Purpose Through the exploration and analysis, this thesis arrives at the conclusion that in order to solve the problem mentioned above, woman has to keep independent personality in different relationships, only through this way they could attain the equal positions in society and family. 2. Contents Gone with the Wind is American writer Margaret Mitchell’s work on which she spent ten years. At that time, the society expected women to act as foil of men and be quiet and hide their abilities. Although most of female in Gone with the Wind are misses and ladies, in fact they are just honored guests in the front of the stage, they are still under the stage although they are near the stage. If they express their own opinions of the affair on the stage, they will be discussed by the society and criticized by people. The main character Scarlett dares to break through worldly blockade. She desires freedom in her heart and is reluctant to be restricted by the rigid moral norms. This thesis consists of five parts. Chapter 1 is an introduction. In this part, the author briefly introduces Margaret Mitchell and her novel and the studies on it at home and abroad. Chapter 2 is theoretical foundations. In this part the author introduces the feminist theory and the feminist and female characters in Gone with the Wind. Chapter 3 focuses on the personality and love of Scarlett O'Hara, explores the collision and compromise between the bio-sexual relationships. Chapter 4 focuses on the death of three important persons in Scarlett O'Hara's life, and the author tries to explore the issues of gender identity and female positions in this part. The last part Chapter 5 is conclusion. 3. significance This thesis employs the feminist literary critical theory, and explores Gone with the Wind in the feminist angle of view. Proceeding from analysis of the personality and love of Scarlett O'Hara, this thesis tries to explore the gender identity and female rights in the patriarchy society. 4.
