It had been snowing since two o’clock that afternoon. Time was slipping away, and as I watched the snowflakes fall onto my car, I really began to wonder if I was going to make it on time. Of course I must, as there was no option.
Several weeks ago, all the things that my daughter Alexandra had talked about were the Christmas concert to be held in her school and some rumors about it. “Mom, Rachel was supposed to sing alone, but guess what happened? She’s not! Linda will replace her to do it.” “Mom, I get to stand next to Tyler in the whole concert!” “Mom, you won’t believe it, but Lexie’s whole family is coming to the concert, even from another state!” Making a long way out of state to see third graders sing Christmas carols seemed to be a pretty big deal for her.
As I sat in traffic, I thought about all the school events I had attended alone. Alexandra never mentioned it, but I wondered how she felt about me being the only one whoever came to her events. My own family lived out of town, and her father and his family never quite managed to fit those things into their schedules. I wondered if it bothered her.
The concert was scheduled to begin at seven o’clock. With only a few minutes to spare, I found myself running: first, through the snow-drifted parking lot, then through the school passage. I entered the crowded hall and found a vacant seat near the front. From her place onstage, Alexandra saw me run for the chair, and she smiled. I was close enough to hear the loud conversation of the children onstage.
“Look, Alexandra, there is my aunt and my cousin. They came all the way from West Virginia. I can’t believe my whole family is here!” Alex smiled at Lexie and said, “My whole family is here, too! Look, there she is!” Alex gave me a big smile. I waved back at her, never once noticing the melting snow dripping off my head. It suddenly occurred to me that while we tried to teach our children all about life, they actually taught us what life was all about.

23. It could be inferred from the passage that the writer ________.
A. attached importance to her daughter’s school events

Life is so much simpler these days.Everything revolves around a single button! With the introduction of washing machines, washing clothes became easier. The machines would dry clothes at least 70 to 80 percent and already half-dried clothes would be done in no time. Do you want to know how washing machines evolved?
The first washing machine was called the scrub(擦洗)board and was invented in the year l797.In l851.American man, James King, discovered and patented the first washing machine to use a drum. However, it was still hand-powered and did not work by itself.
Then,in l858, William Blackstone of Indiana built a washing machine for his wife. This washing machine removed and washed away dirt from the clothes. This was the first official washing machine that could be used at home.
In l908, the Hurley Machine Company of Chicago invented the Thor machine. This was the first washing machine that was electrically powered, and it had a galvanized(电镀的)metal tub and an electric motor. The earlier washing machine had a heavy, cast-iron mechanism mounted on the tub lid, making the machine heavy and difficult to move.
The introduction of a metal tub and reduction gears(减速齿轮)in later years replaced this heavy equipment and by l920 the production of wooden tub washing machines completely stopped. But the new machines made a lot of noise because of their bulky metal tubs.A modification that was made was coveting the tubs with white enameled(磁漆的)sheet metal to make the cleaning process easier.
By the early l950s, American companies started producing washing machines with a spin dry feature, and this replaced the old wringer, which, while drying the clothes, would remove the buttons or cause accidents involving the hair and hands. In l957, the first washing machine with five plus buttons was introduced. These controlled the wash temperature, rinse temperature and spin speed.
Slowly, more features were added, and today we have a variety of washing machines with different features and styles to help us out and make life simpler and easier.

A.was invented in the year l797 B.was invented for a woman

A.They were equipped with a cast-iron mechanism on the tub lid.
B.They had a metal tub and reduction gears.
C.They had a galvanized metal tub and an electric motor.
D.They had a hand-powered mechanism.
27.What can we learn from the fifth paragraph?
A.The washing machine with a metal tub and reduction gears was invented in l920s.
B.The washing machines with a metal tub did not make any noise.
C.The cleaning process became simpler thanks to an enameled sheet metal tub.
D.The wooden tub washing machine was cheaper than one with a metal tub.
28.What was an advantage of the spin dry feature?
A.It didn’t have buttons to control it.
B.The wash and rinse temperature could be controlled.
C.It avoided accidents involving the hair and hands.
D.It speeded up the spin speed.

When should people be made to retire? 55? 65? Should there be a compulsory age limit?
Many old people work well into their 70s and 80s, running families, countries or corporations. Other people, however, despite being fit and highly talented, are forced to retire in their fifties or even earlier because of the regulations of a company or the nation. This essay will examine whether people should be allowed to continue working as long as they want or whether they should be encouraged to retire at a particular stage.
Some people think there are several arguments for allowing older people to continue working as long as they are able. First of all, older employees have an immense amount of knowledge and experience which can be lost to a business or organization if they are made to retire. A second point is that older employees are often extremely loyal employees and are more willing to carry out company policies than younger less committed staff. However, a more important point is regarding the attitudes in society to old people. To force someone to resign or retire at 60 indicates that the society does not value the input of these people and that effectively their useful life is over. Age is irrelevant to a working life, surely if older employees are told they cannot work after 60, this is age discrimination. That they become old does not necessarily mean they are going to be sick. Old people could be more aware, experienced and committed than some youngsters.
Others, however, think that allowing older people to work indefinitely is not a good policy. Age alone is no guarantee of ability. Old people are only ambitious workaholics who are too selfish and self-centered to believe that a younger person could do better. Actually, many younger employees have more experience or skills than older staff, who may have been stuck in one area or unit for most of their working lives. Having compulsory retirement allows new ideas in an organization. In addition, without age limits, however, many people would continue to work purely because they did not have any other plans or roles. A third point of view is that older people should be rewarded by society for their life’s labor by being given generous pensions and the freedom to enjoy their leisure. We now have youngsters who can’t find jobs because old people are choosing not to retire. Old people are not retiring because this new generation of “old people” ,thinking they will never die due to modern advances in medicine.
With many young people unemployed or frustrated in low-level positions, there are often calls to compulsorily retire older workers. However, this can affect the older individual’s freedom and right to work and can deprive(剥夺) society of valuable experience and insights. I feel that giving workers more flexibility and choice over their retirement age will benefit society and the individual.
29.What is the purpose of this passage?
A. To explain the compulsory age limit. B. To discuss the retirement age.
C. To examine people’s working life. D. To introduce a particular stage.
30.Which of the following is NOT a reason for allowing old people to continue working according to the passage?
A. Their contribution should be valued.
B. Their experience should be made use of.
C. They can help the youngsters.
D. They are loyal employees.
31.It can be inferred in the fourth passage that ______.
A. The young people have more creative spirits
B. Modern advances in medicine make old people never die
C. Pensions and freedom are not given to the old now
D. Old people believe that a younger person could do better
32.The passage is arranged as follows:
