Text 10
Rose left school when she was seventeen years old and went to a college for a year to learn to type. She passed her examinations quite well and then went to look for work. She was still living with her parents. A lot of people were looking for typists at that time, so it was not difficult to find interesting work. Rose went to several offices, and then chose one of them. It was near her parents' house. She thought, “I will walk there every morning. I won't go by bus.” She went to the office again and said to the manager, “I want to work here but what will you pay me?” “We will pay you $27 now,” the manager answered, “and $30 in three months.” Rose thought for a few seconds before she answered. Then she said, “All right, then I'll start in three months' time.”
A
All areas of the world face a nurses shortage. But the shortage is most severe in developing countries. Many of their nurses move to the more developed nations for better pay, better working conditions and better chances for career development. For example, nearly 2,000 nurses left the Caribbean between 2002 and 2006.
The Caribbean nations currently have about 1 nurse for every 1,000 people. The ratio (比例) of nurses to population is about 10 times higher in the United States and countries in the European Union (EU). Now, more than 21,000 nurses who trained in the Caribbean are working in the United States, Canada and Britain.
Gaetan Lafortune is an official of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (O. E. C. D) in Paris. He says the nurses shortage also affects industrialized countries. He says, “There is concern in most O. E. C. D. countries that the number of nurses is too small to meet the demand. And what is more worrying is that their concern is sort of growing. ” Mr Lafortune says a large number of nurses are expected to retire within the next 10 years. At the same time, the health care needs of aging populations are expected to grow, intensifying the shortage of nurses.
Gaetan Lafortune said, “In the U. S. , for instance, some researchers have found that there may be a shortage of close to a million nurses by 2022. ” The United States is 1 of the 21 countries in the O. C. E. D. Gaetan Lafortune says in the recent years many of the countries increased their efforts to hire foreign nurses. As a result of that, O. E. C. D. countries were mainly exporting their shortage problem to countries that may have an even greater need for these nurses.
21.What will be the main causes of the global nurses shortage in the next 10 years?
a. The demand for nurses will decrease.
b. Many nurses will be too old to work.
c. Many rich countries will hire more foreign nurses.
d. Nurses are often looked down upon.
e. Aging populations will increase rapidly
A. a and b B. b and c
C. b and e D. c and d
Lafortune says a large number of nurses are expected to retire within the next 10 years. At the same time, the health care needs of aging populations are expected to grow, intensifying the shortage of nurses.”
22.The underlined word “intensify” in Para. 3 means “________”.
A. strengthen B. neglect
C. reduce D. cause
23.We know from this text that America and the EU countries ________.
A. refuse to offer equal pay to foreign nurses
B. have at least one nurse out of 100 people
C. don't like to train nurses of their own countries
D. have more serious nursing problems than the Caribbean nations
24.What does the text mainly tell us?
A. Nursing is no longer a worthwhile profession in most countries.
B. The different attitudes towards nursing in different countries.
C. Nurses shortage will result in serious consequences.
D. The health care industry needs more nurses.
B
Every parent knows it's important to have good communication with their teens — actual conversations with plenty of back and forth. The problem, of course, is that most teenagers don't like to talk to their parents. Usually, we're at fault. We can't just let them talk. There are far too many important life lessons to impart (传授).
It might go something like this: Jacques and his father are riding in the car. Out of the blue Jacques starts talking. I've been thinking. I don't know, maybe I'm going to become an airplane pilot. Or maybe I'll work at Burger Barn and always live at home with you and mom. Or maybe ...”
“You know, Jacques, you're going to have to start thinking seriously about what you want to do. You're going to be out of high school in a couple of years.”
“What is his problem?” Jacques says to himself. “I was trying to tell him what I'm thinking about, but all he wants to do is to give me another lecture.”
Jacques and his father sit without speaking for the rest of the drive.
Our comments worries, warnings and lessons — they seem important. We want to guide our kids down the best possible path. And if we hear something from them that seems to beg for our important guidance, how can we not give it? But often the only thing that our advice accomplishes is to kill the conversation.
When they talk freely, it is like a tiny flame that we should try to keep alive, fanning it gently to keep it going. When they were little kids, we couldn't stop them talking, but not much skill is required to get a second grader to tell you about his day.
The solution seems so simple. All you have to do is shut up. Stick to innocuous comments like, “You think so?” or “Really?” or repeat a brief version of what you said.
25.What does the author intend to say in the passage?
A. Shut your mouth and listen to your teens.
B. Make a good plan for your child in time.
C. Learn how to teach your child to communicate.
D. Make proper comments on your child's behaviour.
26.The author takes Jacques and his father as an example ________.
A. to show parents are at fault when talking with kids
B. to imply Jacques's father isn't a good father.
C. to indicate communication is hard to go on
D. to show Jacques' father is absorbed in driving
答案与解析 A 依据第一段“Usually, we're at fault. We can't just let them talk.”和其次段中“It might go something like this:Jacques and his father are riding in the car. Out of the blue Jacques starts talking.” A项正确。
27.If you let your child talk freely, ________.
A. your advice will stop your conversation
B. your child will show his soul to you
C. your worries will disappear forever
D. your child will become independent
28.What does the underlined word “innocuous” in the passage mean?
A. Harmless B. Impolite
C. Unbelievable D. Helpful
C
Cheating can happen in a lot of different ways. When people cheat, it's not fair to other people, like the kids who studied for the test or who were the true winners of a game.
Many people like the action of cheating. It makes difficult things seem easy, like getting all the right answers on the test. But it doesn't solve the problem of not knowing the material and it won't help on the next test—unless the person cheats again.
Some people lose respect for cheaters and think less of them. The cheaters themselves may feel bad because they know they are not really earning that good grade. And, if they get caught cheating, they will be in trouble at school, and maybe at home, too.
Some kids cheat because they're busy or lazy and they want to get good grades without spending the time studying. Other kids might feel like they can't pass the test without cheating. Even when there seems to be a “good reason” for cheating, cheating isn't a good idea.
If you were sick or upset about something the night before and couldn't study, it would be better to talk with the teacher about this. And if you don't have enough time to study for a test because of swim practice, you need to talk with your parents about how to balance swimming and school.
A kid who thinks cheating is the only way to pass a test needs to talk with the teacher and his or her parents so they can find some solutions (解决方法) together. Talking about these problems and working them out will feel better than cheating.
29.Some students like cheating mainly because________.
A. the material in the test is very difficult
B. they want to do better than the others
C. cheating can make hard things seem very easy
D. they have little time to study their lessons
