Text 10 Many young Americans do not live with their families, but in apartment blocks where everyone is more or less of the same age. Young people often move away from their home into shared apartments when they leave school. They do their own cooking and cleaning and go to the family home occasionally for the weekend. Young married couples may move to new places where most people have young children. When they have more money, they may move to another place, where the houses are bigger. Senior citizens often do not live with their grownup children. Many live in homes for the elderly. Some live in special communities built for them, where there are no young children and the atmosphere is quiet. A An upper class British lady once declared: “Anyone_seen_on_a_bus_after_the_age_of_30_has_been_a_failure_in_life.”This may sound arrogant (傲慢) and ignorant. Unfortunately, there are still people thinking that way. Some wealthy folk in the West look down on buses and boast about how many years it has been since they last travelled by one. How sad is that? Our roads are packed with cars and the air is full of the pollution they emit. But still, many car users are unwillingly to get on a bus or a bike or a train to take themselves to work. It's convenient to drive, they'll say. Buses are so unreliable, they'll claim. And trains are expensive — at least in the UK. It's an attitude which may have to change. It doesn't make sense to drive a car in a city where there's a public transport system. Also, these rush hour commuters (来回上班者) usually travel alone. As a result, transport authorities in the UK are looking at solutions to city center congestion (拥堵). One is to increase the number of parking spaces at outoftown railway stations. More motorists can then leave their cars and travel into the city by train. Light rail or tramways are another environmentally friendly solution. Many cities across Europe have had light rail or tramway systems. The subway in London is used by everyone, rich and poor. It's the quickest way of getting around the city, whatever your bank balance. And then there are the cycle hire plans you find in many modern cities. In London and Paris, you can hire a bike by the hour to get you where you need to go. Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, is often pictured cycling to work. David Cameron, the British prime minister, cycled to the House of Commons before he became leader. 21.What's the implied meaning of the underlined sentence in the first paragraph? A. If a person above 30 can travel on a bus, he was successful. B. If a person above 30 cannot travel on a bus, he has failed in his life. C. If you are middleaged and don't have a car, then you are a loser. D. If the middleaged often travel by bus, they will be losers. 22.Which of the following is NOT the reason why some car users are unwilling to change their way of transport? A. It's convenient to drive around the city. B. They cannot count on buses. C. It costs them much money to take trains. D. Driving cars has little effect on environment. 23.How many solutions to congestion have been mentioned in the article? A. 3. B. 4. C. 5. D. 6. 24.What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Cycling to work grows in popularity in the UK. B. David Cameron keeps driving to work all the time. C. Prime Minister is a good example in the campaign. D. More people are taking different methods to better the environment. B Every day at 8:00, Lucy was served breakfast in bed by Guido, her chef. Next came a quick fitness session with Olga, her personal trainer. Lars, her secretary, would be waiting in the study and, at 10:00, Lucy would be there. At noon, Lucy would drive to meet her old friends. As Lucy returned home at 4:55 p.m., Olga would have already set up the massage (按摩) table. However, today Lucy planned to take her diamond necklace to Manhattan for cleaning. She threw it into her purse and left. On the way, she sensed she was being followed. Then, as she joined the shoppers,Lucy felt a pull. Within a splitsecond, a man on inline skates sailed past her, grabbing her purse. Lucy went to the police station and returned home an hour later than usual. The ice in the welcomehome cocktail (鸡尾酒) Lars had mixed had already melted. Olga hurriedly set up the massage table and mixed the oils. Two hours later, Lucy lay in bed, lost in thought. “It was an inside job.” The person obviously knew I was carrying that necklace and followed me. “Lars has family in Manhattan. It was she who advised me to have my necklace cleaned.” “Guido's cousin owns an inline skating store in Manhattan.” “I always arrived home at 4:55 and Olga was always ready with the table set up and the oils ready. But today, Olga didn't prepare for the massage until after I walked through the door. Why? Because she knew I would be late. Realizing that I would be taking the necklace to Manhattan without security precautions (防范), Olga telephoned her Manhattan boyfriend who lay in wait, ready to skate and rob.” And soon Olga and her boyfriend were both arrested. 25.We can infer from the first paragraph that Lucy lived a(n) ________ life. At 7:55. 27.The underlined word “job” in Para.6 is closest in meaning to ________. A. work B. task C. crime D. problem 28.Who didn't Lucy suspect of being involved in the robbery? A. Her chef. B. Her friends. C. Her trainer. D. Her secretary. C Some students prefer a parttime job after class to earn some money and improve their working and communication abilities.
