M9U4 Reading –Biblical idioms in English

Teaching aims and demands:
1. Read an Internet article about idioms from the Bible that are used in English.
2. Help students to gain some knowledge about these idioms, understand their original meanings and learn about their practical usage in English.
3. Practice and reinforce students’ reading comprehension and improve their overall ability.
Teaching procedures:
Step I Lead-in
1. Show some idioms and pictures to students to check if the students know the meanings of the following idioms:
a wet blanket; pull my legs; no brainer; all ears
be in the same boat; rain cats and dogs; A frog in someone's throat.
be as cool as a cucumber
2. Ask students to give more idioms.
Step II Fast Reading:
1. Ask students to pick out the items mentioned in the passage.
2. Ask students to match each part of the article with its main idea.
Step Ⅲ: Detailed reading:
1. Ask students to read para1, then raise questions:
What is an idiom?
How can we successfully read idioms?
2. Ask students to read para2, then answer the two questions:
(1).Why does the Bible have a lot of idioms?
(2). What did “by and by” originally mean in the Bible?
3. Briefly introduce the Bible to the students.
4. Read Paragraph 3-6 and raise questions to them:
How many idioms are mentioned in this part?
What are they?
How do you understand them?
5. Ask students to do some exercises to consolidate the idioms.
6. Ask students to read the last paragraph and list the benefits of learning idioms
