Mrs. Jenkins went to see her doctor one day, because her heart was giving her trouble.
The doctor listened to her heart carefully and did a few other things. Then he said, “Well, Mrs. Jenkins, stop smoking, and then you'll be all right again.”
“But doctor,”answered Mrs. Jenkins quickly,“I've never smoked. I don't like smoking.”
“Oh,well,”said the doctor,“then don't drink any wine.”
“But I don't drink wine,”answered Mrs. Jenkins at once.
“Stop drinking tea and coffee then,”the doctor said to her.
“I only drink water,”answered Mrs. Jenkins.“I don't like tea or coffee.”
The doctor thought for a few seconds and then said, “Well, how about potatoes?”
“Yes, I like them very much,”answered Mrs. Jenkins.
“All right, then stop eating those,”said the doctor as he got up to say goodbye to Mrs. Jenkins.

China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, I've found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it's the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors — silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want.
It's fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks (人行道). Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can't provide.
Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.
My first ride home was orderly (守秩序的). To be safe, I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn't want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully.
Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.
I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive.

Museums have changed. They are no longer places that one“should” go but now they are places to enjoy.
At a science museum in Canada, you can feel your hair stand on end as harmless electricity passes through your body. At the Children's Museum in New York, you can play an African drum. There are no“Do Not Touch” signs in some other museums in the USA.
More and more museum directors have realized that people learn best when they can become part of what they are seeing. In many science museums, the visitors are encouraged to touch, listen, operate and experiment so as to discover scientific rules for themselves.
The purpose is not only to provide fun, but also help people feel at home in the world of science. If people don't understand science, they will be afraid of it; and if they are afraid of science, they will not make the best use of it.
One cause of all these changes is the increase in wealth and spare time. Another cause is the growing number of young people in the population. Many of them are college students or college graduates. They see things in a new and different way. They want art that they can take part in. The same is true of science and history.
The old museums have been changing and the government is encouraging the building of new, modern museums. In the United States and Canada, there are more than 6,000 museums, almost twice as many as there were 25 years ago.
29.The directors of the museums have realized________.
A. the importance of scientific rules
B. people learn best when they look at something
C. visitors prefer to learn from museums
D. the museum needs changes
答案与解析 D 由第三段的“More and more museum directors have realized that people learn best when they can become part of what they are seeing.”可知选D项。
30.The growing population of young people caused the changes in museums because ________.
A. many of them hope to take part
B. many of them have a new way of thinking
C. many of them are better educated
D. All of the above.
答案与解析 D 由倒数其次段可知。
31.How many museums or so were there in the United States and Canada 25 years ago?
A. 3,500. B. 2,000.
C. 3,000. D. 6,000.
答案与解析 C 由最终一句可知,用6,000除以2则得出答案。
D
English is a language spoken all around the world. There are more than 42 counties where the majority of the people speak English. Most native speakers of English are found in the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand. In total, for more than 375 million people, English is their mother tongue.
An equal number of people learn English as a second language. These people will perhaps speak the language of their own county at home with their family, but the language of the government, schools, newspapers and TV is English. This situation is found in countries such as India, Pakistan, Nigeria and the Philippines.
However, the number of people who learn English as a foreign language is more than 750 million. Everywhere in the world children go to school. In China students learn English at school as a foreign language, except for those in Hong Kong, where many people speak English as a first or a second language.
In only fifty years, English has developed into the language most widely spoken and used in the world. English is the work
