Before I went to university, it seemed to be such a holy place. As for me, it meant glory, respect, freedom, knowledge and a promising future. However, it was not until I entered the university that I realized it was not the whole story. I have learned much from my four years at university, such as hard work, self-control, friendship and teamwork.
University is a highly competitive place. If you don't want to lag behind other students, you have to study very hard. Besides, the pressure of hunting for a desirable job after graduation also forces you to grasp every minute to equip yourself with as much knowledge as possible. Self-control is another thing that I have learned in university. Here, the absence of parents' control and the loose control of the school give me more freedom. In addition, university is vulnerable to social influences. So I have to learn how to control myself. I try to arrange my life properly, which, on the other hand, prevents me from indulging in seeking pleasure, and on the other hand, enables me to enjoy university life.
University life makes me have a deeper understanding of friendship. Friendship has become an important part of my life that I can not live without. Far away from my parents, my friends have become my dearest family members. When I feel lonely, they always sit beside me, let me pour out my secrets to them, and softly comfort me. When I am in trouble and feel helpless, it is my friends who reach out their hands and help me out.
Last but not least, university teaches me the importance of teamwork. There are lots of activities in university that you can not accomplish on your own, but have to rely on your cooperation with other people. Cooperation, in turn, relies on effective communication. Effective communication builds on mutual understanding. Thus, I have to try my best to let my cooperators understand me, just as I do my best to understand them.
In a few months' time, I am going to graduate from university. Looking back into the past four years, I must say that my university life is a worthwhile experience. What I have learned here has made a good preparation for my future life.

Find Which Direction Is South
Do you have a good sense of direction? If not, please take with you a compass. But if you forget to take a compass, you can still find your way.
It’s never a good idea to imagine that the family member who was entrusted(委托)with the job of map-reading actually knows where the family is. You can tell by the slightly confused look on their faces that nothing on the ground seems to match the map. Never mind. The sun is shining and it’s still morning. If you don’t know the exact time, you can still find out where south is,but you’ll need to be patient.
①Find a straight stick and put it in the ground in a place where you can mark its shadow.
②Try to position the stick as vertically(垂直)as you can. You can check this by making a simple plumb line(铅锤线) with a piece of string and weight. You haven’t got any string?OK,use a thread from your clothes with a button tied at the end to act as a weight.
③Mark the end of the shadow cast by the stick.
④Wait approximately half an hour and mark the end of the shadow again.
⑤Keep doing this until you have made several marks.
⑥The mark nearest the stick will represent the shortest shadow, which is east at midday, when the sun is highest in the sky and pointing to the exact south.
⑦Pick a point in the distance along the line between the shortest shadow and the stick.
⑧That point is south of where you are.
⑨Now you can turn the map, like you did before, and find which way you should be travelling.
1. To find the direction,we ought to be patient probably because .
A. it is not easy to find a proper stick B. it is not easy to position the stick
C. it takes hours to make the marks D. it takes about half an hour to make the marks

For those who are tired of doing the laundry, Samsung has found an answer: a washing machine that can tell you when your laundry is done via a smartphone app (application) .
Strange though it may seem—“my wife already does that”was a common response among attendees viewing the device when it was introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week—Samsung is just one of many appliance makers racing to install (安装) a large number of internet- connected features in machines in an effort to make them“smart. ”
Last year, it was a refrigerator that tweeted. This year, it’s Wi- Fi- enabled laundry machines and fridges that can tell you when your groceries are going bad.
The washers and dryers, available starting in the spring, connect to any smartphone through a downloadable application. The phone can then be used as a remote control, so the machines can be turned on and off while their owner is at work or on the bus.
Samsung says it’s not just something new—the app connection actually has some practical uses.
“If you started to dry clothes in the morning and forgot to take them out, you can go to your phone and restart your dryer for the time when you come home, so your clothes are refreshed and ready to go, ”said spokesperson Amy Schmidt.
The company also says that with electricity rates (电价) varying depending on the time of day, more control over when the machines are used can help save money.
Perhaps, but what they will probably really accomplish is what all good technologies do—enable laziness. Rather than getting up to check on whether the laundry is done, users will instead monitor it on their phones while watching TV.
1. What can be inferred from the common response of the attendees at the CES?
A. The machine will be a big success. B. Their wives like doing the laundry.
C. The machine is unrelated to their life. D. This kind of technology is familiar to them.
2. What can we learn about the new laundry machines?
A. They can tell you when your clothes need washing.
B. They can be controlled with a smartphone.
C. They are difficult to operate.
D. They are sold at a low price.
3. We can conclude from Samsung’s statements that .
A. the app connection makes life easier B. it is better to dry clothes in the morning
C. smartphones can shorten the drying time D. we should refresh clothes back at home
4. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. The laundry should be frequently checked. B. Lazy people like using such machines.
C. Good technologies also cause problems. D. Television may help do the laundry.

BEIJING, China (CNN) -- Chinese workers and army soldiers were racing to sweep snow-covered highways and unclog railway routes for millions of travelers trapped by cold weather. More than 67 million people have been affected by the weather and economic losses are expected to reach as much as $3 billion, Chinese officials say.
The snowstorms have damaged power lines, houses and farmland, causing fears of food and energy shortages. Twenty-four people have died and some 827,000 people have been evacuated in 14 different provinces, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said Monday.
In the past week, the snowstorms have hit the provinces in central, eastern and southern China.
"We've never seen such a cold weather lasting for such long a time," said Tang Shan, a man in his 70s in Changsha, the capital of Hunan province. "The last time we had one here was over 50 years ago, and not this bad."
The snow and sleet have paralyzed(使瘫痪)roads, railways and airports, leaving tens of millions of travelers marooned, officials say. Many of them are bound for home ahead of the traditional Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, which falls on February 7.
The Lunar New Year travel is China's busiest travel period of the year. But the cold weather is delaying travel plans. In the southern city of Guangzhou, as many as 500,000 train passengers had to stay in the station. About 100,000 packed the square in front of the train station while others found shelter in schools and other public buildings while waiting for their trains.
Chinese premier Wen Jiabao has ordered urgent measures to unclog the transport jam and ensure a steady supply of food and energy.
“Let’s unite as one to fight against the disaster,” he said in an emergency meeting.“Let’s ensure that the people enjoy the Spring Festival.”
But more terrible weather is expected. On Monday China’s Weather Station issued a rare“red alert”warning of more serious snowstorms in the coming days. If so, the number of trapped travelers will surely increase.

The next decade will witness the most important changes in the way we consume sport since the appearance of mass audience television in the 1950's. The development of media channels such as satellite and cable television, the internet and mobile telephones has broken the traditional free television model in every advanced economy. Well managed sports will remain valuable content and many will continue to grow. Forward thinking governing bodies will grasp the opportunity by repackaging their sports to adapt to the new broadcast landscape. Others will not.
Brand marketers have seen the effectiveness of the traditional TV sport advertising fall over the last twenty years as audiences for free to air television fall year by year. The growth of sponsorship(赞助)as a marketing tool is one result. However, sport must compete for the sponsor dollar with other forms of content such as music, the arts and culture and cause-related marketing, each of which offers a powerful choice.
At the same time some of sports biggest marketers, the soft drink, beer and fast food companies, will come under growing pressure from social and political pressure groups concerned about levels of obesity(肥胖), over drinking and anti-social behavior that have become such a part of modern life.
Companies such as McDonalds, Coca Cola and Budweiser face calls to cut its ties with sport, which will be popular over the next decade.
