A
Australia is famous for its beautiful beaches. And Australian people love swimming and going to the beach. But it wasn't always that way.
When Europeans first reached Australia, the only people here who were good at swimming were the Aboriginal people (土著人). The Europeans came from where it was too cold to swim. Also some people worried that they would get sick if they wet their whole bodies. So most of them could not swim.
However the warm weather of Australia soon made them think differently about swimming. At first, only men swam. They swam naked — there were no women to see them.
By the 1880's and 90's, visiting the beach was very popular and a lot of people went there, especially in warm weather. People believed they should be physically modest (端庄的) — they covered most of their body so it would not be seen by the opposite sex. Special bathing clothes were designed for women. These clothes used a lot of cloth and were very heavy when wet, making it difficult to swim.
The government decided to stop men swimming naked. It passed a law which doesn't allow bathing between 6 a．m. and 7 p．m. Many people were against this law and wrote letters to the government asking it to change the law. In 1903, the law changed; people could swim in the daytime, but they had to wear necktoknee clothes.
As time passed, swimming clothes became smaller and easier to use. However, most people cover their bodies more than they did ten years ago — not because they think swimming naked is not modest — but to protect their skin from the harmful rays of the sun.

An experience in Africa is not complete without visiting some of their wildlife protection areas. While in South Africa, be sure to tour the Cheetah (猎豹) Center.
The Cheetah Center is about a 50 minute drive from Johannesburg (约翰内斯堡), a city in Northeastern South Africa whether driving there by private car, bus，or taxi. Once at the Center, a tour guide drives visitors all around the park in a large truck. The tour lasts about 3 hours and you can join a group or take a private tour there to enjoy the park. You must call and book in advance. You are expected to pay about 35 US dollars for the basic group tour. Tours are available in the morning or afternoon on most days.
Keep in mind children under the age of 6 are not allowed on the tour. One tour guide explained that once a cheetah jumped up at the truck trying to attack a child — unsuccessful, of course. The cheetah chooses smaller prey such as the hares and game birds. So if you are over 5 feet tall, you are fairly safe as the cheetah thinks it too much work to try to bring you down.
One of the tour guides explained how the Center brings up the animals and they sell the animals to zoos and wildlife protection areas. They work hard to keep and continue the genetic diversity (多样性) in the cheetah and wild dog populations.
