M: It was noisy, as usual.
Text 2
W: There you are finally. We'd better get moving if we expect to get a seat. The lecture starts in fifteen minutes and we've still got a long walk ahead of us.
M: These things never start on time, and anyway, I don't think it will be that crowded.
Text 3
W: How do you want it, sir?
M: Just tidy it up, please.
W: Would you like your hair washed?
M: No, thanks. Just leave it as it is.
Text 4
M: Is this chair the one advertised on TV?
W: Yes, it is on sale. It originally costs $15, and now it is $12. If you buy two, we'll knock the price off by 5%.
Text 5
M: How did you do in your Chinese Studies class?
W: The class was great and I learned a lot, but Professor Lee only gave me a “C”.
M: Didn't I tell you he was very strict?
Text 6
M: Shanghai is really a beautiful city. Oh, my God! Sophie, it's already 9:30. We have to get to the airport before 10 o'clock.
W: But where is my camera? I can't find it anywhere. I need it to take pictures while we are in Hangzhou.
M: Come on, you can use mine. The others are waiting for us. Please!
W: But my camera takes better pictures than yours. Oh, maybe I left it somewhere in Beijing.
Text 7
W: So what's your schedule for tomorrow, Dave?
M: Well, first I have to do the accounts on the new computers. Then I'm meeting Tony.
W: I thought you had already finished that.
M: Yeah, but we have to check the final reports.
W: So you won't have any time left?
M: Not until in the evening I am afraid. Do you have anything particular tomorrow evening?
W: Not really. I think I have a lot of time to kill.
M: Well, then, won't you come over to my place to have dinner with me?
W: With pleasure.
M: Let me do the cooking this time.
W: In that case, I will do some shopping tomorrow.
Text 8
W: Hey, Fred.
M: How's it going, Ann?
W: Great. I just finished my last exam for the semester, and now I'm going home to get ready for summer break. What about you?
M: I'll finish my last exam this afternoon. Where are you going this summer?
W: I am going to work on a ship.
M: Sounds good. I'll be working nearby on the coast.
W: What are you planning to do on the coast?
M: My uncle owns a restaurant there, so I'll be working as a waiter at night. I have to save money for the next school year. Maybe we can get together this summer since we'll be staying near each other.
W: That sounds good. I'll be working on a ship during July, and I won't return to shore for the entire month. But in June and later in August I'll be working in the lab and I could drive up and see you.
M: OK. Call me before you leave tomorrow.

Text 10
M: “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” But is healthy living really that simple? Well, here are some of my tips for healthy living. The most important thing of all in keeping good health is eating a nutritious diet. Remember, eating well does not mean giving up the foods you love; it means choosing lower fat foods more often. Keep it in mind that artificially produced vitamins are not as nutritional as the vitamins we get from normal foods. So, when it comes to vitamins, don't overdo it. Secondly, a good night sleep is necessary for good health. Another point in maintaining health is daily exercise. Now, exercise is something many people think they don't have time for. But it only takes 30 minutes a day. Next, stay away from cigarettes and don't overdo drinking. Finally, take time every day to do something you enjoy, whether it's reading a good book, gardening, or just talking to a friend. Remember: good health means good living, I'm Dr. Graham Johnson, thank you!
其次部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
When I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and escape to the city. We lived on a farm and, in the winter especially, we were quite cut off from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to the capital. However, I soon discovered that city life has its problems too.
One big disadvantage is money — it costs so much to go out, not to mention basics like food and housing. Another disadvantage is pollution. I suffer from asthma (哮喘), and at times the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of travelling round. Although I have a car, I seldom use it because of the traffic jams. One choice is to go by bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.
Of course there are advantages. First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever your tastes in culture or entertainment (消遣活动). Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprising — and, what is more, shops are often only a short walk away.
Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is, when you are in your teens (十几岁) or twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem preferable. I certainly hope to move back there soon.

The concept of peace is a very important one in cultures all over the world. Think about how we greet people. In some languages, the phrases for greetings contain the word for peace. In some cultures we greet people by shaking hands or with another gesture to show that we are not carrying weapons — that we come in peace. And there are certain symbols which people in very different cultures recognise as representing peace. Let's look at the origins of a few of them.
The dove
The dove has been a symbol of peace for thousands of years in many different cultures. In ancient Greek mythology (神话) it was a symbol of love and the renewal of life. In ancient Japan a dove carrying a sword symbolized the end of war.
There was a tradition in Europe that if a dove flew around a house where someone was dying then their soul would be at peace. And there are legends (传奇) which say that the devil (鬼) can turn himself into any bird except for a dove. But it was Pablo Picasso who made the dove a modern symbol of peace when he used it on a poster (海报) for the World Peace Congress in 1949.
The rainbow
The rainbow is another ancient and universal symbol, often representing the connection between human beings and their gods. In Greek mythology it was associated with Iris, the goddess who brought messages from the gods on Mount Olympus. In Scandinavian mythology the earth. In the Bible a rainbow showed Noah that the Biblical flood was finally over, and that God had forgiven his people. In the Chinese tradition, the rainbow is a common symbol for marriage because the colours represent the union of yin and yang. Nowadays the rainbow is used by many popular movements for peace and a better world in the future and promising sunshine after the rain.
The olive branch
The olive tree has always been a valuable source of food and oil. In Greek mythology, the goddess Athene gave the olive tree to the people of Athens who showed their gratitude by naming the city after her. But no one knows for sure when or why it began to symbolise peace. There is probably a connection with ancient Greece. Wars between states were suspended (中止) during the Olympic Games, and the winners were given crowns (花冠) of olive branches. The symbolism may come from the fact that the olive tree takes a long time to produce fruit, so olives could only be cultivated (培育) successfully in long periods of peace. Whatever the history, the olive branch is a part of many modern flags symbolizing peace and unity. One wellknown example is the United Nations symbol.

I travel a lot, and I find out different “styles”(风格) of directions every time I ask “How can I get to the post office?”
Foreign tourists are often confused (困惑) in Japan because most streets there don't have names; in Japan, people use landmarks (地标) in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”
In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat; in many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.”
People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map;they measure distance in time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “it's about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don't know.
It's true that a person doesn't know the answer to your question sometimes. What happens in such
