I was a new teacher, and I gave an honest account of the students‘ work. In Simon’s case, the grades were awfully low. He couldn’t read his own handwriting. But he was a bright student. He discussed adult subjects with nearly adult comprehension. His work in no way reflected his abiities . So when Simon’s mother entered the room, my palms(手掌心) were sweating. I was completely unprepared for her kisses on both my cheeks.“I came to thank you,” she said, surprising me beyond speech. Beacause of me, Simon had become a different person. He talked of how he loved me, he had began to make friends, and for the first time in his twelve years, he had recently spent an afternoon at a friend’s house. She wanted to tell me how grateful she was for the self-respect I had developed in her son. She kissed me again and left. I sat, stunned , for about half an hour, wondering what had just happened. How did I make such a life changing difference to that boy without even knowing it? What I finally came to remember was one day, several months before, when some students were giving reports in the front of the class, Jeanne spoke silently, and to encourage her to raise her voice, I had said, “Speak up. Simon is the expert on this. He is the only one you have to convince, and he can’t hear you in the back of the room.”That was it. From that day on, Simon had sat up straighter, paid more attention, smiled more, and became happy. And it was all because he happened to be the last kid in the last row. The boy who most needed praise was the one who took the last seat that day. It taught me the most valuable lesson over the years of my teaching career, and I’m thankful that it came early and positively. A small kindness can indeed make a difference. 1. We can infer that when Simon’s mother entered the room, the writer felt . A.satisfied B.nervous C.happy D.surprised 2. Why did Simon’s mother come to visit her son’s teacher? A. Because she worried about her son’s poor work. B. Because she wanted to show her gratitude to the teacher. C. Because Simon asked her to do so. D. Because she wanted to know her son’s performance in the school. 3. What the teacher said in paragraph 3 is intended to . A. encourage Jeanne to speak louder B. encourage Simon to work hard C. ask Jeanne to convince Simon D. tell the students that Simon was expert on that. 4. The purpose of the passage is to . A. tell the story of simon B. B.tell teachers how to be kind to students C.advise the readers to be kind to others D.share a valuable lesson with readers B(2015·惠州高考模拟) Recently I have discovered it’s often easier for me to do something every day than to do it just some days. I post to my blog six days a week. I take notes every day. I write in my one-sentence journal every day. Many people have told me that they find it easier to exercise when they exercise every day. If I try to do something just four days a week, I spend a lot of time arguing with myself: Is today the day, or is it tomorrow, or the next day Does the week start on Sunday or Monday If you do something every day, you tend to fall into a routine. Routine has a bad reputation for lacking excitement. It’s true that novelty and challenge bring happiness and that people who break their routines, try new things, and go to new places are happier, but I think that some routine activities also bring happiness. The pleasure of doing the same thing, in the same way, every day, shouldn’t be overlooked. By repeating, you can find happiness in activities like doing dishes or sweeping the floor as well as in your beloved morning coffee-and-news routines. Two geniuses whom I know of also wrote about the power of doing something every day. Andy Warhol wrote, “Either once only, or every day. If you do something once it’s exciting, and if you do it every day it’s exciting. But if you do it, say, twice or just almost every day, it’s not good any more. ” Gertrude Stein made a similar point, “Anything one does every day is important and anywhere one lives is interesting and beautiful.” So if there’s something that you wish you did more regularly, try doing it every day; if you do something every day, take great pleasure in it. 5. In the first paragraph, what does the author try to tell us? A. It’s easier to do the same thing every day. B. It’s important to do the same thing every day.  C. He has a good habit of following routines. D. He enjoys the habit of following routines. 6. People usually tend to break their routines because they________. A. hope to have a better reputation  B. would like to get rid of the old habit C. want to have fun and excitement  D. are willing to face new challenges 7. Which of the following statements does Andy Warhol probably agree to? A. Doing something that is exciting.  B. Doing something almost every day. C. Doing something every day, not only once.  D. Doing something every day or only once. 8. Which can be the best title of the passage? A. A Way To Form A Habit  B. Do Anything Every Day C. Repeat Regularly  D. Power Of Everyday Repetition C(2015·惠州高考模拟) Playing the piano may seem like nothing special to you, but what about playing it on fruits instead of piano keys? Lin Hai, a 24-year-old graduate, did exactly that, as he made an electronic board by himself. Wearing thick glasses and a simple T-shirt, Lin looks no different to other engineering students. But under his plain appearance lies a true geek(极客)heart. When Lin was little, he loved disassembling things to look at how they work. Even though he often failed at putting them back together, his curiosity was never satisfied and he laid hands on everything, except computers. “My parents told me not to disassemble computers because they’re expensive, so I researched the software instead,” says Lin. When he went to university, Lin chose a subject that was related to engineering and programming.  Lin is a typical geek who often spends days in the laboratory inventing new things. His most successful invention is an electronic board he calls “Crazyer”, the one that turns bananas into piano keys. Lin’s Crazyer electronic board was inspired by a similar device built by two PhD students at MIT. Their device is called Makey Makey, which turns everyday objects into touchpads. Having seen a video, Lin was so impressed by the device that he searched for its website in the hope of buying one. But he found it’s not for sale. For most people, the story would have ended there. But for Lin, it was about to begin: “Why not make my own Makey Makey?” he thought. So he studied the video and website, trying to figure out how it worked. “I found that the mechanism Makey Makey is based on what was similar to that of the electronic lock I built before.” says Lin.    From watching the video to building an electronic board and writing a program for it, Lin spent an entire month bringing Crazyer to life. His hard work paid off. With the money he earns from selling Crazyer, Lin can give back to society. Lin has helped many disabled people by building customized Crazyer boards for them. Another benefit is that the money he earns can support Lin in inventing new things. Lin’s geek spirit is always striving toward new goals. 9. Which of the following has the closest meaning to the underlined word “disassemble”? A. look through B. search into C. take apart D. focus on 10. From the passage, we can know that . A. “Crazyer” is the most successful invention in Lin’s school. B. Lin got inspiration for inventing “Crazyer” from others. C. “Crazyer” works in the same way as Makey Makey. D. Lin copied the idea of two PhD students at MIT. 11. What can be inferred from the passage? A. Lin’s invention did good to himself as well as others. B. Lin made a lot of money from selling his invention. C. Lin will stop inventing new things in the future. D. Lin’s invention “Crazyer” is designed for disabled people. D(2014·湖北高考) London’s newest skyscraper (摩天大楼)is called the Shard and it cost about 430 million pounds to build. At a height of almost 310 metres, it is the tallest building in Europe. The Shard has completely changed the appearance of London. However, not everyone thinks that it is a change for the better. The Shard was designed by the famous Italian architect Renzo Piano. When he began designing the Shard for London, Piano wanted a very tall building that looked like a spire (尖顶)• He wanted the glass surfaces to reflect the sky and the city. The sides of the building aren’t regular. So the building has an unusual shape. It looks like a very thin, sharp piece of broken glass. And that is how the building got the name: the Shard. Piano says that the spire shape of the Shard is part of a great London tradition. The shape reminds him of the spires of the churches of London or the tall masts (桅杆)of the ships that were once on the river Thames. The Shard has 87 floors. At the top, there is an observatory. At the moment the building is empty, but eventually there will be a five-star hotel. There will also be top quality restaurants, apartments and offices. Before building work began, a lot of people didn’t want the Shard though the plans were approved. Now they are still unhappy about the Shard. Some critics say that such a tall skyscraper might be good in a city like New York, but not in London. They say that the best thing about the Shard is its spire shape. But that is the only thing. There is no decoration, only flat surfaces. The Egyptians did that 4,500 years ago. They also think the Shard is too big for London. It destroys the beauty of the city. Other critics don’t like what the Shard seems to represent. They say that the Shard shows how London is becoming more unequal. Only very rich people can afford to buy the expensive private apartments and stay in the hotel. But the people who live near the Shard are among the poorest in London. So the Shard seems a symbol of the division in society between the very rich and the poor. The Shard now dominates the London skyline. It is not certain, however, that ordinary London citizens will ever accept it as a valuable addition to the city. 12.London’s newest skyscraper is called the Shard because of ______. A. its cost B. its size C. its shape D. its height  13. When he designed the Shard, Piano wanted it to ______. A. change London’s skyline  B. Inherit(继承)London’s tradition  C. imitate the Egyptian style D. attract potential visitors 14. The critics who refer to social division think the Shard ______. A. is only preferred by the rich  B. is intended for wealthy people C. is far away from the poor area D. is popular only with Londoners 15. Which would be the best title for the passage? A. The Shard: Cheers and Claps B. The Shard: Work of a Great Architect C. The Shard: New Symbol of London? D. The Shard: A Change for the Better? 第二节 (共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的四个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 If something that you're doing doesn't challenge you, then it doesn't change you. We all need some normal stress in our lives, after all. 16   So challenge the following limits: 1. Figure out what you're scared of and do it continuously.  If you're a salesman, and you're scared of talking to people personally or over the phone, now, instead of being scared and thinking you’ll fail, spend at least five minutes a day to pick up the phone and make a call. 17  But don't stop on the first try! Eventually, you can look at fear in the eyes and say, "Go on, I'm not scared!" 2.18     Make sure this hobby is not linked to your career; you have to relax and relieve your stress while performing this. Some examples might be cooking, sewing, painting and so on.Apart from helping you challenge yourself, taking a class for your hobby may also give you extra income. 3.Set aside at least nine minutes a day for physic al exercise.   19   A simple 9-minute run around your neighborhood can do wonders for yourself.Exercise can not only help you maintain your regular weight, but also make you feel better about yourself. 4.Travel and allow yourself to be interested in new people. Don't just limit yourself to your fellow travelers - try to connect with the service staff. You never know what kind of people they're going to be. Get out of your house or go online right now to book your class.  20   A. You should do it continuously. B. Someone may hang up on you. C. You don't need to go to the gym. D. Running in the gym may be a better choice. E. Start to travel now and learn to challenge yourself. F. Take a class for a hobby you've been wanting to develop. G. You can never see any improvement if you stick to your comfort zone. Britain and Ireland The British Isles is made up of two large islands: One is called Ireland and the other 21  . Britain, or Great Britain, is the larger of these two islands, and it is 22  into three parts: Scotland, Wales and England.
