People have strange ideas about food. For example, tomato is a kind of very delicious vegetable. It is one of useful plants that can be prepared in many ways. It has rich nutrition (养分) and vitamin in it. But in the 18th century, Americans never ate tomatoes. They grew them in their gardens because tomato plants are so pretty. But they thought the vegetable was poisonous (有毒的). They called tomatoes “poison apples”.
President Thomas Jefferson, however, knew that tomatoes were good to eat. He was a learned man. He had been to Paris, where he learned to love the taste of tomatoes. He grew many kinds of tomatoes in his garden. The President taught his cook a way for a cream of tomato soup. This beautiful pink soup was served at the President party. The guests thought the soup tasted really good. They never thought their president would serve his honored guests poison apples. Jefferson never spoke to his honored guests about the fact.

B
All right! Enough cookies, cola, and chips! It seems that junk food is all that the children want to eat these days. Television controls their tastes. The kids see wellknown people eating potato chips, candy and other processed food, and they want to be like their heroes. How do they do it? They eat the same food. I wish there were more characters like old Popeye, the sailor, who ate spinach (菠菜) and not French fries.
Now I don't expect my children to eat healthy food because I like brown rice (糙米), beans, and fresh vegetables. I'm glad to cook traditional meals of meat and potatoes for them. I really can't be too upset with the kids because most adults aren't careful about what they eat.
The other night, my wife and I went to a party where there was plenty to drink but very little for us to eat. They served hot dogs, with all those preservatives, and hamburgers were filled with chemicals so that they looked better. Besides the meat, they had sugarfilled cookies and cake, and of course, chips. I don't want the world to change because of me, but I think that people should realize that there are alternatives to eating meat. They always tell me that I probably don't get my essential proteins. I feel better than ever and I'm sure that it's because I'm a vegetarian. I would really like to see more television advertisements which show the benefits of good, healthy and natural food.
6.According to the passage, it seems that________.
A. the children like to have fried chicken only
B. the kids prefer to have cold drinks but not junk food
C. canned food is the only one that the kids enjoy most
D. the children like nothing better than junk food: cookies and chips
答案与解析 D 从第一段第三句说“现在的孩子们宠爱吃的好像都是垃圾食品”,这里所说的垃圾食品指的是其次句中的曲奇饼、可乐和油炸土豆片等。
7.The writer________.
A.required rich food
B. gave an example of having junk food frequently
C. complained about the food the party had served
D. suspected (怀疑) both the adults and the children to be healthy
8.Hamburgers look better________.
A.but taste bad
B. because they are treated with chemicals
C. so the writer prefers them to hot dogs
D. and the writer expects the children to eat them
答案与解析 B 依据其次段第五句的内容“汉堡包中加了化学制剂以使其外表美观”可知选项B符合该句的含义。
9.Which of the following is NOT true?
A.Television influences children's food choice.
B. The writer is not single and definitely he eats meat.
C. Though the writer is a vegetarian, he feels very healthy.
D. It is certain that brown ice, beans and spinach are not junk food.
答案与解析 B 选项A与第一段第四句相符;选项C与其次段倒数其次句相符;作者所说的劣质食品指的是曲奇饼和油炸土豆片,所以选项D也与原文相符。只有选项B与原文不符。
