During Napoleon’s invasion of Russia, his troops were battling in the middle of another small town in that cold land, when he was accidentally separated from his men. A group of Russian Cossacks found him and began chasing him. Napoleon ran into a little furrier(毛货商)’s shop and cried for help. The furrier covered Napoleon up with many furs. Soon the Russian Cossacks came in, shouting and tearing his shop apart trying to find Napoleon. But they didn’t find him. They gave up and left.
After some time, Napoleon came out from under the furs, just as Napoleon’s personal guards came in the door. The furrier turned to Napoleon and said timidly, “Excuse me for asking this question of such a great man, but what was it like to be under those furs, knowing that the next moment would surely be your last?”
Napoleon said to the furrier angrily, “How could you ask such a question of me, the Emperor Napoleon! Guards, take this man out, blindfold (蒙住眼睛) him and kill him.”
The guards dragged the poor furrier outside and blindfolded him. The furrier could see nothing, but he could hear the movements of the guards as they prepared their rifles, and he could hear the sound of his clothing in the cold wind. He could feel the uncontrollable trembling in his legs. Then he heard Napoleon clear his throat and call out slowly, “Ready … aim …” In that moment, knowing that even these few feelings were about to be taken from him forever, a feeling that he couldn’t describe appeared as tears poured down his cheeks.
After a long period of silence, the furrier heard footsteps’ stepping on the snow approaching him and the blindfold was taken off from his eyes. He saw Napoleon’s eyes looking deeply into his own eyes. Then Napoleon said softly, “Now you know.”

Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) is a French novelist and short story writer. He is considered as one of the modern masters of the art of the short story and has influenced many writers from his time to the present.
Born at Fécamp in Normandy of cultured, middle-class parents, Maupassant was an ordinary student who preferred swimming, boating and fishing at Etretat to school. His law studies in Paris were interrupted by the Franco-Prussian War from 1870 to 1871, which destroyed his family’s fortune and forced Maupassant to find a job as a government office clerk. The office work was so boring that he swam, boated and began to write.
French novelist Gustave Flaubert had been a friend of Maupassant’s mother, and in the 1870s he introduced Maupassant to Parisian literary society, controlled by Émile Zola and naturalism. The naturalist movement, led by Zola, emphasized the description of emotions and other forces that control human behavior. Soon Maupassant was a member of the naturalist group, and his story Ball of Fat was published in the Parties at Medan, a collection of stories about the Franco-Prussian War. Maupassant became an overnight celebrity and soon as the second best-selling author in France. The first was Zola.
For a decade Maupassant’s literary production was astounding. He wrote nearly 300 stories, 200 newspaper articles, 6 novels and 3 travel books. He became very wealthy and spent his earnings extravagantly. He led a dissolute(放纵的) life and by the late 1880s he had begun to show signs of mental illness. On New Year’s Day 1892, Maupassant attempted suicide and entered a clinic, where he died the following year.

B. Gustave Flaubert had played an introductory role in Maupassant’s becoming a writer.
C. The naturalist movement led by Zola was mainly about the Franco-Prussian War.
D. As the best-selling author of his time in France, Maupassant ranked just behind Zola.

Psychologists seeking the real secrets of happiness report that very happy people tend to be more social and agreeable than less happy people.
“Our findings suggest that very happy people have rich and satisfying social relationships and spend little time alone,” write psychologists Ed Diener and Martin E.P. Seligman in the journal Psychological Science.
Solid social relationships do not make sure to give happiness, but they are a significant contributing factor. The very happy people whom the authors studied all said they had good-quality social relationships. However, there is no single key to high happiness. The authors write, “High happiness seems to be like beautiful symphonic (交响乐) music. Many instruments are necessary, without any one being enough to the beautiful quality.”
Diener defines happiness as “subjective well-being” — in other words, the person judges his or her own quality of life. The question to ask is, “Is my life going well, according to the standards I choose to use?” If the answer is “yes”, then that person is judged to be happy.
Because people judge their lives based on happiness, subjective well-being is very important. Though necessary, it is not enough to have a good life, because there are other things we also value and would want,” says Dienor.
Can subjective well-being be measured scientifically? Diener identifies three components(成分) contributing to happiness: pleasant emotions and moods, lack of negative emotions and moods, and satisfaction judgments. Diener suggests steps you can take to ensure you are as happy as you can be.
62. According to Diener, .
A. happy people will never stay alone
B. solid social relationship is the only key to happiness
C. only subjective well-being can measure the quality of happiness
D. people with rich and good social relationships are happier
63. According to Diener, a person can be judged to be happy when he ______.
A. has many social relationships
B. owns a great sum of money
C. spends more time with other people
D. thinks his life is going well by his own standards
64. Happiness and symphonic music are common in that ______.
