语 篇 提 能 阅读理解 A Every March, the country celebrates the achievements of women in American history. Even though these achievements go back a long way, most schools didn't start paying attention to women pioneers and their achievements until recently. How did this change come about? The answer lies in the history books, of course! International Women's Day is born On March 19, 1911, a German woman named Klara Zetkin organized the very first International Women's Day. At first, this yearly event gave attention to peace (in an effort to end World War I) as well as women's rights. Over the years, however, interest in International Women's Day reduced until the 1960s, when the women's movement caused women to think why they weren't included in the history books. National Women's History Week is celebrated In 1978, Women's History Week was started to encourage the teaching of women's history. School officials picked the week of March 8 to include International Women's Day. It was so popular that, in 1981, the US government passed a law making the week a celebration for the entire country. In 1987, a group of women asked the government to expand (扩大) the celebration. That same year, the government announced the entire month of March National Women's History Month. ________ Last year, the firstever national women's history museum opened in Dallas, Texas. The museum brings to life the stories and achievements of 3,000 amazing American women. Besides, the museum runs Girlstart, a program that encourages young women to consider working in math, science and computer technology. These fields have been traditionally controlled by men. 1.What can we learn from the second paragraph? A. Women's rights were not recognized until the 1960s. B. The shooter was Adam Lanza, 20, who was found dead inside Sandy Hook Elementary School. The incident — among the worst school shootings in U.S. history — is the latest in a series of mass shootings in the U.S. this year, including Tuesday's shooting by a gunman at a Portland, Ore. shopping mall that left two dead and one wounded. Three things were found — a Glock and a SigSauer,_inside the school, and a 223caliber gun in the back of a car. An official said the guns had been legally bought and registered by the shooter's 52yearold mother, Nancy Lanza. Ryan Lanza, the shooter's 24yearold brother, was questioned and said Adam was believed to suffer from a personality disorder. Police said the shootings took place in two rooms in one section of the school building, including a kindergarten classroom. As the shooting erupted, quickthinking teachers hid some students in closets and bathrooms, while others rounded up students and took them out of the building secretly. Police said 18 of the children and six adults died at the school. Two other children were pronounced dead after they were taken to local hospitals. One wounded was hospitalized.
