President Bush plans to speak at an Omaha plastics factory today to sell his message that his tax cut plan will put money in worker’s pockets. But some workers at the factory, Airlite Plastics, are complaining that Mr. Bush’s speech will have the opposite effect.
They are unhappy because Airlite’s chief executive, Brad Crosby, has announced that more than 300 hourly workers might lose all or part of a day’s pay unless they work next Saturday to offset the time lost when the plant closes for the speech.
An airlite spokesman said in a telephone interview last night that most workers would be given four options when the plant is partly closed for one and a half shifts during the speech. They can take an official day off whether or not they attend the speech and make up the work on Saturday to receive full pay. They can use a paid vacation day. They can work their regular shift in part of the plant that will remain open. Or they can take an unpaid day off. This does not apply, however, to the 15 people who work in the area of the plant where the President will speak. They will receive their regular pay.
The company’s decision not to pay most of the workers during the Bush visit was first reported on Friday in The Omaha World-Herald. The newspaper said a man who said he was an Airlite employee complained to an editor in a voice mail message that some longtime employees would lose more than $ 130 in pay.

Wei, a single woman, from the northern coastal city of Dalian, says she enjoys working with colleagues and, at the weekend, buying a bunch of flowers to decorate her 120-square-meter-flat.
“I’m no different from anyone else-except that I don’t have to wash a man’s dirty socks or baby diapers,”Wei says in an airy tone.
In fact, in Chinese cities today, the number of single women is growing and the single life is accepted by more women. One study by the Horizon Research Company of six big cities found that 83 per cent of urban women accept the idea of the single life-they feel comfortable with the idea though they might not try it themselves, and the percentage is as high as 90 among women with a higher educational background.
Society is providing a more open environment, allowing women to be more independent, says Jiang Yongping, a specialist with the All China Women’s Federation. Economic development and changes in the way of living have helped more women become independent of men.
There used to be a saying that, for women, to marry was to live. Now, however, China’s urban women are better educated and have better work and better financial conditions.
Single women in their 20s or 30s, with higher incomes but no family burden, have become a significant part of the consumer society.
Some economists refer to it as the “single women’s economy”. In Shanghai, a single woman purchasing a flat is longer such a rareness.
Last November, Jilin Province did something a bit daring when it passed a regulation protecting single women’s reproductive rights, saying that a childless single woman at the childbearing age had the right to bear a child and could have medical support.
There are, unfortunately, lingering problems. Some still have regrets since they can not enjoy the happiness of a family.

July 27,2003 Sunny Rainy
This afternoon, it suddenly became dark when I was doing my homework. Just a little while, at about 3:30, it began to rain shortly after a big lightning. At once the rain poured down and the wind was so strong that it blew over some trees. Some houses were also pushed over. The rain was so heavy that water flooded many places. The big storm lasted about two and a half hours. After the storm, the traffic was blocked and the supply of water and electricity was cut off. Many people went out of their houses to clear the roads. So did I. Today was not a frightening day for me but also an unforgettable one.
