Happiness is for everyone. You don’t need to care about those people who have beautiful houses with large gardens and swimming pools or those who have nice cars and a lot of money and so on. Why?
Because those who have big houses may often feel lonely and those who have cars may want to walk on the country roads at their free time.
In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it, and when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice a bit of them, you can see that happiness is always around you.
Happiness is not the same as money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also feel you are very happy, because you have something else that can’t be bought with money. When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances to challenge yourself. So you cannot always say you are poor and poor and you have bad luck. As the saying goes, life is like a revolving(旋转的)door. When it does, it also opens. If you take every chance you get, you will be a happy and lucky person.
1. Those who have big houses may often feel ________.
A. happy B. lonely C. free D. excited
2. When you fall down in a PE class, both your teacher and your classmates will ________.
A. laugh at you B. play jokes on you
C. quarrel with you D. help you up
3. What will your friends say to you when you make great progress?
A. Oh, so do I. B. Congratulations.
C. Good luck. D. It’s just soso.
4. Which of the following is this passage about?
A. Bad luck. B. Good luck.
C. Happiness. D. Life.
五、七选五
Choosing the right job is probably one of the most important decisions we have to make in life, and it is frequently one of the hardest decisions we have to make. One important question that you might ask yourself is: How do I get a good job? 1
There are people who can answer an insignificant advertisement in the local paper and land the best job in the world; others write to all sorts of places all over the country, and never seem to get a reply at all. Still others believe that the in person, door-to-door approach is by far the best way to get a job; and then there are those who, through no active decision of their own, just seem to be in the right place at the right time. 2 He used to spend a lot of his free time down by the sea watching the tall ships, but never thinking that he might one day sail one of them. His father was a farmer, and being a sailor could never be anything for the boy but an idle dream. One day, on his usual wandering, he heard the captain of the ship complaining that he could not sail because one member of his crew was sick. Without stopping to think, the lad(少年)offered to take his place. 3
4 If the lad had gone home to ponder(考虑)his decision for a week, he may have missed his chance. It is one thing to be offered an opportunity; it is another thing to take it and use it well. Sometimes we hear stories about people who break all the rules and still seem to land plum jobs(美差).When you go for a job interview or fill out an application, you are expected to say nice things about the company to which you are applying. 5 And within a year this person had become general manger of the company.
A. This story also illustrates the importance of seizing an opportunity when it presents itself.
B. People find jobs in an infinite number of ways.
C. It’s almost impossible to find a good job by answering advertisements in newspapers.
D. Take for example the young man who wanted to be a sailor.
E. But there was one person who landed an excellent job by telling the interviewer all the company’s faults.
F. He spent the rest of his life happily sailing the ships he had always loved.
G. It is very important to seize an opportunity when it presents itself.

Unusual Commute(通勤): the Freezeway
Forget the train and bus: one city in Canada has decided maybe it’s time to stop complaining about the freezing weather. 1 Soon, there will be freezeways for ice-skating commuters.
With an average temperature of -10℃ in the heart of winter, commuting in the Canadian city of Edmonton is not always a walk in the park. 2
To build a road made of ice, the city is considering a plan to flood an 11 km route. 3 Inspired by a comment made in the 1990s by city councilor(议员)Tooker Gomberg to “break the fire hydrants(消防栓)open, flood the streets, and let people skate to work in the winter,” Gibbs became determined to make this a reality.
According to Edmonton’s 2015 Winter Cities Conference, the route would act as a walking and bike path in summer. 4 Gibbs says the long ice corridor would encourage active lifestyles, create sustainable(可持续的)forms of transportation, and provide Edmonton with a much-needed tourist attraction.
5 Councilor Scott McKeen said that the Freezeway could be a great way to take advantage of one of Edmonton’s greatest natural resources—winter.
Not to mention, putting on a pair of skates and going to the office quickly would have to be the best possible way to get to work!
A. To solve this problem, architect student Matthew Gibbs has suggested the Freezeway.
B. Therefore, residents can ice-skate to work, school and other local attractions in winter.
C. Canadians stop thinking winter as a problem and begin to take advantage of it.
D. A number of Edmonton councilors have supported the Freezeway idea.
E. The Freezeway idea shows how to turn a negative into a positive.
F. Instead, it’s time to accept the ice-filled winter streets.
G. While during winter, it would be used as a Freezeway.

五、阅读理解
A newspaper reporter’s job can be very interesting. He meets all types of people and lives quite a busy life. He is on the rush for news all the time; then after several years he may get a desk job, and life becomes a bit more settled. Let’s look at his work a little more closely. In a day he may have to interview the prime minister of a foreign country, and the next day he may be writing about a football match. Sometimes he may be so busy that he has hardly any time to sleep. And at other times he may go on for days looking out for news materials and yet return empty-handed.
In the beginning, a reporter has to cover a very wide field. After the early years he becomes more specialized in his work. For example, he may finally be asked to write only on court cases or politics or sports. Some reporters may become so specialized that they are asked only to write on a special thing: horse racing, for example. In most newspaper houses there is at least one special racing correspondent. Some newspapers have book reviewers. Their job is delightful. They read the latest books and then write reviews on the ones they like. Then there are those who write on films, so they get to see them even before they are shown in the cinema. How lucky, you would say!
A reporter’s job can also be very dangerous. A number of them have died rushing from one assignment to another, and if there is a flood or a riot(暴乱)they may get hurt or even be killed. Three years ago there was a reporter whose camera was smashed by a group of men, because they were angry with him for taking their pictures. Dangerous or not, one thing is certain, and that is, their job is never dull!
1. What does the underlined phrase “on the rush” mean in the passage?
A. On the beach. B. In a hurry. C. On the spot. D. In no time.
2. Reporters who write on films are said to be lucky because they _______.
A. can see the films before most people see them in the cinema
B. can see more film stars
C. can pay less than other people
D. can write anything they like
3. A reporter’s work becomes dangerous when ________.
A. there is a flood or a riot
B. there is an interview with the prime minister
C. there is a football match
D. he is seeing a horror film
4. From the passage we can infer that, to be a good reporter, he must be all of the following EXCEPT ________.
A. brave B. strong C. quick in mind D. well-informed
