Everyone would like to be a millionaire , a person with a lot of money, but can you imagine having over $30 million and only being 20 years old? Britney Spears from Kentwood, a small town in Louisiana, is only 20 years old. She is a world famous film star with not only $30 million but also a $2 million house in LA. At her young age, she can look after her family financially (经济上) all her life. This year is a big year for Britney. She is now on a 31-day tour of the US and every concert is a sell-out. Her philosophy (人生观) is to take care of the body and relax but always make sure you work hard and have fun.
Spears is not pleased with only touring and selling nearly 40 million records so she decided to step into the movie business and try a bit of acting. She made an appearance in “Austin Power 3” this year and she is filming a teenage light play that will come out in March 2003. In this movie, she has a starring role.

One day, when 12-year-old Sean Redden went to a popular chat room on the Internet, he saw the name of someone he’d never seen there before, Susan Hicks. Her message was “ Would someone help me? I can’t breathe. Help me! I can’t feel my left side.”
At first, Sean thought it was a bad joke and he told his mother Sharon Redden. But she asked, “ It’s not just some game, is it?
The message was not a joke. “ Susan Hicks” was actually 20-year-old Taija Laitinen, a student working late at night at a college library near Helsinki, Finland---almost 7,000 miles away from Sean’s home in Texas. While searching the Internet, she began to feel terrible pain all through her body. The library was empty and the nearest phone was outside in the hallway. She couldn’t move that far because any movement caused the pain to get worse. Then as the pain became worse, she began typing her message for help in the chat room.
“I don’t think it’s a joke, mom,” Sean said. He typed, “ Where are you? The letters appeared, “Finland.” Sean and Sharon couldn’ t believe it. Not knowing what else to do, Sharon called the local police and explained the situation to officer Amy Schmidt. Schmidt told Sharon to try to get the sick girl’s phone number and address.
Meanwhile, the Texas police called the international telephone operator and asked to be connected to the proper agency(机构) in Finland. The Texas police explained the situation and gave Susan’s address to the Finnish operator. When Sean heard that, he typed, “Help is on the way.”
In the few minutes, the library door opened. Doctors and three policemen ran in. Taija turned once more to the computer, “ They are here. Thanks. Bye-bye.”

How to Become Cleverer
Once a boy came to ask a fisherman how to become cleverer, because his mother always called him “foolish boy”.
“That’s easy,” answered the fisherman. “I know one way to make you become cleverer.”
“Really?”
“Of course. It is said a fish head is good for brain. If you eat one, you’ll become cleverer indeed. Pay only three pounds for one fish head.” The boy paid him three pounds and the fisherman cut off a fish head and handed it to him.
A raw fish head is not good—not even for a hungry boy to eat but the boy ate it up in two gulps.
“Do you feel anything?” asked the fisherman.
“Not in my head,” said the boy.
The boy lay on the ground and thought. “One whole fish costs only two pounds. I had paid him three pounds for the fish head. Why couldn’t I have the whole fish for soup, a head for brain and one pound left over?” He jumped up and shouted at the fisherman. “You thief! You are fooling me!” The fisherman laughed, saying, “The fish head works now, you see.”

I think machine power is better than human power because we cannot survive without our daily used machines like bikes, coolers, computers, etc.
By Smith
Johnson
6-May-2008 Yes, it’s very clear that machine power is better than man power. But machine power has its limitations (局限). It cannot survive without electricity and manhandling. If it doesn’t have these two then it is completely useless. So man should not completely depend on machines. One more point is that because of the use of machines man has become lazy. This laziness has brought in many problems like obesity, arthritis (关节炎) and other health problems. But I am not saying that man should completely turn from ma-chine power to man power. He should have a balance of both. Even I can’t think of life without a car, a computer and a cooler.
Sally
9-May-2008 Humans only created the machines. So, human power is greater than machine power. To do the things quickly we created the machines. But machines cannot think. That thinking power beats machine power.
Tina
17-May-2008 But without humans there is no value of any machine. If someone wants to use his machine perfectly then one must have expert labor or man power.
Tommy
19-May-2008 Hi to all, my opinion is that human power is more powerful than machine power, because human beings created the machines. Human brain works more compared to machines.
Mike
20-May-2008 I think human power is better than machine power because even if we travel on foot to near places the money will not be wasted and we can get exercise.
12. Who agrees with Smith generally?
A. Tommy. B. Tina. C. Sally. D. Johnson.
13. According to Johnson, man should ______.
A. keep a balance between human power and machine power
B. completely depend on machine power
C. turn from machine power to man power completely
D. live a life without a car, a computer or a cooler
14. Sally thinks that human power is better than machine power because ______.
A. machines are useless without electricity
B. machine power can make people become lazy
C. machines can’t think like human beings
D. human brain can do things quickly
15. Which of the following questions are the speakers talking about in the passage?
A. Will machine power defeat human power?
B. Which is better, human power or machine power?
C. What limitations does machine power have?
D. Will machines think in the future?
