain their normal social media habits. The other, the control group, was restricted to 10 minutes per day on social media. The restrictions were put in place for three weeks and then the participants returned and were tested for outcomes such as fear of missing out, anxiety, depression and loneliness. The results showed a very clear link between social media use and increased levels of depression and loneliness. "Using less social media than you normally do would lead to significant decreases in both depression and loneliness," Hunt said. Social media invites what Hunt calls "downward social comparison." "When you're online, it can sometimes seem that everyone else is cooler and having more fun and included in more things and you're left out," Hunt said. And that's just generally discouraging. "Every minute you spend online is a minute you are not doing your work or not meeting a friend for dinner or having a deep conversation with your roommate." And these real life activities are the ones that can encourage self﹣esteem and self﹣worth, Hunt added. "People are on their devices, and that's not going to change," she said. But as in life, a bit of control goes a long way. 1、Before the study was conducted, the participants completed a survey to . A.imitate people's real life B.link loneliness to depression C.show their use of social media D.prove social media is important 2、The results of the study showed using less social media would result in . A.people's fear of missing out B.higher levels of depression C.obvious relief in loneliness D.lower levels of happiness 3、In Hunt's opinion, which activity benefits more to mental health? A.Hiking out with friends. B.Making comparison with others. C.Playing computer games in spare time. D.Logging onto social media and having fun. 4、Which can be the best title of the passage? A.A Study on Social Media. B.How to Improve Mental Health. C.People Addicted to Social Media. D.Social Media Influences Mental Health. 25.(10分)If anyone knows what makes a great children's book, it must be Sussex author and illustrator(插图家) Jane Hissey. Her "Old Bear" books have achieved classic status in a variety of formats. I caught up with Jane at her home in the East Sussex countryside and asked her what she thinks is the secret of a classic children's book. "That's a difficult one. I suppose it's got to be relevant to the child's stage of development-for young children, pictures on a page that are familiar, for older children, an experience. The book should be familiar, but hold some surprises too to keep the interest. It must inspire and delight, but there are the things that happen every day." After the birth of her first child, she gave up teaching and worked on her own artwork, drawing pictures of teddy bears. An editor from a publishing company saw her work and invited Jane to do a children's book. Over the years, from the first "Old Bear" book in 1988, her children have made a huge contribution—not least in terms of plot. She said, "I used to give my children the toys to play with—and they had tea parties and so on. One of my bear charac
