There's always someone who's a bit __32__. The only solution is to reach 33 and measure against what Warren Buffett calls your own inner yardstick. There is no more 34 measure for comparison than who you were yesterday, last week or last decade, when you were at your 35 .   Nothing useful ever comes from comparison to others. 36 you see yourself as better than someone and you get 37 , or you see someone else as better than you and you feel like all your hard work is for 38 . It is a fool's game. Not one of us is 39 alike. The only direct and honest comparison is 40 yourself. Everything else is apples to oranges.   My opinion is that you are only 41 to compare yourself to someone else if their life 42 is the same as your own. Good luck finding that match. And one thing is for sure. No matter how hard you work and how 43 you are, there will always be someone who can run a little faster, jump a little higher, score a little better or look a little nicer in a swimsuit. And if there's not, you can 44 someone is coming up fast behind you. So how can you always win in life? Become your best 45 .    Having an image of your most recent past limits is the perfect thing to 46 you to the next level. If you ran 7 flights of stairs yesterday, then do 8 today. Who 47 if the guy next to you did 15? It doesn't make a bit of 48 . You are a more fit person today than you were yesterday. Your own 49 is all you need.   If you 50 to a slightly higher standard of yourself every day, you will always be at the top of your game. 31. A. patient B. strict C. content D. concerned 32. A. stronger B. better C. lazier D. wiser 33. A. inside B. outside C. out D. up 34. A. useful B. careful C. accurate D. powerful 35. A. end B. best C. side D. convenience 36. A. Whether B. Either C. Once D. If 37. A. satisfied B. inspired C. busy D. lazy 38. A. nothing B. fun C. sure D. success 39. A. really B. exactly C. fully D. actually 40. A. within B. by C. for D. to 41. True self-confidence isn't an overnight acquisition. It takes dedication to realize you are a good human being that is worthy of respect and love. Recognize your insecurities What does that voice in the back of your mind say? Why do you feel uncomfortable or ashamed of yourself? This could be anything from regrets to friends at school or negative experience. Whatever is making you feel unworthy, or ashamed, identify it, give it a name, and write it down. You can also tear these written pieces to start feeling positive on those points. Get rid of insecurities gradually Each day you should weaken it. There's no quick fix. Get to the root of the problem; focus on it and understand that you need to resolve each issue before you can move on. Check if it is an old past emotion and if it is really still relevant or applicable in your life today. And that does not mean you have to get rid of whatever makes you feel bad (many times, you simply can't). You need to learn to accept yourself, your past, your circumstances as they are, without necessarily thinking of them as “bad”. Identify your successes Everyone is good at something, so discover the things at which you do extremely well, then focus on your talents. Give yourself permission to be proud of them. Give yourself credit for your successes. Inferiority (自卑) is a state of mind in which you've declared yourself a victim. Do not allow yourself to be victimized. Be Positive Avoid self-pity, or the pity and sympathy of others. Never allow others to make you feel inferior—they can only do so if you let them. If you continue to dislike and look down upon yourself, others are going to do and believe likewise. Instead, speak in a positive way about yourself, about your future, and about your progress. Do not be afraid to show your strengths and qualities to others. By doing so, you strengthen those ideas in your mind and encourage your growth in a positive direction. Apply “facial feedback theory” Studies surrounding what’s called the "facial feedback theory" suggest that the expressions on your face can actually encourage your brain to express certain emotions. So look in the mirror and smile every day, and you might feel happier with yourself and more confident in the long run. Help others When you know you’re of help to the people around you, and are making a positive difference in other people’s lives (even if it's just being kinder to the person who serves you coffee in the morning), you'll know that you are a positive force in the world—which will boost yourself confidence. Now, dear friends, will you let confidence keep you company? Be confident, and accomplishing your goals will be just around the corner. She grew up on the beach and began competing as a swimmer at the age of six, when her uncle entered her in a race. For the next 19 years, she continued as a competitive swimmer. On July 4, 1952, at the age of 34, Chadwick attempted to become the first woman to swim 21 miles across the Catalina Channel, from a port on the California coast. That day the ocean was ice cold, the fog was so thick that she could hardly see the support boats that followed her, and sharks swam around her. Several times, her support crew used guns to drive away the sharks. While Americans watched on televisions, her mother and her trainer, who were in one of the support boats, encouraged her to keep going. However, after 15 hours and 55 minutes, with only a half mile to go, she felt that she couldn’t go on, and begged to be taken out of the water. Later, Chadwick told a reporter, “Look, I’m not excusing myself, but if I had seen land I know, I could have made it.” The fog had made her unable to see her swimming goal, and it made her feel she was getting nowhere. Two months later, she tried again. Although the fog was still heavy, yet this time she made it with the goal rooted in her mind. She knew behind the fog was the land she pursued. (D) The Luck of the Irish Look at a map of Britain, and the island on the left is Ireland. It’s a small but beautiful country with a long tradition of folk music. Up until 10 years ago just about the only thing that Ireland was famous for was its specialty black beer. Now Ireland is famous around the world for its music with names like "Kenya","U2" ,"Van Morrison"and more recently "the Corers". "Boyzone", one of the world's top boy bands ,is from Ireland too. What's more,Boyzone member Shane has twin sisters, Adele and Heavy, who are members of "B Witched" The "Boyzone"story is interesting because they were created in 1993 by Dublin nightclub owner John Reynolds. They advertised in newspapers to find members for the group and 300 wannabe pop stars applied! Ronan, who was just 17 when he dropped out of school to make his bid for stardom, and Shane, who had been working as trained mechanic in his father's garage when he left to join Boyzone, were both lucky enough to be chosen. The other members are shoe-shop attendant Stephen lately, former mechanic Mike Graham and one-time clothes store assistant Keith Dully. Many people expect bands that have been created by the music industry to produce boring music which doesn't become popular. Even the boys themselves knew they would not easily achieve international pop music success. Boyzone quickly proved that they were more than just pretty faces and have sold millions of records around the world. At the moment ,they are not big stars in America, but they say that will change, when they begin a tour of the United States. Ronan will shortly also start recording as a solo artist. That does not mean the band will spilt yet,but we can expect Boyzone to split sometime in the next 18 months or so.Ronan has also recently become involved as one of the managers of new Irish boy band "West Life" whose song "Swear It Again"has recently been Number 1 in the British charts. 68. Ireland is famous for now. A. its black beer B. its long tradition C. popular music D. its scenery 69. The words “wannabe pop stars” in the third paragraph mean . A. the pops who want to join the band B. the persons who want to become pop stars C. the pop stars who want to become more popular D. the persons who want to be as famous as they are 70. According to the passage, we know that . A. Boy zone will split some day B. Boy zone was successful because it was created by music industry C. The boys in Boy zone were certain that they would be famous one day D. Boy zone are going to perform in the States for Americans love them very much 6
