The size and shape(外形)of your ears show your character(性格)more than any other part of the face. Other parts of the face change shapes as we get older, but ears do not change their shapes. They only change in size.
Reading people’s character from their ears is a very old science. In the past people thought that a person’s ears with colour was dangerous. They also thought that the shape of the ears showed if a person was musical or not. Today, too, many people believe that the size and shape of the ears help you know if a person is musical.
Ears are all different, and each different thing has a meaning. Next time you look at a person, see if his or her ears are large,medium-size,or small. Look at the lobes(耳垂).Do they stick to the face? Ears that are always red mean that a person may get angry easily. Ears that are always cold and nearly white colour mean that a person has a nervous(神经质)character.

Millions of words have been written about young people in the United States. There are reasons for this great interest in the ideas, feelings, and actions of youth.
Today there are about seven million Americans in colleges and universities. Young persons under twenty —five make up nearly half of the American population. Many of these will soon be in charge of the nation. Naturally their ideas are important to everyone in the country, and it is necessary for old people to understand what they think and feel.
College students today have strong opinions(见解) about right and wrong. They are deeply interested in making a better life for people, especially for the lives of their parents. A teacher from a Western country has recently visited an elementary school in an Eastern country. In one class, she watched sixty young children as they learned to draw a cat. The teacher drew a big O on the blackboard, and the sixty students copied it on their paper. The teacher drew a smaller O on the top of the first O and then put two on top of it. The children drew in the same way. The lesson went on until there were sixty-one similar cats in the classroom. Each student’s cat looked exactly like the one on the board.
The visiting teacher watched the lesson and was greatly surprised. The teaching method was very different from that in her own country. A children’s art lesson in her own country produced a roomful of pictures, and each is quite different from others. Why? What makes this difference? In a classroom in any country, a teacher teaches not only knowledge of history or language. But also the ideas.
In some countries such as the United States and Canada etc, people think highly of individualism----the differences between people. The teachers think it very important to make each student different from others. Educational systems in these countries don’t ask students to memorize dull information. Instead, students are asked to work by themselves and find answers themselves. The students are helped to learn to have their own ideas even at an early age.
But in countries such as China and Japan, the two peoples have similar history and culture. Perhaps because of this, people think highly of group goals rather than individualism. Students in China and Japan often work together and help each other in the classroom, The teachers teach and the students listen. The students are asked to memorize a lot. They have to learn the same textbook. They do the same homework and give the same answers.
There are advantages and disadvantages of both educational systems. For example, one advantage of that in Japan is that students there learn more maths and science than American students by the end of high school. They also study more hours each day and more days each year than Americans. There is , however, a disadvantage. Memorization is an important learning method in Japanese schools, yet many students say that after an exam, they forget much of what they have learned. The advantage of the educational system in America is that students learn to think by themselves. The teaching method makes them be more creative. But there is also a disadvantage. When students leave high school, they haven’t learned as many things in the textbooks as the students in other countries.
The visiting teacher was greatly surprised by ______ in the elementary school.
A. the teacher’s drawing B. the teaching method
C. the sixty-one cats D. the big class
Which of the following looks like the cat on the teacher’s blackboard?
43. In the United States ______ .

D. students are encouraged to learn more by themselves
The writer of this passage thinks that ______ .
A. the teaching method can change the educational systems
B. a teacher should teach something more than the subject
C. American students should be asked to memorize more useful information
D. It would be better for students in Canada and American to learn the same textbook
Which of the following is true? ______ .
A. The educational system in Western countries is better than that in Eastern countries
B. The teaching methods in Eastern countries are better than those in Western countries
